Thats pretty good accommodation for a monk; I have seen much worse. Looks really new? The cleared ground is to keep all the critters away; there is nowhere for them to hide so they mostly won't come. Also the cleared ground means you can see where you are walking. Your videos are interesting and show a good understanding and appreciation for the local culture. My wifes family owned the land the village temple and school were built on; basically they gave land that was sandy and not good for farming. Only in the last couple of years have the signed the land over to the Buddhist authority for temples.

They put fine sand, with those inverted domes, around the Kutis in order for the ants get stuck and not go inside. Ants are the biggest nightmare for jungle monks because once they form a line they get EVERYWHERE in the Kuti and it's super hard to get them off because you are not allowed to kill them.
