In this video we show you how we made a start on the last big piece of campervan furniture - our kitchen. We designed and build the kitchen cabinets ourselves out of 18mm poplar ply which is light weight but sturdy. We needed to incorporate a fridge, hob and sink as well as gas pipework, electrical wiring and hot air ducting under the units. We then finished them using Valspar V700 Wood and Metal paint in Eggshell before making a start on cutting our worktop. This was much more stressful than it needed to be because I missed the part in the instructions that said to cut in depths of 4mm to ensure a clean cut but I managed to rescue it and we got the worktop cut to size. We chose a solid laminate worktop from Wickes called Zenith Cloudy Cement. It was a bit more pricey than we'd have liked but it's heat and damp resistant and looks modern and clean with its face concrete finish.
In two we'll start assembling the drawers and cupboards, cut more holes in the worktop and then fit it all together!

I'm really enjoying this series guys. I'm just planning my kitchen area even though I only got the van a few weeks ago!, I guess you have to think ahead! Also love seeing your cat make an occasional appearance.

Looks great 👍 love how much detail you give. Where did you get the tile sheets from, look a clever idea

Thanks! The tile sheets are made by multipanel and stocked all over the place. We got ours from Wolsey plumb centre.

More excellent work again Fella. How are you finding the Makita track saw when cutting plywood? Accurate clean cuts? Any ‘tear out’ issues with the plywood? 👍
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 2 года назад
Thank you. Yeah it’s really good, good clean cuts and only minor issues that can be fixed with sanding. Best tool I’ve used!

With my Makita tracksaw, I upgraded the blade to a much finer one and its perfect for plywood; no tear out at all!

Long the build so far. I know your keen on saving weight. On your bench seating you could do cut outs to help with reducing the weight. Similar to long slots. Like van furniture seating. Dove that with mine.
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 2 года назад
Yeah I’m worried about weight so I did think about replacing the seat bases with lighter weight ply or doing as you suggest.

Hey, when joining the middle two upright panels with the pocket holes on either side, did you have to drill the holes in different positions on each batten so that the screws didn't hit each other, or do you not have to worry about them hitting each other? Cheers
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I did them slightly out of alignment so the screws wouldn’t hit each other

Where do you guys get your poplar ply from having a hard time finding a good supplier. Good build 👏

Thanks Lee. We got it from Sydenhams but they only do it in a few of their branches.

@@OurVanPlan thanks for the fast reply. I have a L3 H2 Boxer , doing my plan now. Can't believe how hard it is haha. I'm a marine upholsterer so seating won't be a problem at least

Hi guys. Would you mind telling me the exact name for the ply you used. Did you manage to find out how much lighter it is than birch ply? Also what paint did you finish it with? Yours looks awesome when finished. Did you prime first? And what sort of filler did you use? Sorry for so many questions. Hope you can help. Cheers Matt
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan Год назад
Hi Matt, it was Poplar Ply and got it from Sydenhams in Bristol. I didn’t measure but it is a lot lighter but it does dent more easily. Regarding paid, I did prime with zinsser 123 and then used Valspar eggshell (the top range one) for the finish. It went on amazingly well.

Thanks for the quick and useful response. One more question if you don’t mind. What glue did you use? Thanks again.

Hey guys hope your well I need some advice how did you get the spacing correct with the drawers and what size of ply was it again 😊
@peterjohnson9242
@peterjohnson9242 8 месяцев назад
Also what was your height and width of the panels
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 8 месяцев назад
The ply is 12mm and about 58cm deep and 85cm high. But I just measured the height of my kitchen worktop. The spacing I just worked out the total width and then accounted for the internal ply to plan out the drawer widths. Then just ordered those from drawerboxes.co.uk However it was made easier by having the fixed width fridge on the left and a cupboard on the right that could be flexible in width.

Is the Poplar Plywood much lighter than standard Plywood and is it worth the extra money?
@OurVanPlan
@OurVanPlan 5 месяцев назад
Yeah it is quite a bit lighter and also smoother/better finish

You mean in between each upright? It’s 18mm ply cut into the relevant width and depth (50mm as you say)

Why the hell are you working with 18mm ply? Are you intending to put V8 car engines on those benches? You only need 12mm at most. You can even get away with 6mm if you epoxy saturate them. Making a van light is better for power and fuel economy. You just need to build the cabinets to just the right amount of strength and thickness to hold cabinetry. Sorry , Unsubbed.
