Legendary live performance from 1994, Seiji Ozawa with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Hans Gansch on Trumpet. Taken from a heavily used VHS Tape, Picture and Sound is not the best quality, but the music is. Every Trumpet Player needs to see this !

Legendary performance, starring one of my favourite trumpet players, the incredible Hans Gansch!
@una4all1

Trumpets are indeed incredibly powerful and display incredible stamina in this insanely difficult piece. The high notes are high, unflinching, loud, sustained and sit atop the rest of the ensemble as if the trumpets are suspended 20 feet in the air above the rest of the orchestra. There is no sign of fatiguing over the course of the piece either, which is a big distinguishing factor in various recordings of this piece. To this point, please note: 4:33, 20:24, 40:00. Additionally, the passage at 21:57 reveals the virtuosity of its player. Just love this. Wish I could find a better quality recording.

I'm so glad to have it on original CD. The mightiness of the performance is blowing my mind whenever I listen to this. Hans Gansch in his "badass" times. I could hear Strauss' masterpiece several times live, Thomas Lachtners performance and powerplay on principal trumpet in St. Pölten with the "Tonkuenstler Orchester" in 2009 is the only one I know which is equal to this.

This is the best performance of the Alpine Symphony I've ever heard. It's very sad comparing how good the Vienna Philharmonic's trumpet section was and how bad it's today. Look at their performance at the Proms in 2012. The solo trumpet is simply embarrassing.
@FireOfElm
@FireOfElm 7 лет назад
And due a few not absolute perfect peak tunes performing at BBC proms you are bashing the whole today's trumpet section?

He played Alpine Symphony with a monster cold sore on his lower lip-hats off. At least he didn’t add vibrato as is common in American orchestras- thank God.
@loadedbass7111

False. Vibrato is not common at all. Stop bashing American orchestras. If anything American orchestral players don't miss. :)
@skisunfb
@skisunfb 6 лет назад
Loaded Bass You must be kidding. In fact Listen to recordings featuring the iconic Bud Herseth playing Mahler 5, Alpine Symphony, Don Juan etc. One can forgive the un-Germanic vibrato because he had a great sound, articulation and musicality, even in his eighties - a great player in the American tradition. Nowadays you get this methodical da da da articulation that has become an American trademark - especially in the trumpets. Yes, they may miss less but that’s no surprise when you’re playing an overly sustained loud legato (which is often erroneously called tenuto) with almost no front end (all vowels and no consonants). The German language is rich in consonants and that’s what German composers from Beethoven to Wagner, Bruckner, Strauss and Mahler expect from trumpets and the rest of the brass - as well as singers! I much prefer character and correct style, as shown here, even with the occasional miss. Live Herseth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OxS5zeeA53I.html Live Gansch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QpitDloV-GA.html Live: Phil Smith NY Phil: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8CpuO0A7qDY.html

Just as God had prepared a Garden for man’s physical well-being, I believe He commanded all of creation-trees, plants and animals, everything-to produce music for the soul of man. Man had only to listen with the ear of the heart to hear the symphonies pouring forth from the cosmos: Composers had only to listen and RECORD what they each heard through the filters of each ones individuality! You don’t accept what I say? Okay, but will you say that man himself originated the other-worldly music attributed to Strauss, Bach, Beethoven, Mahler and others?
