I much appreciate the time you take to complete your videos, this one included. The reviews ... no ... the online "comments" people are making (not here but on "radio-head" web sites, discussion groups, etc.) about this radio are ALL over the place. I think potential buyers should use the proper context: (a) price; (b) the size of both the whip antenna & internal ferrite rod; and (c) the geographical location will you be using this radio (very rural away from most VHF sources ... close or far from a busy airport ... etc.). Surely this isn't a workhorse SW receiver (and it shouldn't be someone's first, only or primary SW receiver) but overall this radio surely has its place if one keeps their expectations in-check. I think your other video showing its Evening MW (AM) bandscan clearly illustrates this as it was pulling in quite a few distant AM broadcast stations. If nothing else, it seems like a fun AM Dx radio. My biggest concern would be breaking-off that pencil-lead thin whip antenna! Despite having fewer bands - as a pocket, travel-ready, use on-the-go radio - I'd probably favor the Eton Elite Mini due to its better construction, is US-sourced, and is less expensive. Regardless, neither is a huge financial risk! If you're disappointed & you feel like you've wasted money, skip one dinner out and you'll break-even.
Thanks Todderbert for your review. I’m not quite satisfied by SW part of your review, you should spend more time on that but overall I liked you very much, happy to read other comments of radio enthusiasts in the world. There are many mad people like me.
Hello. 1) Thank you very much for your videos. Very helpful to me! 2) I saw that you using a small transmitter, and I wanted to tell you that at my home, I run a very small and weak transmitter, and it is connected to a very old laptop that is constantly playing, and we can hear in both way: stream online - all over the world; and locally - in FM. But the important part is that I use audio processor, that is how each song sounds very beautiful, and there are no significant differences in volume between the songs. Thanks!
@@salian1531 My station is not pirated... The power of the transmitter on FM is extremely tiny and is not prohibited by law (probably nowhere). This is not a long- range broadcast, but only local inside the apartment. It was originally designed to broadcast to radio inside a vehicle.
@@salian1531 For a long time they were small transmitters for playing music with and old car radio. I suppose that in most countries signals with almost neglige power are ignored or allowed
I appreciate the extended details on this little unit. I have been watching other people make comments on it for about a year and I shyed away from it. I see that you live near me and our major airport ATIS and Pre-clearance seemed to come in pretty good. It seems all of the other unboxers have not used the unit hardly at all and I believe they don't live in an area with as many radio stations as we do here. Your video gave me some good examples of what I can expect in our metropolitan area. I want this unit for monitoring air frequencies. I really did not expect much from short wave for the price, but you got some tuned in I see! Your video helped me make a decision to put an order in today! Thank you so much for all the time you spent doing it! =KL= MP, IL PS I just found out that the Chinese company that I ordered the radio form just e-mailed me and told me they are out of stock and canceled the order. How funny! I found it there for $34.66, that seemed pretty low, I wonder why they snipe you like that.....
@@jimmartin7881 Hi Jim, I’ve been very pleased with reception overall. Speaker is weak link. The headphone Jack and ear buds or headphones use are excellent.
I’m glad you reviewed the radio. Great review. I have one and I enjoy it very much and take it just about every place I go. I set the presets for the weather channels on VHF to their actual weather channel number . Preset 1 as 162.240, preset 2 as 162.425, etc. Looking forward to your future reviews of the radio.
That is a good idea! I found around 25 air channels and use the presets to scroll through looking for activity. Seems to work. The VHF is ok, glad my local PD and FD are on even numbers. I really wish they would have went 5kHz on that band.
dgordon12 How about 161.650 Mhz and 161.775 MHz in your area?? Canada uses both frequencies on Contnuous Marine Broadcasts as Weather radio Canada for Marine forecasts.
This is an interesting one. These companies are finally getting the message, I think. Like car companies. We want higher Quality and higher Tech. El-Cheapo just doesn’t cut it any more. 📻🙂
146.880 2ms. Nice video fellow Chicagoan and cool little radio. I have a bearcat home patrol 2 witch does a lot of thing like yours. Have a great spring!
I bought one of these cheap radios myself and - like you - I was surprised at the quality of the reception. What I do not understand is why the VHF, CB and Air frequencies are not included on much more expensive radios such as the Tecson PL-880 or the Sangean 909x. Surely adding these bands would not increase the cost very much.
HanRongDa HRD-737. I bought it, found it interesting. On page 15 of the Manual, it shows that the default step of the VHF band is 0.005 KHz, but mine is 0.025 KHz, and I didn't find a way to change that. For example, I wanted to hear a repeater at 145,390 KHz, but it goes from 145,375 to 145,400, in a 25 KHz step. Can anyone who has it guide me to change this? Thanks.
The upper VHF TV band varies from 170-224 MHz, depending on the country or region, though most VHF TV channels are now Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) or American DTV. China is a little behind the curve on some radios. In most nation's all digital television is on UHF channels. And airport radio antennas are aimed at a 45 degree angle since planes are in the air. Personally. I prefer the ICOM R-6, though it has a lot more coverage than I need. Still, your reviews are great. Thank you.
