Thank you! The trick is making a good base plate. Gives you alot.of.control! Easy to make as well, have a video on how to make one on my channel. The other important ingredients are sharp router bits and a little patience. Thanks for watching!

I appreciate that you show how slowly you carve. Others speed up the videos so often that a beginner can't tell how to pace themselves and get the lines you do. Thanks.
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 6 лет назад
I generally only speed them up so I can add the whole process in one video. The average sign takes me about an hour, sometimes two and I only have a 20 minute slot. If.there is anything you would like me to show in more detail then just send me a message and I will do my best to show it

Here's a man who does wood carving the right way WITHOUT a CNC machine. A CNC machine turns you from a wood worker to a wood watcher. You can train a monkey to push a button. This piece took talent and skill.

@deeeyewhy5949
@deeeyewhy5949 Год назад
This is definitely skill and talent but the creation of cnc technology also required immense skill and talent and is evidence of humanity’s ingenuity. Cnc machines make tedious work simple. It takes a skilled craftsman to pave the way for such advancements that allow us to spend more time with loved ones and doing the things we would love. Some people may love working with wood but at the end of the day wearing a respirator sucks and fine wood dust is highly carcinogenic.
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker Год назад
@@deeeyewhy5949 thank you, you make some valid points. Using a router to do inlay work has been around since the 1950s when it developed for, among others, the wall paper industry to make patterns to print. CNC is a very clever technology but can also be quite limited. Its not really a press and go type operation. The setup is expensive, they have some basic kits but any kind of.professional set up will cost thousands. Plus it also requires monitoring while its in action, dust extraction, manipulation etc. And its a slow process, complicated patterns can take many hours as the router does one thin layer at a time. Doing it by hand is quick as the person can adapt to changes and is relatively easy to learn without any very expensive start up costs for laptops and machinery. CNC is certainly the future for mass production but still think there's a place for it in the modern day. Thanks for your comment, its always interesting to hear different perspectives

@@JohnathonWhittaker I was hoping you might have an answer for my other question. I was looking to make a concrete memorial with raised lettering. Wondering if I can route the lettering in wood in the opposite configuration (depressed lettering) coat the wood form with oil and get a good enough cast from it. I read hydraulic cement is better for this type of decorative concrete work im speaking of? If you’re not sure that’s no problem. I have read somewhere rhat people make casts to get the effect I want out of pink hard insulating foam sheets but they use Cnc programing and idk how well a router bit would work with such a soft substrate.
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker Год назад
@@deeeyewhy5949 yes you can certainly do something similiar to that, while I haven't cast text with concrete, i have cast very detailed carvings with it. I have found the best way to pick up fine detail like that is to do your carving and then make a silicone mold of it. Not tricky to do at all. What I do is take my carving, add around 4 layers of silicone to it, build either a plaster or fiberglass shell around it and then your ready to cast. When it comes to casting, apply a Good concrete release agent to the mold, mix up your concrete and also a very small slurry mix of just cement and water. Paint the slurry on this inside of the mold and then pour your concrete while the slurry is still wet. You will get a perfect reproduction of your carving. Do you follow my Instagram channel? Have a few examples of this on there

Great sign ,I've moved up from a dremel to the router and I love it ,I use cnc bits with a collet adapter to fit my router..I've some bigger pieces of my work on youtube..the only thing I couldn't see the point of was burning, then sanding,painting,then sanding did the burn effect disappears or maybe it was hard to see from the video..still a great sign just my opinion. .cheers

The burn effect has multiple purposes, the main one is that his removes all the little rough bits and seals the wood. The colouring effect is more of a secondary issue. As this is pine, and the wood colour is very faint, I like to add just a little burn to enhance the natural wood

Johnathon, thank you so much for responding to my “cellulose thinner” question. Regarding the CNC bits you use in this video, have you tried a Whiteside SC-50 for the fine line work you demonstrate here? If yes, which is your preference?
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 5 лет назад
Hi Robert, yes I started out using those ones, after watching loads of videos from eric and dave routen at "olddave 100" great videos if you haven't seen them. my issue with those bits is that here in England, they are quite expensive and tricky to sharpen. the 1/8th shank bits I use are cheap, easy to sharpen and work really well for me, plus they have the same life span as a SC-5o. they fit in any 1/4 inch collet with a 1/4 to 1/8th reducer.

Hi Johnathon, what varnish would you recommend ? great tutorisl BTW !!
@JohnathonWhittaker
@JohnathonWhittaker 6 лет назад
Hi there, I tend to.use water based varnishes and clear coats. The oil based can make the white go yellow quite quickly. Depending on your country, you can use Osmo, minwax is very good but not readily available in the UK. Sikkens is excellent but expensive! Whatever the varnish, just maje sure it's an exterior one with good UV blocking properties
