I never use the provisional cast on, I knit the ribbing, fold it over & knit through the rough edge!

@@GracefullyUnraveled I've done that before too. It can be little tighter than the provisional cast on sometimes and since I was making these for my MIL and her friends I wanted to do it "right". Once I got the hang of it it wasn't bad!
