@suomiHutsinda (I made a mistake - it's probably "Frost bitten", not "frost bites".) The last dance still rings in their ears The boy finally may thank his courage Frost bitten... They finally find to the yard from the path With ice crystals in their hair and in a hurry to the warmth "Now or never" the boy takes off his mittens and places his hot hands on the girls cheeks Frost bitten... Frost bitten with lingonberries on their cheeks, they finally may melt to a kiss.

This is beautiful. I assume that it is a folk tune. The translations are wonderful. I understand that it is some times difficult to translate Finnish to English; well, Folk Songs anyway. (i.e. Varttina's "Aijo") I will bookmark this into my wide collection of Finnish music. Thanks for posting. P.S. Since translations might not be exact, that's O.K... I could use my imagination to fill out the rest!!

@iarwhgipuhargpih It's been a year since you posted this comment, but I decided to translate this anyway. A shaggy girl and a silent boy under the stars being the lots of the cosmos The freezing wind pinches face With his sledge, the boy conveys the girl Frost bites, with lingonberries on their cheeks they wait for a kiss The heavy branches shake off their white Blind in their speed (most likely refers to the boy and the girl) they shake off the cold (continues..)

kiitos, the translation is much appreciated. Unfortunately, some of us speak shamefully poor Finnish. Yes, I would include myself in that statement.... Finnish education is amazing Swedish, AND English and often German or French too. Truly remarkable. Finland has so much to be proud of,

From what I know, this isn't exactly a folk tune. Ruuskanen's songs have a folk feeling to them, though. (And it might be hard to read the translations I made, because YT decided to screw up the lines again :D But as I've been studying English for 9 years and translated songs into English before, I'm pretty sure it's - at least - almost accurate :) )

värttinä is a different ballgame - as they often dont sing in common days finnish, but karelian dialect - and few native finns are sure about all the words in there, let alone sure enough to translate... - this is a modern ballade.

I am from western part of Finland and we have somewhat different dialects but i can understand karelian dyalect well. its not too far from other dialects. But I cannot speak their dyalect and they cannot speak our dialect but we understand each other very well. Some words are different and ways of sayng is different but they are quite well known. Of course they have in east some word that we dont know and we have some words that they dont know, or they have different meanings. There are some other dyalects wich are more different but quit easily understandable for native finnish speaker. For me this song does not sound karelian very much and I understand every word.

Learn both. It is not impossible. If you'd like, we can collaborate on duolingo. It's always good to have someone to speak the language with.

Suomi (Finnish) is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn. Believe me, I've tried it and it really is difficult.