I am actually kind of shocked at this radio... I like it. Its too bad they didnt have an actual antenna jack for the long wire but maybe there wasen't room for it 😁 I still like my old tube type Zenith transoceanic but this one is just a bit more portable...😂
Great review Todderbert. This looks like a fun radio to have. I like that they included an external antenna. I am a little concerned about the battery, but I guess they had to use this type for a radio its size. Have a good weekend.
Thanks, it was worth the $35 I spent. I can put this in any small pocket with ease. The battery does need to be charged once a week. The fact is it replaceable with a standard connector is good.
Had ordered one just before i saw your video. This thing is great i live a couple miles from the airport and can hear everything with squelch on. Enjoy your videos.
How far are you from your airport? I want to hear airband 122.300 mhz on VHF and I'm 4 miles away from my airport. Would I be able to receive anything?
I found an old pocket radio at a flea market, an RCA from the early 80's I think. It works but reception is weak. Still that got me started liking little radios. I have a little collection started now.
Try a fresh battery and use the radio outdoors. Indoor reception can be hampered by interference produced inside the house and aluminum or stucco siding can block signals from getting into the house. The AM band is different at night then at day. At night you may hear stations hundreds of miles away, but your local AM stations may be wiped out at night due to interference.
No CW/SSB? Funny how they omit that feature when the chip likely has the feature built in and would only require a few additional lines of software to enable...
You could always buy two of them and place them next to each other, offset by 1 kHZ or so to act as an external coupled BFO. Although, yes obviously an internal BFO with a clarifier knob would be ideal.
if it has a 455 kc like older rigs then yes a bfo type feature would work but what do these new rigs use for ifs,can someone test this and let us all know, thanks
@@@w9x7cv3vg6 If I had one I could take a crack at some r/e but I don't. Photos of the guts show the chips have been scrubbed and rumors have it the radio is SDR-based.
I was somewhat interested--until I saw the battery. I LOATHE bat packs. I want to be able to replace/charge the battery with something familiar. Recharging outside the radio seems not possible, or extremely difficult, and I read MANY AMZ reviews saying the charge connector on the radio is faulty. So, even though the price is low, I think I'll be passing on this one. Thanks for the review, though. KC0OUF
Got one today, very interesting. But question: How do I activate the squelch? When there are conversations, they are very clear but when nobody is talking, there is a very loud rush. What can I do to reduce this?
I have the TR105, it is good and I'm guessing exactly the same as the 737 it looks, feels, and performs the exact same way, but battery life is surprisingly bad at about 3 hours. I'm not sure if the 737 is any better, mine has a place for AAA's that was obviously used to put the miniature reachable in there instead. Huge mistake as it is almost unusable to take anywhere without being plugged in...
All was normal in 21:04, some Spanish speaker from a radio Station perhaps in USA (?)... then 21:17 a Spaniard speaker from my country in Europe!!! (4 times I checked) Thats is a fantastic little radio. Isn't it?
I have the same one I can hear shortwave band ok air band ok A M is good the problem is I can't hear on the VHF norrow band I have tried manual and auto tuning How to reset it factory de fault setting?
174-239mhz might be DAB, those stations on SW that sound like white noise might be Digital Radio Mondale stations and need a special radio to hear them.
DAVID GREGORY KERR Also use Retekess T130 analog VHF MICROPHONE TRANSMITTER, and it works. Any analog TV SOUND radios will receive from RETEKESS VHF transmitter
Hi Todderbert, I am unable to change the VHF tuning steps in order to receive 2Meter Ham repeaters ie: 146.865, 147.060. Is there any remedy to change the VHF tuning steps for amateur radio repeater listenin?
The cover looks like from the 1950s.All it's missing is drawing of a 6 yo boy with short red, wavy hair wearing a red and white tee shirt and a 6 yo girl in a dress, brown hair in pony tail.😂
Can someone please help me? I lost the user manual and can't find one online.. I have somehow turned on the alarm and don't know how to disable.. Can someone tell me should I disable it (or give me the link to the user manual online). Thanks
I would say at the $35 price point it is a no brainer for EDC/throwaway. I hope everyone sees that this radio is ultra thin and easy to carry anywhere. I am going to feature more videos of this radio in action.
Istruction said that there is step 0.005 MHz on VHF band but my HRD-737 has step 0.025 MHz. Is that right? Can i change that? (On VHF band, not AIR band). My HRD-737 version is 30.
Solid Enclosure. The Screen can scratch easy, something to watch. This radio includes a retractable antenna. Super Thin Profile. If you want Shortwave along with FM, AIR, NOAA, 2M HAM and VHF-Lo this radio is for you. If you want a quality FM stereo and a Strong AM radio the CC Pocket and DT-400W are radios to check out.
