Ever wonder when to use a pre-fab metal gate vs. building a custom gate? Let’s talk about that, welding uphill 7018, and for fun how long does it take to burn one 3/32 7018 welding rod? Oh and what keeps gate hinges centered between horizontal gate rails?

@jimskinner9234
@jimskinner9234 2 года назад
Agreed. Very few times there is any advantage to swinging thru if we are talking about pasture gates. We keep them either open and tied back, or latched closed.

I have built pipe fence for close to 12 years. I always do a hot 6010 down and a hot 7018 to cap it. Up hill takes to long in my opinion. We have never had one break that I know of. I also gusset 1 side of each as well.

Over the years I've learned that the best way to weld a gate on like this and get it level is to start with a post that's set perfectly straight. I like to level the post on two sides (90 degrees ) with a long level. Then draw a line using level as a guide down through where your hinges will be welded. I've had to weld up a lot of these where the pens are rough and set you up for failure from the start. It's much more difficult to get it right from the get go. Then it comes down to trial and error sometimes because the gate isn't level all through its swing. Then you might have to shorten one hinge or split the difference, etc. Sometimes I end up cutting hinge slits into the pipe so that you can "adjust" it to suit. Best done on a Saturday so you go to church tomorrow to make up for it if you know what I mean...

Y'know at the ranch they bought a couple mobile pipe fence sections, Overall shoddy work and I'm constantly sticking those things back together, BUT the one exceptional part of them is they have double hinges, Buddy welded his gates to another floating upright, which is then hinged to the main, structural upright. Basically one hinge bottoms out, then the next folds over and the gates can fold flat on either side of the panel. Probably the only reason we haven't junked em. Food for thought!

Cliff, I retired in 2013 and still love creating with metal. I'm helping my buddy work on his BlueBerry Farm here in MO and the 3" support pipe on one of the brush hogs had broken beside a previous stick weld that had been repaired a few times. Those previous welds looked pretty rough. I took out a portable generator and my Miller Maxstar 150 shoe box welder that I tig with. You can also stick weld with it, which I have never tried with this unit. I come from the Nuclear field so TIG is the ticket in containment. Anyway, it felt great being the artist with metal again. The job turned out perfect and my buddy was blown away by the end result. What's nice about this machine is it's small, compact and it runs on 110 or 220. I can literally hang it over my shoulder with the strap on it or hang it off the top of a ladder if I had to weld up high and my leads weren't long enough, it's that compact. The machine has pulse on it, scratch start, and High frequency. Once a welder, ALWAYS a welder. Really enjoy watching your vids, Austin. Your a good teacher and even this ole welding dog after 45 years can still learn New and better tricks. God Bless you Brother.

OK, Austin...need a little help here. Amateur welder asking. I have practiced until I'm blue in the face with uphill 7018 (and 7014 as well) on coupons of 1/4" bar tacked up as a corner, or 1/4" angle iron. I have run my 3/32" Lincoln Excalibur 7018's at amperages ranging from as low as 80 to has high as 100, with 5 amp increments in between. My travel speeds on the first pass are almost identical to yours in the video. I get nothing but blown holes in the uphill passes. What am I doing wrong?
@jonathanconway7256
@jonathanconway7256 2 года назад
Keep a short arc length. Rod at a slight uphill angle. Keep the puddle moving. Sounds like the puddle is falling away and you are burning through.
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 2 года назад
Try turning it down under 80 amps with the same travel speed or move faster with the same 80 amps plus. Sometimes when practicing on coupons the coupons will get really hot because the heat only has so far to go. Therefore you may have to turn it down lower than what the “book” says
@trowuabeatin
@trowuabeatin 2 года назад
I routinely weld 7018 uphill at 90 amps. The trick to welding uphill is a short arc length, a slight upward rod angle as well as a weave pattern. Try weaving the rod from side to side as you move upward without stopping in the middle. Basically weld the sides and the middle will fill in by itself. This way you won’t have a lumpy weld. I hope this makes sense to you. As with all welding, practice practice practice
@shortfuse43
@shortfuse43 2 года назад
@@arosswelding I'll try lowering the amps more. I just don't want a cold stringer and no penetration. As for Trow's suggestion, I'm not wanting to weave. This problem is with a "root" stringer. I do keep as short a arc as possible "short" of jamming the rod in and killing it and slight upward angle. I'll keep working on it. Thanks all for the suggestions.
