Pry the darkness from my eyes.
Divided, let the light seep in.
Trees devoid of branches, and hollow hives,
Endless black and empty beds.
It's not the same, something's changed.
I never used to be able to see past the trees.
A thousand unfamiliars are lying thick on the air and I can't breathe.
Is our skin to keep the world out or our bodies in?
This doesn't look like home.
Is our skin to keep the world out or our bodies in?
I'll tear apart the town then sleep, and sleep alone.
If I'm a flame, I'm a forest fire speaking savage tongues as I emerge from the hills.
I am an avalanche. I am unchained. I'm awoken. I'll unleash hell.
So I roar, pin back my ears, and stone by stone I'll tear it all apart.
I've lost faith, the forest's changed.
My stomach's empty I'm feeling faint.
I've lost heart, the forest's scarred.
I hear no birds, just tv's and cars.
I've lost sight, the forest's died.
The brambles are bare, and I'm hollow inside.
Each breath rattles like dice in my chest,
Each breath gambled, unwinding til death.

I seriously loved this video. The song, to me at least, is about feeling disconnected and completely disheartened with the way your life is going. About not seeing home in the place you're supposed to call home and an overwhelming despair that it won't get better. And honestly, who's to say someone outside of the norm depicted in videos (young persons) wouldn't feel that? I'm not a middle-aged mother but I can easily believe that doing the whole 9-5 to feed your kids and doing chores and paying bills and no longer LIVING would take it's toll. To the point where you want to scream and let the world collapse around you, if only for a moment. So I think this video did a beautiful job of expressing that frustration and sense of helplessness :)

Getting to that point requires you to make choices. If you aren't strong enough to stand by the choices you make than you really dont have a right to stand and shout about it. "I had a kid and responsibilities, WAHHHHAHA to a rock beat" Awaiting the flame wall.
@neonfiona

underclocked I don't know, I think it's just part of the human condition to feel trapped sometimes. That's why this song is so great, because so many of us can connect to that feeling. And I don't think that somebody's emotions in regards to helplessness and being overwhelmed by it all should be dismissed for any reason, be it their age, race, gender, sexual orientation or choices.

A lot of the comments seem to be getting mad because there's a middle-aged woman in it like wow can we not forget that a lot of us like this kind of music because it makes us feel wonderful and amazing and connected and understood and not exclude people from that? Thank you.

A lot of kids are bitching about the video, then again they are kids. This video is actually meant to appeal to an older crowd. It's about basically looking back on your life and wanting so much more. 14 year old kids wouldn't understand it because they still have life ahead of them and so much more to see and dream about. She's looking back on her life and realizing there was so much more she could've done, but instead she became a stay-at-home mom. Sure she doesn't regret having her kids, or possibly marrying her husband, but she wishes she had accomplished more. Who knows, this may be in the future and she could have been a fan of HLH when she was younger and in our present, holding on to a band and a song that made her feel young and alive, and remembering what it was like to be young and be able to dream for so much more.

Nothing against you, you're right, but some kids have seen some things that they shouldn't have to at such a young age, so therefore they feel broken and hopeless already. I have. I had a rough childhood, it isn't much better now, and I continue to fight through it everyday. This comment wasn't made to make anyone pity me. All I'm saying is pain comes in many ages. And many children look to this song to make the best out of their situation. By the way; I'm fourteen.

Honestly I expected the video to follow the bear displaced by a new neighborhood metaphor so this video just didn't hit the same way the song does as I listen to it. The song is definitely about anxiety and while I know songs aren't literal, it definitely paints the picture of an animal in the forest and was later on confirmed in a break down that it is indeed a metaphor used to describe anxiety through the eyes of a bear displaced by a new neighborhood built at the edge of his forest. I'm just kinda disappointed in the video more than anything. Though I am not the children you directed your viable synopsis at, I just figured I'd throw my 2 cents in.

+Krista Frazier In my perspective of that scene, it seems like the kids are needing their mom but she is choosing not to pay attention to them. I actually expected the kids to be the dancers behind the glass door but they didn't show themselves afterwards. But then again the dancers could be what the mom imagines herself looking like when she is dancing xD

I used to be obsessed with this song but it got lost with my entire playlist once i changed my phone about five years ago. I’ve been looking for this song for over a month now and the only lyrics I remembered of it were “this doesnt look like home” and despite my hard tries to remember I couldn’t.. My sister was searching for something a minute ago and went “it’s not the same, something changed” and I immediately remembered the entire lyrics of this song and now I’m very happy to have found it again🤍🤍🤍

Its the type of song that puts your entire life's situational struggles and unkempt feelings in the forefront without even conciously thinking of them. Some songs are obviously relateable, but songs like this make you ponder on your life and put your issues into perspective through a powerful expression of words melodies and purely music. I love Hands Like Houses.