Please if you know respond :) Kinda dumb question but I'm newbie in radios . So I know every frequency at my local airport so if I put correct freq. I will hear everything on that freq?
It is a simple wire that came with my Tecsun PL-380. You can buy the Sangean ANT-60 22' wire that is retractable..this is the one I use upstairs with great results, at Amazon: amzn.to/2RHxuVm
Hello, I am looking for a cheap air band radio to buy to listen to aircraft. What ones would you recommend? I am aiming for £40 or less. And would prefer to use amazon as I know I can return. Thank you :)
I bought mine from eBay on a slow boat from China. Took three weeks and saved some money. Check the eBay link out. $35.77 was the lowest...just checked 7:07 UTC May 12th, 2019.

Checked this on eBay but conflicting info. Says 'May not ship to Canada' but also says ships to North and South America. I pointed out to seller Canada IS in North America. Seller replied same, 'Cannot ship to Canada'. Anyone know why? Anyone know how/where we Canuck radio fans can buy one of these?
ALFREDO RONQUILLO R-108 had a wide VHF FM broadcasts from 30 - 230 MHz, R-108 tunes FM from 64-108 Mhz and Elpa ER-C57WR tunes FM from 76 or 87 - 108 Mhz. So you can receive VHF TV sound broadcasts from HRD-737 / HRD-104W.
The 368 has SSB, ETM, Numeric Keypad...I would pick that one all day long, but if you need VHF-Hi, then the HRD-737 is a top choice, along with the newer HRD-747 coming out...suppose to have SSB as well.
@@promilaoishi8392 Yes, they make tuning much easier. Especially if your using Shortwave. Medium Wave(AM Broadcast) band is much better on the 368 as well. Single Side Band(SSB) allows you to listen to HAM radio operators as well. If you like the size and shape of the 368, I would pick that as my first choice.
@@todderbert i live in Dhaka capital of Bangladesh, here AM and FM reception is quite good but what is the characteristics of Air band , CB and VHF? is it allow me to listen more radio stations?
Possibly, if you can get close enough with the 25kHz stepping. I can on most of my channels, but there were a couple Fire Depts. I couldn't dial in, but my Bearcat 75XLT could.
Which radios would you recommend as a communications receiver? I mean ones that have CW and SSB reception. 160 meters to 10 meters would be nice. Basically, so one can check a transceivers output so it can be relatively deaf without a long antenna on it.
The Eton Satellit may be a good choice because it has a DX/Local switch and can receive CW with 10Hz fine tuning. Just an idea. You may want to build an attenuater as a saftey Also a front end protector.
I use a C.Crane FM Transmitter 2 set on 92.9 so I may broadcast RU-vid Royalty free music with my MP3 player over the local airwaves. I would do a FM band scan, but even one second of music can cause this video to be blocked in other countries.
I wouldn't call it useless, it tunes at 5kHz steps and I've found nearly fifty active frequencies near me. I will upload a video in the future showcasing the Airband and VHF.
Ron Star Some Countries already used Analog TV broadcasts. If you’re in America, it’s obsolete. If you’re in Thailand and tune to 78.00 to 79.00 Mhz, VHF-N, tiu may hear a conversation in Thai. Mostly taxi and truck drivers.
Ron Star TV Sound radios sold in USA or China, you can tune to RUSSIAN AND JAPANESE FM frequencies. And TV sound radios sold in Japan, you can use it Worldwide. A
Great video very good radio for price heres a tip small eadio good reception use long wire end of wire connect to a coil of wire say 2 inch coil of copper wire like you get on small reel , no direct connection just move coil near to radio at the top it works good with every radio with built in MW aerial JUST MOVE COIL FOR BEST RECEPTION alll the best
Hi Todderbert. I have just purchased one of these in the UK. Radio has same name here as there in the States. I am a radio enthusiast myself and just love collecting radios, especially SW feature radios! While its no Tecsun, Roberts, Grundig or XHData, I feel this little radio for the price is a good little portable radio and ticks all the boxes! I enjoy your Channel alot, keep up the great work & stay safe. Cheers & best wishes, Cocoaa x 👋😊👍📻
Now here's a radio to hand carry if police scanners aren't allowed at the airport. Just cover the airplane logo with any sticker of your choice and you're good to go! Happy scanning!
I took 2 on airports on my carry on. From YYZ (Toronto Pearson), transit via LHR (London Heathrow), HKG (Hong Kong) all arrival to Manila (MNL). Also took mine from Ninoy Aquino Airport in Manila, listening to ATIS on 126.400 MHz, no problem transiting to HKG airport and Tokyo Haneda. They just checked my bags at Haneda Airport. Obscene and counterfeit objects aren’t allowed in Japan. No problem either.
Your channel is addictive. Seriously! I'm scoring a radio roughly every month or six weeks. This is definitely my next one. Probably with the 104, so I can grab the wrong one on the way out the door.
