Hands-on Review of the G-Shock Square U-Series Module 3495 for the GW-S5600, GW-5000U, GW-M5610

In mid-2021 Casio released new versions of their popular Multiband 6 and Tough Solar G-Shock Squares. The previous models were the GW-5000, GW-M5610 and GW-S5600 which used the module 3159. The new versions are the GW-5000U, GW-M5610U and the GW-S5600U which use the module 3495. The new modules have a few extra and/or different functions and features, including LEDs for backlights rather than the Electroluminescent backlights of the previous versions. The new watches look almost identical to the older versions on the outside.
In this video I give an In-Depth, Hands-On review of the GW-S5600U which uses module 3495 and which features a Carbon Fiber strap and a titanium case back. I show it, side-by-side, with the previous version so you can see which one you like best. This particular model is apparently only available on the Japanese Domestic Market, but you can find it for sale through sellers on eBay and Amazon who can send it from Japan. The other models are (or will soon be) available on the European market as well as the Japanese market.
If you want even more information about the module 3495 there is a user manual available as a free download from the Casio website and/or as web pages you can navigate without downloading.
The main features of the watches in this video include:
1. Tough Solar. The face of the watch contains a solar cell which will automatically charge the watch's power source with normal exposure to everyday lighting conditions.
2. Multiband 6. The watch has a built-in receiver to keep itself synchronized with "atomic time" from any of six transmitters in different parts of the world.
3. Five "World Time" time zones (selected by the user out of dozens of options) with the ability to quickly swap a "World Time" zone with the local time on the watch.
4. Five daily alarms, including one which is a "snooze" alarm, along with an optional hourly chime.
5. A 24-hour stopwatch with split time.
6. A 24-hour countdown timer which can be set to any number of hours, minutes and seconds from 1 second to 24 hours.
7. 12-hour or 24-hour time display.
8. An LED backlight which can be set to a 1.5-second or 3-second duration, along with an optional automatic setting.
9. The ability to display the date in a M.DD or DD.M format.
10. 20 Bar water resistance.
... and MORE!

I have been waiting for a plain Jane solar-powered square that showed the time while running the stop watch for so long. Thanks very much for the update! I have and like the adrenaline version (red screen), but I always wished my 5610 could run a stop watch while showing me the local time. I am pumped to get my hands on one. Keep up the great work! There are a lot of comments from folks who share your opinions and concerns. I suppose I generally don’t use the light very often anyway. I suppose the “hot spot” is one of those things which is subtle but if it bothers you it just seems to get worse and worse (even if it’s actually still the same). It’s not a dealbreaker for me... not even close to being a dealbreaker. But I understand if it is for other folks.

I have the older GW-S5600-1JF, which I wear more than any of my other 100+ watches. It is my bicycling watch, due to its light weight, carbon-fiber strap and good visibility with polarized sunglasses. I am not seeing a need for me to get this newer model, unless something happened to my current watch. My other G-Shock Squares are: GLS-5600CL-1 (Low Temp LCD), GW-B5600BC-1ER (Bluetooth, combi bracelet), GWX-5600-1JF (Tide, Moonphase) and GMWB5000D-1

@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper 3 года назад
I looked at the Shockbase.org database and there were no watches there with both Multiband 6 and vibration alarms. There were some with both Bluetooth and vibration alarms. My theory is that it’s too difficult to make Multiband 6 work in the same watch that has vibration hardware. There must be a little motor in there and, as far as I have observed, close proximity to motors makes Multiband 6 reception difficult.

I'm going to save this video for reference so I don't have to go through the manual.... thanks for that, such a help. Have you had a chance to check out the PRT-B70 yet? I just picked one up from Amazon for about $160 US and other than it not having solar it's probably the most full-featured Casio watch ever. I can't wait till Tuesday to try it out. I know it's a fishing watch with features most people wouldn't use but you can use Bluetooth with the Protrek app to add and remove features from the watch if you want. Damn, I wish it came with solar but at that price, I couldn't resist. Plus the three color options are nice. I got mine on amazon Canada in blue. Also its not a proprietary strap so that's awesome too. I can put it on a canvas strap as I do with most of my casios. Usually, you have to buy a Protrek or Gshock in the $600-$1000 range to get ABC AND tide and moon phase on a watch. Never mind the cool GPS cookie crumb tracking feature. This watch is going to be great for kicking and fishing. I can't wait to try it out.

I wonder how much better the STN display is and why Casio still uses this type of display on a very limited number of models. Today is not the 1990s. To my surprise, I have not found a single RU-vid video dedicated specifically to this issue. I see on my GW-M5610U that the viewing angles are limited. I wonder how the STN LCD display behaves in this regard.
@gabd.5299
@gabd.5299 3 года назад
Why? Because THE TRADITION :D Jokes aside, the viewing angles are fine in these watches. You are only suppose to glance at it to check the time, you are not engaging with it like you would with a smartphone screen. And the smarter watches of casio has a much more modern display. Like check the GBD or GBX series with the MIP LCD for example.

