Hi everyone!
Hanging your outdoor string lights for your balcony or gazebo can’t be any easier than this!
You can easily hang the lights without using a drill.
Yes, you can hang the lights using the 3M Command Outdoor 3-5lb Strips along with the 3M Command Outdoor Light Clips. Remember, the strips only work on smooth surfaces, they do not work on bricks! Please refer to the back of the package to clarify which surfaces work best for the outdoor strips.
Here’s what you will need to hang your outdoor lights without using a drill:
1. 3M Command Outdoor 3-5lb Strips (do not use the strips from the light clips if they are heavy, it’s better to be safe than sorry) - I used 2 strips (side by side) and 2 hooks to give it more support.

2. 3M Command Outdoor Light Clips

3. Rubbing Alcohol & paper towel (from your local drug store)
4. Dot labels (from your local Dollar Store)
5. A Tape measure (from your local hardware store if it’s not in your toolbox)
6. Outdoor string lights:

If you want your lights to drape like you are at a café in Paris, without using a drill, watch my video to learn how. It works on balconies and even if you have a gazebo. Great for renters and homeowners who don’t like to drill holes in their homes.
It’s a terrific way to set the mood for your outdoor space.
Have fun and happy hanging!
Please leave me a comment on how you’re decorating your outdoor space this summer. If you would like to contact me, please email me at vikkif@spacecreations.ca.

thank you so much for this video! I want to hang lights up in my lanai but without drilling into anything (obviously, that’s why I’m here 😅) and I love your tips on how to measure correctly and to use the sturdier command strips… I would’ve just winged it and totally messed everything up 😆 Thanks for steering me in the right direction! I can’t wait to have them hanging up :)

Thanks for thinking to do this video! I have new solar lights that are very similar to yours, with the old fashioned Christmas tree light clippy things on them. I was able to string up one set of my lights on my deck side that has the railings and posts, but the side toward my house- well, I don't want to drill or pound (of course) and didn't have a clue as to how to fasten them up. We had no clue that 3M made outdoor 3-5lb command hooks. Now I can't wait to go to the hardware store to get them! :D

I am so happy you found this video and it helped you. Since winter can be a bit more wind and yuckier weather, you may want to double up on the outdoor strips (placing side by side) where the solar panel end is and at any point where the wind could pick it up. It just helps to keep it all in place.

Great idea, but we found outdoor command strips don't hold very long - the heat and humidity will not hold but for a few weeks. Drat.
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 2 года назад
I am so sorry to hear that. I live in Ontario and it is very humid. Mine lasted all season and I took them down in the late fall and put them back up again in the spring. Do you have the heavy 5LB ones? Try to double them up by having the command strips side by side for each hook. It all depends on your surface too. It must be flat and you need to clean it with rubbing alcohol before applying. Did you follow the instructions on how to apply it to your ceiling? I hope it helps.

Thank you for your comment. How about using hooks that you drill? You will need a hammer drill but it can be easy to drill in stucco without damaging it.Amazon has a wide selection of hooks for hanging lights.

I’m so lost. I don’t know how many hooks I should use or how far apart they should be. My balcony width is 8ft and the length is 15 ft 8 inches. My string lights are 93.25 ft. Please help! 😭

Thanks Lance for your comment. I used 5 lbs outdoor strips to firmly secure the hooks. If your lights are heavy, you can double up the hooks and place two beside each other with 2 , 5 lbs strips. 😊

How did you hang the net to your balcony? Thank you. The lights look amazing
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 3 года назад
Hi Loc! Thank you for your comment. I got the net professionally installed. If you’re in the GTA area of Toronto, Canada, I recommend Pigeon Tom. If not, I would do a Google search for balcony nets. You can also install it yourself. Hardware stores sell netting, anchors, wire and ties. You will need to drill into your balcony ceiling to secure the anchors and feed the wire through them and secure the netting with the ties. Make sure you space the anchors and have enough netting to sway and move on a windy day. I hope this helps.

Hey There! No, mine have stayed but I would double up and put two beside each other to secure it if you’re worried. It really depends on the exposure you have to the weather. You may want to replace them every summer season if you’re worried about them sticking. Don’t forget the surface must be flat too.

@VikkiFCreations

Depending on where you are facing, the weather can deteriorate the adhesive. I would replace them each season to ensure it stays. I've been doing that with me so that I can enjoy it all summer long.Thanks for the comment.

@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 2 года назад
The string of lights are 25 ft and the length of my ceiling is 11.5’ by 5.25’ width. I hung them a little inwards at 5’.. 25’/5”=5. Points if hung without draping. However, I wanted to drape the lights so I allowed approximately 3” per section. 25’-10” for draping is 15’’. 15’/5’= 3 points. I gave my last point 1’ more . You can always use string and measure the spacing on the floor to see how it will look and length of lights you may need if you have a large space. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope it made sense.

@@VikkiFCreations I'm confused maybe you can do some math for me 40' long 11 ft wide area and about 68ft of lights 🤷🏾‍♂️ is this possible or do I need more lights
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 2 года назад
@@callmeRah I would suggest you need more lights. You need approximately another 72 string lights so you can buy another set of 68 string lights. It all depends on how much you want the lights to hang in between the zig-zag points. You should have 3-4' between the zig-zag pattern. If you did 4' between the zig-zag pattern, it's 10 points to hang the outdoor hooks. You can measure one side of the ceiling and place hooks 4' between each one and on the other side, place hooks in between the 4' (cut it in half which is 2') to create the zig-zag pattern. Allow the lights to drape 3' between the hooks of the zig-zag pattern. Here is the math: 40'/4'=10 points to place hooks. 11'x10=110'. 3'x10=30' to drape 110+30=140. 140-68'=72' You can increase the distance between 4 points by 1' each as you are short by 4' (72-68). I hope that it's clear.

My 3m hooks eventually fell due to hot and cold weather. I cleaned the siding first. Are your still holding up?
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 2 года назад
Thanks for your message. My 3M hooks stayed up all summer long and throughout the winter season too. However, I removed my lights in the fall to bring them in until the summer months again which is now,. I will put up new outdoor strips (replacements) that hold 5lbs for each one. I use rubbing alcohol before putting them up. Perhaps double up on the hooks and place two beside each other. The 3M clear strips are specially designed to hold strongly on outdoor windows they are water-resistant, UV resistant, and can handle temperature extremes from 20 degrees F to 125 degrees F! Let me know how it goes.

Are the command strips still holding up? I have 3 x 25' strands of lights to hang, and I would rather not use hooks as they tend to rust over time. I saw another video with the command strips but they guy ended up having to super glue them in place because the tape wasn't lasting very long.
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 2 года назад
Hi There! Yes, the strips are holding strong. Since you are concerned about holding, I would recommend you put 2 strips side by side (5lbs) for each connection. For the winter, I just removed my lights but the strips are still there. I will probably replace them in the spring but I am confident it will hold each season. Just make sure your surface is flat and follow the directions.

Is that surface stucco or concrete? I want to hang on brick but can't use brick clips.
@VikkiFCreations
@VikkiFCreations 3 года назад
My surface is concrete. Was mainly smooth which is what you need for 3M strips. For Brick and Stucco, you will need a hammer drill and a masonry bit which will not damage the service. You can choose from many different hooks on Amazon or your hardware store for your string lights. You can still use minimal hooks if you want a draping effect like mine, depends on how large your area is.