I think the Video may be a reference to one one of the illustrators from the book that gave it it's name, 'Tales of outer suburbia'. There's one image of two men sitting on what looks sort of like a ledge, captioned, 'How great it must have been long ago, when the world was still unknown'. I assume the boys are like this woman, i think she's sick of being trapped in the same routine, life has lost its edge, and she longs to be young and free again. But that's just my interpretation of it. :)

I do not see why people are so uptight about this video being portrayed by an overweight, middle-aged woman. Would you all really prefer an eighteen-year-old model without a care in the world? Your average woman is like this; for lack of a better word -- flawed -- stressed, and in need of an outlet. A young, care-free woman does not represent the point being made.

Holy shit, this video is pure gold. It's so meaningful and the creativity surpasses anything I've seen from this genre. It's a song so many people can relate to, which is why they used a middle aged woman and honestly she fits the video perfect. I'm actually blown away, especially when the kids come in, symbolizing how much she wants to break free and let go of everything, but can't because of her children. If the video looks funny or stupid to you, watch it again in 10 years and see how much you can relate. She's just doing what most of us keep inside. "This is a song about anxiety, built on the metaphor of a bear displaced by a town being built on the edge of his forest. It's the one song on the album that doesn't “resolve,” which for me is a representation of anxiety itself. It's an overwhelming feeling of helplessness that channels through nervousness, desperation, anger and numbness all at once, and usually very suddenly. I don't want to glorify a negative influence, and it's my hope that by writing this, I and others can actually better handle it through understanding." The video captures the song perfectly. She's finding a release from her anxiety.

IN MY OPINION: This song and music video are all about growing up, moving away and reminiscing about the past. I believe it's about the band and how much they have grown and how they are away from their homes and how much they have changed from the people they were before to the people they are now. I believe what the video is trying to convey is that we were all something, we all had our dreams, we all tried to be what we wanted to believe, but sometimes it doesn't turn out the way we want it to. It's a great song with a message so deep, it hurts my feels.

If youve been a fan of Hands Like Houses for a while, you'd definitely get why they put out this video. It's here to captivate! Open your minds.

Weird, it made me feel sad... Although the video looked entertaining, if I ignore the symbolism.

The Light of Dawn Just thought it strange and I did admit that I did see how it can be seen as entertaining. (*shrugs*) So if I was supposedly accusing her for "feeling happy while seeing this" I could be just as wrong, if not more so, for possibly seeing multiple aspects of the video and audio. Honestly, I don't view it as condescending... But the limitations of text based communications force us to make assumptions as per our individual experiences... I'm sorry you interpreted my sentence as such, but I have no control over what or how you see.

I love it, You can take the meaning of the video in many different ways. Its all about how you connect with the song that determines why you think they went the direction they did with the video. Props

Wow man. They really had me with most of their last album. This Ain't No Place For Animals was a real comfort to me when I first heard it. They didn't disappoint me with this one. It's kinda like they followed right along with me to where I'm at since the last one they put out. This is the best song I've heard in a long time. Very impressed.

This song is really moving. There's something that brings even more passion with her moshing and singing along. Nobody can make fun of her, because she is probably acting out what we want to but don't want to get seen doing. I think she's wonderful

No matter what you hateful people say I see the message they were trying to convey. This video is, I believe about a woman and family living in suburbia who are frustrated with the constraints and impact of modern life, and begin to go into a somewhat destructive representation of what the song speaks of, and the album for that matter, though she isn't destroying the house, the message as subtle as it is should still be clearly visible.I hope to here more from you HLH, I LOVE your music and cannot wait to buy your next album, you have brought much joy into my life and have filled the gap in some of the bands I like but don't do anything anymore or have disbanded like MCR. As I said love you work, and hope to see more.

This was such a good music video, if only because of how memorable it was. I have a very diverse taste in music (and a head injury) I tend to forget artists names or songs after a couple months, but even almost a decade later, I still randomly come back with a "what was that song with the lady and the washing machine? that was a good one."
