@@kingofall9262 The current Steam Deck owners will (maybe for the most part) be selling it at a loss depending on which model you originally had. Valve is selling the LCD 256 gb model for $399 before tax. I bought the 512 gb model at launch for $650 before tax. I might get $450 for it if I'm lucky, maybe even stretch it to $500 (it's in pretty solid condition BTW) and then I could cover the rest of the cost. I could do that, but for the rest that have the other cheaper price models, they are kind of put in a tough place if they can't cover the leftover cost difference for the $550 512gb OLED model or the $650 1 TB OLED model. For me, I would love to have the OLED model and I was originally going to sell my 512 gb anti-glare screen model Steam Deck but I think I'll just keep mine for now

I will probably wait for a Steam Deck 2 and keep my Steam Deck LCD. I hope the OLED version continues the popularity of the device though. As a Linux gamer it's been really nice to see more games getting supported out of the box and seeing Devs target the Steam Deck is having an awesome knock on effect. Valve have been doing a really great job overall. 12,000+ games are verified and/or playable and that number is only going to increase.

I just hope they also release a limited edition like they have now for the OLED for a Steam Deck 2. I'm a fan of the orange accents, plus it feels like a nod to half-life, though maybe a bit more vibrant of an orange.

I’m glad I don’t have lcd steam deck . So I had the perfect excuse to order my oled. I would have still upgraded if I had lcd though. The oled is just way better man

Valve fulfiled our requests and thats what makes them trustworthy and that is what matters for the community! With the upgrade to the oled platform, valve put 256 at the price of 64 so yes its not Oled but its still the same gaming machine, now without the husle of instantly changing the ssd. The comparison with the switch was on spot. Yes OLED screens look better but Steam deck is all about the portability, taking the games on the go so don't be sorry if you purchased a deck recently, its still great!

I got a Switch shortly before the Switch OLED and the Steam Deck was announced and now I got the Steam Deck months before the Steam Deck OLED. I couldn't be more unlucky if I tried.

Learning the hard way? If you want something expensive, you first look at how long it's been out. After that you see if there is likely to be a newer version on the horrizon. You must then consider if this upgrade is going to be worth the wait. And finally, you must consider if you rather have said item now? Or will you be willing to wait for a new version? I can remember why I personally didn't get the steam deck, but iv only just purchased the steam deck oled to the point it comes tomorrow.. and I'm not worried about a new console, as there is a possibility, I don't think it will be a significant enough upgrade for it to be worth waiting for. And if it is, of course I'm willing to except my loss and either continue with what I have, or simply buy the new version

I'm very happy with this iteration. I have the now "obsolete" 64gb version, but this gives me so much hope for the Steam Deck 2 when it arrives!

It’s not obsolete at all, specially since you can just upgrade up to 2T ssd. I did 1T on mine and it was a first time doing this kind of thing and it was sooo easy. The LCD still have practically the same performance

With the grip that Nintendo and Valve hold on the handheld market, they're setting extreme expectations for their competitors. 2-3 years is a pretty decent chunk of time to begin mass producing these screens at a much cheaper price point; they're obviously popular in the gaming world and meeting that consumer demand only means higher profit margins for companies like Valve.

Ohh man! Placing a face on FanTheDeck! Haha, you guys rock. Thanks for this coverage. I'm kind of made up on wanting to go with the Legion Go. I love my deck but it's feeling like it's due for an upgrade. I care the most about performance, display and controller versatility and not so much about battery life since as a father of two, my longest streaks are 30 minutes long 😅😅😅. Given all the above I think the Go has the better combination of features. I will miss the Deck but I think this will get me through to Steam Deck 2. Thanks for your impressions and info about these devices!

Awesome stream, and I'll be there on Steam placing my order for the Steam Deck OLED on November 16th, even as an LCD Deck owner! It's nice to see a mid generation update, nice discussion BTW. I'm still incredibly happy with my LCD Steam Deck so I'm not looking to upgrade at all, but I do like the improvements they've made. Not going to hall effect is a big minus point sadly, the added durability would have been a big big plus. Although, the improved screws and overall reparability are indeed very very good. Another huge need a general SteamOS. I would love to be able to boot my Linux box into SteamOS just for gaming without having install unnecessary proprietary stuff into my main install.

