Whether you want to hang a painting, a picture frame or even a mirror, today's DIY technique shows you how to use an anchor bolt (sometimes called an "expansion bolt") to properly secure a heavy item (like a mirror) to a concrete wall.
Whenever drilling into a concrete wall, we'll need a hammer drill and the correct-sized drill bit. Today's project uses the M10 anchor bolt (10mm bolt diameter) and needs a 16mm drill bit (to accommodate the tip of the anchor bolt as well as the sleeve around the bolt).
Make sure to wear the proper protective gear before you start this project. It will be loud and dusty. Having ear plugs and a mask will greatly make this experience a whole lot better.
After the hole is drilled into the wall, you want to tighten the nut on the anchor bolt as much as you can so that the inner sleeve expands to "bite" into the concrete. (Keep in mind that once a bolt has been fully expanded into a hole, it is impossible to remove without drilling a bigger hole to extricate the original bolt.) So that's good and bad news. The good news is that your bolt will be able to take A LOT of weight (you can google "anchor bolt load limits"). The bad news is that you won't be able to remove it if you no longer need it.
Just as important as the anchor bolt are the attachment points and method of the object you are hanging. Always ensure that the attachment points to your mirror or heavy item are secure and sturdy. Also use the appropriate string or rope or hook to hang your mirror/item.
I also highly recommend having a friend/partner/spouse help you either lift the object or attach the item to hook/ring/eyelet. Yes, you can do it yourself, but you're also more likely to get injured or break the item you're hanging. So ask for help on this one!
Hope this helps. Let me know the heaviest items you've ever hung from a wall :).
