In this video I try out my mortise axe for the first time by chopping out a mortise in a small log. Figuring out how to handle and controle the tool will take some more practise, but I can't wait to use it in a future project.
Make sure to check out my previous videos on how I forged the axehead and made the handle.
Thank you for watching,
Marcel

Perhaps the flat head of chisel suggests that the chisel should be placed and then struck on the flat head, rather than an axe type stroke. Your sharpening techniques are amazing.

Yes, probably you would be more succesfull when driving the axe with mallet/big ol' stick. And thank you!!

Slipping wedges and loosening axe heads/handled tools were the bane of my existence for years. No matter how many notches I put in the wood or steel (or both in combination), no matter how much epoxy I applied, they always loosened. All that stopped when I started making my wedges out of sharpened pipe. I use them for everything, even friction fitted tools.

I'll keep that in mind!

I never thought to use pipe instead of buying those circular wedges , thanks for the tip

It would take a perfectly aimed strike of the axe but I always imagined a mortise axe chopping perpendicular to the length of the mortise. Especially in a situation like you had there with holes drilled in the ends of mortise. The chips would just fly if severed perpendicular. Then come back and clean up the walls using the mortise axe more like a chisel and pushing instead of striking.

Yes, the twybil has this capability with its mortise chisel-like end. I really need to make that variety! makes more sense.

I sort of think the axe is supposed to be used perpendicular to the grain of the wood. This also makes the narrow width of the cutting edge make sense as well. The way you cut in the beginning of the video could really be done with any axe which gave me the idea that the reason it's narrow is to allow it to cut the other way. I could be totally wrong but I think it'd cut much much quicker too.
@MarcelTeugels

Working square to the grain using a swinging motion will become impossible on a narrow mortise like this, then jou would need to use a hammer of sorts. Which was done. I think this axe need a bigger mortise to shine. The twybil variant of the axe has two cutting edges and has a pickaxe shape, one end (missing here) is a mortise chisel like end that you can use to chop the endgrain, square to the grain. But indeed my axe has some trouble in this video.

Your new shop is so big that you sound like you were in a church ! It must take ages to be able to make a clean mortice using this technic! Good job Marcel. This tool looks great

axes were mostly used for fresh and wet wood, then the effort with practice is not so great, less vibration in the hands

You're right, this wood was cut almost a year ago, It's not super dry but not comparable with freshly felled wood.

Hi Marcel,I'm wondering if it would be easier to cut the mortise with an axe that resembles a traditional mortise chisel,with a smaller head to allow easier access in the mortice,just thinking really.👍Maybe two axes could work together,one for chipping out and one for cleaning the sides..
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels 2 года назад
Hi, that is basicly what the twybil does, the "big brother" or cousin of this axe that I mentioned at the end of the video. This axe has two sides, one side like I have here and one side like a mortise chisel like you described. I was thinking the same thing, to make one like the mortise chisel to use together with this one. But I also just want to make or find a nice twybil! Thanks for the comment!

If the tool you describe at the end is rare there is probably a good reason for that...either it doesn't work well or it is optimized for specific and limited circumstances. The tool you really want for this application would be a narrow adze. The curvature of the adze blade is far more efficient at removing large chips of wood than a straight blade would be. Also, you made your mortise ax with a DOUBLE BEVEL. No wonder it gets stuck in long grain. Framing chisels do not use a double bevel, they use only a single bevel. As the edge is driven into the wood, the wedge shape of the blade drives the chisel backward, relieving it from getting stuck.
@MarcelTeugels
@MarcelTeugels Год назад
The double ended mortise axe (Twybil) or "cross axe" is rare because it's a specialised tool that few people needed. It only shines when working on really big timbers for churches, mills, bridges etc. Many or even most mortise axes are double bevelled. On the twybil, the other end had a single bevelled mortising chisel-like end that is straight, and not curved like and adze.

Sorry ,but would it not be better to drill more hole's and then work with your axe It would go a lot faster. I think there are better technics without use electronic devices.

Yes, for sure, that's kind of what I said at the ebdvof the video. This was just a test. Next time I would definitely drill more holes.

Yes !! Having worked at a historical museum our understanding of a mortising axe was not for fine work but for rough farm work on things like fence posts. Used to clean up mortises drilled with multiple holes for rail fences.