VRR is what separates the Asus rog ally from the rest... having smooth gameplay at any fps is what matters most to me

I had the Ally but the right trigger was not registering presses most of the time, so I had no choice but to return it. Yes vrr is sweet, but I just can't wait forever. I went with the Legion Go as it's screen is so much easier to see fine details and the track pad helps greatly in Windows. However I also ordered the Oled SD as there is nothing like oled. I'd easily take Oled's better response time and far better screen, then any Led with vrr.

I honestly think the etched glass is a terrible idea on the OLED, but I'm glad they have an option without it. It's the same deal with TV's, there are a few OLED TVs with a matte film on them, glossy screen OLEDs look soooooo much better. While I'm sure this one in etched glass still looks great, especially compared to the total trash LCD screen, but when you put the 512GB OLED next to the 1TB OLED you will see a huge difference in black levels especially. With the screen reaching 1000nits, the brightness should be able to overcome most reflections. If you are going to be playing outside or directly under harsh lights all the time, yeah get it, but for 99% of people the better buy is the glossy 512GB.

@@mechanicalmonk2020 This is true. I put a screen protector on my etched glass model the day it arrived, not to make the screen look better or anything, I just like to protect my devices. I'll even put a screen protector on a $10 device. But yeah, the screen protector makes my Steam Deck look fantastic. OLED would be nicer to have though.

Ok, justified gripes aside (just purchased og, short announcement, etc), the one thing I can say about Valve is they are not screwing up the Steam Deck. This upgrade is great and we all know it. As a year+ user of the og I'm gonna hit the buy button so fast when CPU/GPU refresh comes because I know it's going to be great. This is a good time for gaming and im here for it.

I'm wave 2 I think? I don't know, but I've had this system for a while (the 512GB) since I was able to put my order in, and it's really great. I'll get the limited edition because I've been dying to swap my shell and this lets me have all the upgrades I ever wanted without having to mod anything myself, and I'm really not upset about the new model just like I wasn't upset when the discounts started to appear. I WANT EVERYONE TO HAVE A DECK. I love the Legion and the Asus and the Ayaneo's, but I want the Steam Deck to be as ubiquitous as an Xbox or a Playstation. I love my deck, and it's on pristine condition so I'll try to get about 400$ for it or give it to my nephew/a friend. Ultimately it's the same as a Nintendo Switch vs Nintendo Switch Oled and anyone that buys the system a week before the new comes out will be upset, I'd be more upset if they weren't upgrading and changing the system ultimately. I AM UPSET THAT THE LIMITED EDITION IS LIMITED. I wish the smoky versions would be standard too. I don't like feeling rushed about these things.... That is my real and only complaint.

I can see why people feel slighted, it's not an insignificant boost all around, it adds up, in the screen, in the battery life, and as much as people say not, possibly a very light lift in performance. Linus did note what a 1000MHz boost in the memory clock, and in somewhat recent years faster memory could mean 1-3fps more, which isn't much, but when the game could be running at 24fps that becomes worth a lot more. It's not like a playstation slim release where you're just like meh the only big reason might be appearance or you really value space saving.

The main purpose of the etched glass is anti-reflection. A screen protector would be glossy and reflective

May have commented this before ... About the only reason I'd get a windows PC handheld (like the ROG Ally) is mainly for my GOG games, and maybe the few things that have trouble running through proton/aren't on Steam - Diablo 2 for instance.

Bill, can you swap the ssd from your lcd to your OLED steam deck and let us know if there are any software/driver issues with doing so? I'd hate to have to reinstall and reconfigure another steam deck from scratch.

Go has a lot of issues with linux and linux is a must for me to replace my laptop, so steam deck sealed the deal for me The better UX, efficiency and sleep mode is just gravy on top, and it's all through progress in gamescope and kde, so it's not like you can magically get these features on windows

The back buttons still hinge the wrong way. Plus, not a fan of the orange power button or the black analog sticks, grey looked nicer imo. Other than that, it's great 😂

The Windows command "shutdown /h" is the way to go into hibernate. I believe there is a way to enable that in the GUI as well.

