I ran across this song again the other day. I really enjoy the down home feel of this. It also got me to pick up a recipe foe Jambalaya and it is the best. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

I saw a Chinese girl sing this on a channel titled “Eric Shi”, and I must say, the young lady would make Ol’ Hank proud!

I know this song. John Fogerty and The Blue Ridge Rangers covered it. It is great. My dad, who will be 93 this year, loves Hank Williams Sr. So do I. Hope you have a Happy Easter! Cheers! ✌️

Keep in mind that Louisiana has a large French speaking population so Hank is using a lot of Cajun / French words. He isn’t saying “my masag amio” he is saying “ma cher amio” which means “my dear friend”

Don, thank you so much for this reaction!! Just a note, Hank was definitely trying to sing similar to the Cajun style lingo and pronunciation. (I'm not Cajun but my family all come from Louisiana), He's actually pronouncing bayou close to the way I've heard a lot of older south Louisiana natives say it. He says it with a slightly more rounded "oh" but it's close. French pronunciation of 'ou' is similar to the english "oo" but has a little more rounded sound like an "oh". (o and u put together in French create that sound.) And a pirogue ("peerow") is a canoe-like boat that was invented in the swamps of Louisiana. You can use a paddle or pushpole to propel it. It's flat bottomed and apparently the best kind of boat for gliding over shallow water that round bottom boats with a keel can't. I found one source that says The Cajuns and Creoles based it on the ancient Carib Indiians' dugout canoe called a "pirogua".

Hank Senior made this famous in 1952. I became familiar with this song when it was covered by John Fogerty. This song has been covered by many people including Jo Stafford on July 20, 1952, reaching #3 on the Billboard pop charts. Brenda Lee covered the song in 1956 at the age of eleven. It was her first hit. Fats Domino covered the song in 1961.😅 Gerry and the Pacemakers covered the song in 1963. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version peaked at #84 in 1972. John Fogerty hit #16 in 1973 under the name of the Blue Ridge Rangers. The Carpenters uptempo pop version with was released as a single outside the United States in 1974 and sold well in the UK (peaking at number 12.

I started to buy my Dad country music tee shirt one of the first was a Hank Williams well it had the title of that song He started singing and dancing a bit . Well me and my Dad neither can carry tune and no one else in the family even liked country music . They gave me bad time about buying him that tee shirt . Our family likes to do that you got to have good time . Anyway he was surprised to know I knew more of the words then him . Thanks Don for the song and reaction

To answer your dance question, I learned to cajun two step (which is similar to the country two step only in the 1-2-2- count) to this song at a local fais-do-do that was held on Friday nights when I was a teenager.

I've been listening to this for 60 years and never looked up any words. To add to 39thala's info, I just found that he says pole the pirogue. I thought it was pull. This is Yvonne's wedding and the relatives are Thibodaux and Fontenot. Filé gumbo is gumbo thickened with filé which is dried ground sassafras leaves. (I knew about the roots but gee whiz.) Ma chaz ami-o is apparently from ma cher amio which is Cajun French for my good girlfriend. My Easter research. Nobody sings this like Hank but you should catch the Brenda Lee video from when she was 11.

Hank Sr spent a lot of time performing in Louisiana back in the day, long before he starting touring, and performing in other parts of the Country, and became part of the Louisiana Hay Ride Music Show because of his time in Louisiana, so he knew all the Cajun foods by name. His only Son, Hank Williams Jr, was actually born in Shreveport, Louisiana while his Father, Hank Sr was doing the Louisiana Hay Ride. Hank Sr was one of the early pioneers of both Country/Western, and Rockabilly Music, and learned a lot from Blues Artist Rufus Paine. It's a tragedy that Hank Sr's life was cut short due to alcohol, and drug use, but he also had a condition that very few people knew about. He was born with Spina Bifida, which caused him a lot of pain, and was the main reason why he consumed so much alcohol, and drugs, in hopes of soothing down his back pain. Sadly, while traveling to a show, he passed away in the back seat of his Cadillac Limo in West Virginia on New Years Day, 1953, he was only 29 years old at the time of his death. But his death only made him even more famous than he was while he was alive. He had only written, and recorded what would become one of his biggest, and greatest hits ever, but had never had the chance to perform it LIVE on Stage before his death. The Song I am speaking of was called "YOUR CHEATIN HEART".

Hank is probably one of the first country singers I remember hearing on my Mom's old radio which sat on top of the fridge. Dad used to start howling because didn't like country music. We used to sing this in Canada, around the campfire. We had a pretty good guitar player in the crowd, and I tried to translate some of those Cajun words for him so he knew what he was singing about. Hey, I saw the Easter Bunny yesterday. It really looked like someone's pet. I would have gone outside, but the weather was awful - it reminded me of NJ - freezing cold, with rain and wind. Thanks for this, and Happy Easter.

My absolute favorite Hank song. I know nearly every word and I'll sing it to myself when I'm making jambalaya or gumbo. I think the plot of the song is a wedding taking place down in Louisiana. Down on the bayou. The families involved being the Thibodauxs (Also the name of a Louisiana town) and the Fontaineauxs.
