Do YOU need to keep your hands up when fighting?
in this video we'll dive into when and when not to have your hands up in a fight! Wether it be boxing, Muay Thai or MMA!
You may have seen the clip that did the rounds a while ago of Andrew tate advising NOT to have a guard: He has some valid points, but taken out of context, this could lead to a very poor outcome.
You may have seen the infamous image of connor mcgregor with his hands behind his back whilst facing then champion eddie Alvarez for his lightweight title, and we all know that outcome. Then we have Mixed martial artists like Wonderboy or Michael venum page (the guy that threw the poke ball at his ko’d adversary), karate stylists that fight with both hands down by the waist 90% of the time. Then there are the iconic moments in boxing like saul canelo Alvarez, turning his cheek to avoid a punch by mere millimetres. So why does the mantra “keep your hands up” echo across gyms around the globe? I’ve broke this down into various points both for and against a traditional boxing guard so by the end of this video you’ll have all the context to know the why and when to have your “hands up”.
So you like hands up or down when sparring or ompeting? Let me know in the comments below!

In my opinion, keeping the hands down are a beginner's mistake and a master's choice

I blocked a punch from a guy around 20 pounds bigger and still got rocked so i started dodging pretty much every punch in sparring but its not cuz im cool or skilled im genuinely scared of getting brain damage

I get that, but be careful against people who throw awkward punches. Using head movement alone can be dangerous against awkward haymakers

What would have happened if they weren’t there? Avoiding punches by dodging is the best, but having your hands up if you are going to get hit, is vital.

Its like everything it comes down to timing, you can make just about anything work if it's done at the right time and place

And speed. A lot of the time, these genius fighters aren't doing anything differently to their opponents, they are simply faster.

Awesome and well explained and unbiased video about this topic! Me personally my arms are long as shit so I love the high guard defensively because I can protect both my body and head at the same time, and I also try to implement catch and shoot counters from the high guard posture.

Winky Wright style!! It is a huge advantage having long arms! I feel for the guys with long torsos and short arms 😂. Thanks for commenting!

I always found this interesting. At the end of the day the amount of fighters that come out with their hands up and their chins tucked in as the experts advise and still end up getting knocked out tells us all we need to know lol. It's lazy advice and lazy coaching. One of the biggest misconceptions is that having your hands up will block punches - it won't. Blocking punches is a totally seperate technique altogether. Yes there's an emphasis on beginner level fighters keeping their hands up, and rightly so, because it's not something beginners are used to. They will always be comfortable carrying their hands low because that's just natural For people who actually want to know, there is no correct guard position, your guard should be relative to your opponent. If your hands are too low or too high then you're going to struggle to interact with your opponents guard.

Haha ye I think it can be lazy coaching to state the obvious "keep your hands up" 😂. You've pretty much nailed it there! Thanks for commenting!

Great video. I love your content. Btw the GSP vs Hendricks clip was mistakenly labelled as underhook when it was an overhook.

The thing is you don’t know when you’re not gonna see a strike coming so better keep them hands up unless u wanna fight like Rocky 😂

It’s situational. You have to learn the rules and get good at them first before you bend or break them.

it entirely depends on what you're doing. in mma it's better to only keep your hands up when you're in boxing range or pressured into one side because you need to block/catch body shots/kicks and leg kicks and head kicks (not to mention you have to look for takedowns). in boxing however it's better to keep your hands up 90% of the time as fighters tend to aim for the head most of the time in boxing and it's very close quarters. even when boxers put their guard down they never entirely let their guard down.

I do both. You can literally have head movement with your hands up. Rose namajunas does it all the time and shes great. Footwork, a good shifting high guard and some head movement will go a long way

Yeah, I understand teaching beginners to keep their hands up but if that's all that coaches say to them then there's a tendency to just stand there and become a human punch bag. A skilled opponent will find their way around the guard anyway, or attack another part of the body. As a beginner who's currently trying to develop footwork and parrying to avoid damage and set up counters, I feel like more emphasis should be put on these aspects. I do still keep my hands up so that I don't get caught by a shot I didn't expect (which is a lot of them when you're starting out) but there's so much more to good defence.