Nobody was expecting a hardware update so quick after a year and half. However i wonder why Valve considered an oled screen as worthy update and not a Z1 extrem chip. They might be waiting for the next nvidia chip including DLSS tech expected in next nintendo switch which should be announced very soon imo like after christmas and before next spring. So maybe a Steam Deck 2 with some RTX with DLSS should be announced around (mid?) 2025

They have constantly reiterated that they want a stable target for the devs, not a moving one, and that they're not interested in a 20% increase in perfs a Z1 offers. Besides, it sucks below 20W, deck wins everything in the 5-15W range.

Steam Deck is still king at 15W and I think they want it to be more like the Switch with good battery life. Going with a Ryzen 7 7840U (which the Z1 just has the AI stuff disabled) would mean redesigning the SD as I'm sure there would be much more heat to deal with. Valve wants there to be a generational uplift like with consoles so that developers can more easily optimize for it.

For reimaging, i use a Clonezilla ISO loaded to a USB drive just to clone onto the new SSD. thats always worked for me.

I'm watching that video on the linux desktop of the steam deck. Yet it would have been better, IF the Linux desktop of Steam OS would come with all languages keyboard layout! I had to do a lot of Terminal acrobatics and even recompile some c-runtime libraries to get a German keyboard layout on my German ISO-Bluetooth keyboard. Is that now different?

1:05:30 He doesn't care about VRR, so I guess he is not that sensitive to tearing. But personally, if I get a more powerful device like the Go, I expect it to run smoothly without random stuttering. No VRR + native portrait on Windows is a headache IMO. 1:21:13 Phawx does think VRR has huge advantages, so I guess people have their own preferences 😂

I wish GPD or AyaNeo would contract a western company to deal with their customer service or open an office in North America. I've kinda had buyer's remorse with the Steam Deck (although this new model seems to address some of my problems with it) and I would've bought a Win or Air, but I've just been too worried that I'll get unlucky, and have to deal with trying to RMA products to China. (It was annoying enough that my Steam Deck was faulty upon delivery and I had to wait for Valve to fix their crappy fan and bumper button... and that was "only" a few weeks)

Everybody is going crazy over the oled . Even when I was on the steam deck lcd I was thinking man these graphics are great . It the games run really good . I got the legion go and was blown away. I'm playing at 1200p. Mix medium high and some low settings with driver 780m and hyper rx on. Game looks amazing and runs smooooth . You will get over the oled screen fast once you start hitting those fps walls on AAA games .

You can just use a duplicator and then resize the partitions from a usb or a desktop install of linux using Gparted

I highly suggest you switch to UniFi equipment for your set up at home for Wi-Fi. I would get a dream router.

Great video. Comment to the community itself. There is a lot of chatter that Steam has "screwed them", what nonsense. You were an early adopter and you expect Steam to sit on their laurels? Still not worth the upgrade for me. I just got my steam deck on their last sale so I haven't had it long. I remember when I got my first Samsung phone with OLED and I could never buy a non OLED phone again. I fear if I play someone else's OLED Steam Deck I'll have to upgrade so I have to be careful, lol.

All 1TB Decks have the etched glass screen. Valve wouldn't ship one without. Also, I like the 4 of you together, but you really have to stop talking over each other and interrupting each other. It's frustrating trying to listen.

The 64 gig does not come with the anti glare screen which makes it was more vibrante in color and blacks than the other two versions.

@@MA-xd9zl I was talking about the lcd models, only the 64 gig does not have the anti glare screen, the 256 and 512 models did, and the impact of it os really bad, hence why i refunded my 256 gig model, then ordered a 64 gig model and stuck in a 256 gig ssd, and the color was way brighter and sharper without that horrible glare screen.....now wait to you see that same anti glare screen impact on the oled model.....valve needs the option to sell them without that shit glare screen.

@@bob23301 but on the lcd only the 512g had the anti glare, that’s weird that you got with the 256, I got the 64g to swap a 1T and couldn’t be happier, but the screen was not the best so I’m definitely getting the OLED but will get the 512 that doesn’t come with anti glare, I saw the difference with and without and the blacks are crazy different.