@GoodTimekeeper 3 года назад
From what I’ve seen, Casio does a lot more non-STN products compared to the ones with STN displays. The full metal Bluetooth Squares have STN if I’m not mistaken. I tend to stay with the lower-priced watches. But I believe my Gravity Master has an STN window at the top of the face. It does look nice and crisp.
@Oleg__
@Oleg__ 3 года назад
Gab D. _"You are only suppose to glance at it to check the time"_ That's the point, that I noticed that in some situations I cannot check the time by just glancing at the watch. For example, when I lean my elbows on the balcony railing or when my hands are on the table, I need to rotate my hand, otherwise everything will merge on the display at an angle. It seems to me that my Rangeman GW-9400 is significantly less sensitive to viewing angles. Even the cheap DW-5600 seems to me a little better in this regard. But under a direct glance, the display of the GW-M5610U is more contrasting. It's not that I'm complaining though…

Hi Greg, excellent review...as always. As both models are virtually identical, I see no reason to not buy the older one if you find it heavily discounted. Casio have done a good job with the updates though, especially with the light duration, current time visible in timer/stopwatch modes and date format (esp. for UK owners) and I believe they've also added an extra time zone or two. It's a shame that the LED hotspot somehow makes the light look a little 'old-school', I have a slight preference for EL but it's no deal breaker. I do think they've missed a trick though (please correct me if I'm wrong), the alarm setting is unchanged. I have a very specific requirement and have to remember to wear either my 5610 or an old, much loved wave ceptor, that I've set to 10:57am. If I happen to be at work on a Tuesday (my shifts vary), we have a scheduled fire alarm test at 11:00am and it's my job to set it off and my watch reliably prompts me to be prepared, but I can't set either watch to just Tuesdays. I use an old Alcatel mobile phone as my bedside alarm and I can select which days and times I want the alarm to wake me up ie: multiple alarms - varied days, but I can't do that with my 5610. I don't want to have to remember to disable and re-enable the alarm every week and it really irritates my wife when the alarms go off every morning when I'm not wearing them......at least I've only set two of my watches to do that! As for the Carbon Fiber strap, I'd love to own the GW-S5600 and as it's such a unique model (and a bit pricey), I'd be proud to have the wording emblazoned on the strap - I can't understand why they've removed the model number (surely they could add the 'u') but kept everything else!

Why don't watch manufacturers implement the full Gregorian calendar? The 28 year cycle will be invalid once we approach 2100. A few very expensive mechanical designs have done it already. It seems to me that it would be a trivial amount of code to add it to quartz modules. The Geneva phone app from Emerald Sequoia implements it. The only "complication" would be that the WWVB time code has only a 2 digit year.

3:12 - It's strange, but on my GW-M5610U not all segments are displayed in this mode. For example, the upper segments are not displayed for minutes. I'm not particularly worried, because in some other video review of the same model, I also saw that not all segments are displayed. But this is weird. In addition, the top row is not displayed inside the month and date frame (that is, it displays a matrix of four rows, not five). The DST, LT, "Mute" and RCVD icons are also not displayed. During normal operation, of course, all these segments and icons are displayed.

Cool! It worked, thanks. Apparently, these are some different modes of displaying service information. At the same time, continuing to press the "D" button, I saw the code of my display module (3495). And there were also some ROM and FILE, I don't know what they are. Interesting! I didn't even know that there were such "secret" service menus. By the way, I also learned today that one can press all buttons except the "D" button (bottom right) and a test screen will appear to check solar panels (SLR) - cover the display with your hand and remove it and the watch should display "8888". And pressing "C" (mode) button, "TLT" (= tilt) screen will appear in which one can test the auto EL gravity switch - tilt the watch and it should also display "8888". :)

I have a question regarding the world time and swapping function. With regards to atomic clock signal. I have tried finding this online and I have read through the manual but have yet to get the answer but I'm looking for. My question is if you travel to a different country and you use the swap function by hitting the upper two buttons, will the watch now look for the closest atomic clock signal? I am getting this watch soon and I will be traveling across multiple countries in a short period of time and was curious if this will keep up with the nearest atomic clock signal just by swapping or if I actually have to go in and change the home time to whatever time zone I'm in.
@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper Год назад
When you do the quick swap of world time and local time it’s the same as if you went into the slower setting functions to change the world time and the local time. The watch will search for the nearest Multiband 6 radio broadcast according to the local time setting. Keep in mind that the watch won’t even try to search for a broadcast if it’s set to a time zone which is clearly out of range. For example, if it’s set for Sydney, Australia then Multiband 6 will not function in that setting.

