only in a woody allen movie would telling someone to read a certain poem in a certain book in order to confess love to them, actually succeed, without technical and mechanical difficulties. Still, as usual, a beautiful romance between Allen's camera and Allen's Manhattan.
Months after the fact, I must say I love the phrasing of that. It's a marvel he made such eloquent movies. Thank you for giving me a new way of phrasing my love for his work
What with the renewed sense of outrage about Woody Allen's personal conduct (both undisputed and alleged), I think that moments like this sequence acquire even more richness for what they say, in their mere existence, about how complicated human beings are, and about how a flawed -- even terrible -- person can produce something so beautiful. (And this beautiful sequence is itself about something awful -- a budding affair between a man and his wife's sister.) This is greatest sequence in the greatest film that Woody Allen ever made, and it will outlive both him and the rest of us to illuminate the ages.
I watched this film years before. Years before I became aware of poetry. I came across this poem one day and recall it being in this Woody Allen movie. There was always the image of this one special person that appears on my mind when I read it, and it gives me this tender feeling. But I didn't really know that was love. Such a shame.

When she reads that and the music playing is something else. Wish someone would do that as a profeesion. Reading softly to instrumental sounds. I would pay or love to find something like that.
mooch is correct - The song at the bookstore is "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" - There are many versions to listen to - Ella Fitzgerald's version is particularly beautiful
@vickymiau35....the title of the music is "Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered", in this case, played by Dick Hyman. If you get the soundtrack, very rare, it will be on there. Research Dick Hyman. He is a genius in his own right!
I cannot stop thinking how much this neighborhood has gentrified since 1986 ...I’m unsure of my NYC geography but these old grubby artists enclaves in the city are in the millions today
This may well be one of Mr. Allen's most endearingly romantic films. Spoiler Alert: Don't read on if you have not seen "Hannah and Her Sisters."...........OK?............Did you leave?............So, the reason I say so to those remaining, is that for all the suffering and angst that each of the characters endure throughout, in the end one couple rediscovers the love they have always had for each other, and the other two sisters find new loves that are far better for them than the ones they had. Wouldn't it be nice if all of us Lonely Hearts out there could do as well? (Sigh).