@@MA-xd9zl Wait, i got confused, i had a 256 gig sd card that i used to bump up my storage space up to just under 800 gig, as it was indeed the 512 gig model i returned as the dullness caused by the anti glare screen was not for me, so i returned and grabbed a 64 gig model and stuck in a 256 gig ssd along with my 256 gig sd card, giving me what i have now.......a nice non anti glare screen with 512 of gig storage.....too many storage options. Lo!

I would and wait to get a better windows handheld maybe out next year. Can't go wrong with a oled steam deck, have money for both but software problems on legion Go has put me off. Still nice though if you have the spare cash buy both.

Yeah this is why I’m going for the deck, it’s cheaper it has the best screen end of, I’m not going to drain 700 pounds to wait 4 months and another handheld gets released that’s even more, I’ll spend less and be able to afford the next thing.

So disappointed in Valve, the lack of cheaper units was limited in UK…I guess scalpers maybe, anyway I hoped to get an OLEd, totally sold out..yeah I can get an older model now….its a bit like leaving the worst til last! Bro, oled deck was talked about, no one actually thought that the oled deck would be possible for this year. most people was sayin that the oled deck would not be out till when valve put together a steam deck 2, for whatever year that would of been. I always said from jump, when I bought the old deck, that it needed a oled screen, so now here comes all the other devices, the Rog Ally with top notch display, and now Legion, with the best display on the market. is killing it. so Valve had to do this now. but I'm already stuck with the Legion's vivid display, I can't go back to a smaller display

Is the resolution upgrade more noticeable and enjoyable or the screen upgrade ? I played RDR2 720p on my ally and legion go and change to 1080p , it’s so much clear .

The resolution is the same. It was just upgraded to OLED and is now 90Hz with better touch responsiveness (and it’s .4” bigger).

I missed the live steam, but I don't think y'all understand why people like myself don't want to invest in devices that upgrade too quickly. Some of us have to save up for a long time to buy something we can enjoy. It's a slap in the face if we buy it and them at become useless or inferior next year. This as why so many of us game on consoles instead of PC. PCs upgrate too quickly so it's not woth investing in. This is why PC gamers suffer from Byers's remorse and Console gamers don't. Sure the old steam deck is still usable, however the fact that they did this revision so soon means they are willing to do so on the future that can make the steam deck obsolete before the release of the Steam deck 2. To me this is a step backwards from valve trying bridge the gap between us console gamers and PC gamers.

They have explicitly said that they're not going to spin a more performant Steam Deck for a few more years. This Deck is effectively the same as Gen 1 from that standpoint. Your Deck will play games just as well as the Deck OLED

If they upgraded the app, I’d agree with you. But this is more quality of life like the switch OLED. Truth is, people could buy a switch tomorrow, and the switch 2 could be revealed the day after, it’s unfortunate, but it happens. That shouldn’t stop new hardware from coming out

I just think they went too far and I lost more of the trust I had in valve. (I also don't like how unstable their so called stable channel is, but that's for another day)

@@AntonioCunningham I agree. This isn't a revision in the sense of a ps5 slim, but more akin to a ps5 pro. Yes the performance is with in 5-10% of the original deck, but being a handheld the screen is insanely important and can't be brushed aside as something minor. To put it in another way. A Steam deck revision that I believe people wouldn't be upset about is the 6nm apu, larger battery, even an improved lcd screen (higher refresh,brighter, etc). Those are things more in line with a refresh. Slapping a massive updgrade to the screen a little over 1.5 years since release would be like sony or microsoft releasing a ps5 pro less than 2 years after the original release. People would flip out, and rightfully so.

I was on the fence to get the legion of the deck oled, but Iv come to the conclusion that yes it has a beautiful screen, but same shit performance and oled ain’t gonna save it from that fact. Emulation and mid tier indies the deck is perfect ! Let’s come to the real world starfield… Alan wake 2 destiny 2 the machine can’t cope it’s like trying to swing with the animated suit in Spider-Man 2 at 120fps. But I’m more of a modern day aaa /indie player I know the limitations of the deck and yeah the rog or legion cripple the deck, oled is oled best screen on the market but 800p is 800p the deck barley can run spyro stable 😂
