I finally made a handle for the mortise axe I forged a while ago. Make sure to check out the next video where I'll put this axe to the test! And don't forget the video where I forged the axehead!
The handle is make from ash and surprisingly turned out to have soms nice curly grain on one side. The handle has a slight curve upward so your knuckles clear the log while working in a deep mortise. This kind of axe can be used for al sorts of job where the bit of extra reach is required.
Thank you for watching,
Marcel

The grain on the handle is going the wrong way, at least in my opinion…..axes here the the US have the handle grain parallel to the axe head. It is less likely to break from a miss hit

It is though?

On a riven handle it doesn't matter.

Yeah, I used to be of the same opinion and I adressed this in one of my other videos. Talking with other experienced woodworkers and looking at historical examples shows that it is not super critical. But maybe for felling axes with high impact I would also still go with the grain alignment you're talking about.
