That old timey sound might feel dated, but man it means so much more when you look into the history of recording. This guy was singing into a can, LITERALLY a tin can hanging from a ceiling, and his band played live and it was recorded directly to vinyl. As in one take, no do overs, no second go round, pull the record off the turn table and walk it down the hall to be reproduced. Hank was one of the first prolific recording artists in the WORLD. The fact that the man could sing in tune in a empty room with his band playing a few feet away and cut through and drown out the echoes and the white noise is a testament to his skill. While it does sound dated we should all take a moment to think about what we're actually hearing. The sound of history being etched into a uninterruptable form. Sounds that will exist now, likely until the universe collapses.

Sometimes, it's difficult to go back too far. You might need a crushed heart and a half a bottle of whiskey to completely enjoy this. And even then, you've got bigger problems. Lol. There are several Hank Williams Sr songs that can survive the test of time on lyrical content alone. But this particular song is a bit too slow for all but the most avid fans. I appreciate you guys giving your best effort. You lasted longer than I might have on a normal night. 👍💀

Giancarlo LaGiusa Yes. Hank Senior is an all time great, but he does sound dated. Best way in is to look at (inferior) more recent covers from Cowboy Junkies and the like, but once it clicks he's a stone cold genius lyricist. Just awesome.
@babybunny1967
@babybunny1967 5 лет назад
Giancarlo LaGiusa to me it's harder to listen to because of the way it's recorded. This song is 67 years old. I don't know when recording each instrument and vocal on separate tracks started being widely used but the old songs used to be recorded with one microphone in the middle of the room. The recording technology has been improved so much that the old songs can sound pretty bad.

Word. Hank is great stuff, especially if you're at rock bottom and the whiskey is flowing. But they might be able to get into the stuff where its just him and a guitar better than the studio production stuff. When the steel guitar and other backing stuff out its MUCH harder to tell when the recording is from if you don't know Hank well.

Senior was one of the greatest song writers of all time. The sound has to do more with the machines they were using to record at the time and the distinct pops and crackles in addition to the tonal qualities created from the high end than anything else.

The production on this sounds so much more personal and genuine than modern music - I can almost imagine it was recorded in one take in his living room or back porch or something... I'm not sure there are very many modern popular musicians could pull this sort of recording off. I think some of the odd reaction here comes from the production - try to imagine what this would sound like if it had been recorded in a modern studio with modern techniques and effects, and one might a little less musical "culture shock" out of the experience....

I find that I typically dislike songs, shows, and movies more the more recent that they are. I'm 26, and I love anything from the 90's prior, including stuff as old as the 40's and 50's like Hank Sr. or the Carter Family. As a country music fan, Hank Sr. songs are pure gold to me, as well as George Jones. I don't watch any TV or listen to any current music anymore. Anyway, I wasn't expecting you guys to enjoy the sound, but I was hoping to hear more opinions/critiques on the lyrics. Either way, I'm glad that you guys gave Hank Sr. a reaction. Had published 120 songs by the time of his death at 29. 35 of those made Billboard #10 with 11 of those hitting #1. So Lonesome I could Cry can break your heart. Surprise fact. Williams was born with Spina Bifida and was in a lot of pain. throughout his life. Substance abuse did kill him, but it started from an attempt to control this pain while being a hard touring artist rather than the usual rock and roll excesses. Good on you guys for being open to musical history even when it's that far afield from what you're used to. I always liked Afrika Bambaattaa. Hank Williams was a doomed alcoholic poet who died before he was 30. He wrote his own songs. He was part of the transition from folk and hillbilly music to modern country. That whine in his voice was a traditional sound from his musical roots. So was the simple structure of his verses and refrains. He wrote and sang many great songs. You should check him out a bit, just on your own. I love your channel; keep up your good work.

I had never subscribed to a channel before this one. Love it. Kudos to you two for your willingness to explore. Not every song or style within a genre is going to be for everybody and that's okay. Whenever you decide to get back to Chris Stapleton here is something a little different. I recommend his accoustic Tiny Desk Concert, either "More Of You" or "When the Stars Come Out", or Chris's tribute to Prince, live at the Greek Theater. Can't go wrong with any of those.

Thanks for checkin out Hank Williams guys. My dad passed about 3 years ago and Hank was his absolute favorite. I grew up listening to it (and hating it) until I got a bit older and began to hear some of the blues influences in his songs like "Move it On Over" and "Im So Lonesome I Could Cry". So thanks again...

I didn’t start listening to country until I was in my 30s and I had to acquire a taste for Hank Sr and I’m so glad I did. I’m a huge fan now of both Hanks and all country music, especially the older classics.

You know what? You guys are just plain awesome. I grew up on country, so it’s easy for me to appreciate what made the genre what it is. The history behind it. Makes me happy you guys are that open minded to see the songwriting talent and the raw material and pain that went into the songwriting, even pre-1950’s like much of hank’s music. Keep at it, love your channel and your videos.

So I'm probably in the minority but I really enjoy Hank Sr. I'm a big fan of steel guitars and the tempo of the songs are relaxing. If you want a bit more of an upbeat Hank song, Kawliga is a good one.

Thank you both for reviewing this classic country music selection released about 1951. For fans of the steel guitar, this is a beautiful example of the use of this wonderful instrument to enhance the feeling/emotion of the lyrics. Don Helms was the steel guitarist for this, and many of Hank's songs. A true piece of history. Best wishes from San Antonio.

You guys do great, honest reactions. I love it that you freely admit that sometimes you have some reservations about songs before you even review them. This is perfectly natural but you still give the songs a chance.. Sometimes this gives us the best surprises of all. Please review a group called "Home Free" they are an acapella group that won "The Sing Off" on NBC. I would suggest "I can't outrun you" or "Ring of Fire" . They do Ring of Fire with Avi Kaplan from pentatonix. Its the song Johnny Cash made famous. They also do a rendition of "How Great Thou Art" which leaves people speechless and sometimes in tears. Amazing talent. Thanks again for the great job you two do. :)

I listened to country as a little kid, since it's what my mom listened to. Still love Willie Nelson, Glen Cambell, Johnny Cash... Then, I discovered Hip Hop. I still have a special place in my heart for 1980's era Hip Hop artists from back then. In the early 90's when I was in high school, I got into Rock and Metal. That's become my mainstay into my adult life, 20+ years later. This is why I love your reactions. There's songs I love that you do, and ones you don't. Then, there's reactions like this... where I really want to like Hank Williams, but it's just so dated I can't get into most of his work. There's a million songs I've suggested. I really want to see a reaction to Acid Bath - 'The Morticians Flame.' That song was part of the reason why I met my wife. Then there's the other stuff... I'd be curious to see your reaction to MC Chris. He's classified as Nerdcoare Hip Hop (I won't suggest any of the Star Wars themed songs since Ryan refuses.) However... 'Japanese Maid' would be start from him. I'm expecting laughter.

Hank III. We saw him once and he did three sets. 1st set was his granddaddy’s music (and he sounds just like him). 2nd set was Hank Jr music, the 3rd set turned into his own music of heavy metal that had a mosh pit. It was really cool to see the diversity and the growth and change of music through style and decades.