Can you recommend a good screen saver for this watch, I just ordered the S5600 U and its coming in on Sunday. Would love to order the screen Protector. Thanks.

I haven’t used any screen protectors on my G-Shocks. I saw some on Amazon for these squares but I can’t say if they’re good or not. So far my G-Shocks haven’t seemed to need screen protection.

Screen protector is unnecessary/useless for a gshock. It can take its own care.

@@GoodTimekeeper It depends on what kind of work you do, I am sure mineral glass isn't as resistant as Flame Fusion or Sapphire Crystal. I've scratch a few Flame Fusion glass as well as Sapphire Crystal in my time. As a handyman you can easily scratch up Mineral glass or if your in construction or work alike. one tap on the glass with a sharp object and its done. Just prefer the Extra protection, Most one need it because they use it more for Exercising, Bike Riding, Hiking. Are the OEM Glass on these Casio's easy to find, easy to replace and decently priced? Thanks again for your honest response.

We have granite table and countertops in my house. I noticed deep scratches on my crystal and never knew where they came from., turned out whenever I was cooking in the kitchen, the watch would brush against the rough bottom of the granite and it would scratch. Definetly going with a protector next because I wanna focus on where the food is, not my wrists haha.

Dear Mr. Anderson. I enjoy your reviews on Casio G-Shocks because you really look into the details. This time you're missing something I'd like to know though. The problem is, it's about a model you don't have or at least don't show in this video. The GW-5000U. In 2012 I got myself a GW-M5610 to replace my GW-M5600. I loved that watch so much that I got a GW-5000 in 2019. However I don't like to wear it as I actually use these watches and their functions. The bottons on the GW-5000 are a lot worse than on the cheaper models. I wonder if they "fixed" the buttons on the GW-5000U. Do you know something about it?

Absolutely no interest in the U versions. Hopefully their release will decrease the prices of the previous versions.
@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper 2 года назад
Maybe. But it seems, from what I have read, that Casio has immediately stopped making the older versions and is only making the “U” versions now. I don’t know how many non-U watches are still unsold but as soon as that inventory is gone then that’s it. It’s possible they’re selling out already. Some people have reported they ordered the older version of the red-striped watch from Amazon but received the U version instead (at the lower, older price).

I made it to the official weigh-in at the very end. I think Casio says the GW-S5600 weighs 47 grams although my scale shows 45. I don’t have calipers so I will have to rely on Shockbase.org to give sizes like lug-to-lug, thickness, etc..

Since you live in Utah, do you know how I can set a world time selection to be the same time zone as the home time, but different DST settings? I live in northern Utah and we observe DST. My family lives about 10 hours straight south in the same time zone in Arizona, but AZ doesn't observe DST at all. Can I have the DEN(ver) time zone set for me in Utah with DST enabled (on auto) and DEN(ver) also set as my #1 world time zone with DST set to off? It appears that I cannot because when I change one, it changes the other.
@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper 2 года назад
That’s a good puzzle. I’ll have to experiment with it when I get home. The first thing I would try is to make your world time zone something other than Denver. Like Edmonton with DST always off or Los Angeles with DST always on. I will try that and see how it goes.

I tried the Edmonton time zone with DST turned off as my World Time zone. And I kept Denver as my home time zone with DST set to auto. This seems to work the way you wanted it to work. I will see if it’s still right after the Multiband 6 reception tonight. Then I’ll have to wait and see if it’s still working right when we change back to standard time in Utah. But it worked with both a GW-M5610 and a GW-M5610U.
@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper 2 года назад
The older watch kept the World Time on standard time and the new “U” module switched it to DST overnight. I will keep experimenting.

@@GoodTimekeeper That's weird. I have the U module (3495) and I'll try what you said above with using Los Angeles with DST left permanently on. I can force an atomic reception no problem here down in Spanish Fork and see what happens. Thanks again!

When will the new 3495 module watches be available in the USA?
@GoodTimekeeper
@GoodTimekeeper 2 года назад
Lots of folks say that when they order the GW-M5610 (with the red stripe) from Amazon they are actually receiving the GW-M5610U now. No guarantees that will happen but it appears that the older version is no longer being made so when they’re sold out then places like Amazon only have the “U version” to offer.

Better in every way except the backlight. It looks awful. Casio could have executed the LED implementation much better. Since it is much cheaper than EL, they could have used 2 LEDs with diffusers, this way the screen could have been almost evenly lit and would not blind you in the dark. They have done it before in other watches. They cheapened out.

If RCVD is visible it means the watch has successfully received time data recently. If RCVD is blinking it means the watch is trying to receive time data.
