Hands in the Baseball Swing
A growing movement online...hands and arms are meaningless in the baseball/softball swing. Hands are fundamental to helping players unload the swing with correct sequence. We can talk about hands and not promote slapping the ball on the ground to 2nd base. Youth players need to be taught that fundamentally the hands play a role in are ability to make adjustments and ultimately time our sequence so we can hit the ball with authority.

It’s crazy you had to make a video to break this down, the number of instructors online that tell their kids to de-emphasize their hands and arms is mind boggling. Best hitting breakdown I’ve seen to date

Its crazy to me. I think the hands are so under talked about in the baseball community. What other sport would any coach teach there kids to just fire the hips have a strong weight transfer and just let your hand go along for the ride. You would never see that kind of teaching in a slap shot, tennis forehand, or even a golf swing. Hell ill go as far as saying if i was going to chop down a tree with and axe, or splash a bucket of water on someone. Im not just shooting my hips and spinning around in a circle. Just does not make sense to me. One of the worst slumps i went through in my collegiate career was when i started following that model. Finally a coach talked me into firing my hand at the ball and my power was restored. PLEASE PEOPLE DO NOT IGNORE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ROLE YOUR HANDS PLAY IN A GOOD BASEBALL SWING

My pleasure! And thank You. If I may - and I’m not a teacher and I don’t mean to be obnoxious - but - I think most teachers won’t discuss hands because even They are not truly aware of what they really do. You mention the player who says he doesn’t even feel his hands when he swings. That’s because they are doing the correct thing. Consequently the hands and the bat become One Solid Entity. “Solid” not meaning immobile or unmovable - rather meaning all three things (two hands and the bat) are moving in complete unison. Hence there’s nothing to feel. The only reason TO feel your hands would be if you are “literally” doing nothing with them so they are left to flail around all by themselves looking for a way to hook up with the body - or worse - now feeling “disconnected” from your body and left to their own devices - they will automatically do the only thing they know for certain you want them to do - which is FIND THE BALL! And the hands frantically trying to find the ball all by themselves with no guidance from the body is definitely something one would FEEL. But it’s too late for them. They’ve already missed the boat (body) so they have to try to do it by themselves - which unfortunately means they MUST now re-route the BODY in order to facilitate finding the ball. (And then you have people telling you your head’s in the wrong place - or your arms are wrong - or your Elbow. NO. everything is in the PERFECT position... to allow your abandoned hands to make contact!) In my experience most teachers address the “result” when they need to address the “cause” Anyway. Yikes. Sorry to go on. Obviously a topic I’m passionate about. Thanks again and may you always STICK TO YOUR GUNS!

Ron Sullivan you are saving kids (and grown ups if they wouild listen) soooooooooo much time and more importantly HEARTACHE. I have been having arguments about "What do the hands do?" for 25 years and hearing the same thing for 25 years from "Expert" - "Master" - "Top 100" - "Top 10" - "Top 5" Teachers: First - there's the immediate look of exhasperation - followed by "Dude PLEEEAASE don't worry about the hands. The hands don't do ANYTHING!". It is my belief that few things could be as wrong as that statement. YES the hands do Nothing - as long as either - you have been using them instictively correctly since you were a baby OR you have since learned to use them correctly. If the hands do not work properly I don't care if you are getting swing advice from God - your BODY will never be able to apply that advice if the hands are working incorrectly. EVERY SINGLE part of our bodies accepts what came immediately before - and facilitates what comes immediately after. Leave out any part and your body wioll slap you upside the head so hard your head spin. Always remember one thing - Our BODIES are so superior and so much smarter than our Minds will ever be. Anyway - Thanks ron. You rock. PS - When a student asks "what do my hands do" - its not because they want to "slap" the ball. They are asking "what do my hands have to do in order to facilitate all of the power of mty body". kbyefornow

Taking about Bryce Harper vs a little kid who has an amazing swing... But overall, it's physical strength. Harper's forearms are twice the size. You can't teach that, it's gotta come through strength training and weight lifting. Maybe high school that little kid will bulk out a bit, but right now, he's got a great swing

He does have a great swing. Thanks for the comment!
@shannonmccord9933

Has nothing to do with bulking up. This kid, like many others, use the rotation of their body to do most of the swinging of the bat which is detrimental to bat speed.

Hey coach I was wondering how Bryce Harper or any MLB player gets the hands in front of the shoulder is it the pulling of the bottom hand?
@RonSullivanHitting
@RonSullivanHitting 7 лет назад
I think each player has a bit of a different feeling...I read that Mike Trout loves to pull with his bottom hand and Harper says hes very top hand dominant.
