I thought i was gonna be so bored listening to richard strauss because of his 10000s operas, but i was so very much mistaken, classical music once again humbles my opinion and showes that both symphonies and operas are the hardest of musical composition where you would obtain the highest of feelings.

No bump needed and the quick break at 28:10 before confidently reattacking the G to make the top B after soar across the orchestra is pure focus set on delivering an unforgettable experience for the audience, FRS is lucky to have him. No. Too slow. The Previn with the Vienna from about 1993 is the best. Previn had a better understanding of where you let the brass have the show. Video director is clueless at 26:50 and on as to where the focus of the orchestra is. One of the signature homages to Franz Strauss in all of Richard's work and this clown is panning the orchestra, Third trombone is too timid but I blame Andrés. Mehta had the idea in the 60s to out schmaltz the Vienna with the LA Phil, but went too far on this piece (he hit the Sinfonia Domestica perfectly). 25 years later Previn nailed it.

R Strauss ... what an orchestral chameleon! Operas, symphonies, lieder, tone poems, chamber works. How extraordinary! Gotta' say the storm and torrents of wind are remarkably vivid and ... even frightening, if you've ever been in the Alps during one (I have). If they played this 1/2 or 1/3rd the times they played the Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Strauss would be way more popular and better known than now.

As someone, a tiny bit of a pianist and a clarinetist, who over my many years has had a number of musical heroes, Richard Strauss being a very early one. But of all his many compositions, including Four Last Songs, I actually knew little of The Alpine Symphony. But now here I am returning and discovering this remarkable creation for the first time! And the more I listen I am believing this may be his greatest, and most emblematic of this truly great man. And what a fantastic performance, could I have arrived at a better place?!! Strauss reportedly claimed to have found more joy in stomping on the cockroaches in the villa in which he composed this, than as to working on the very composition itself. Orchestrations were completed in a mere 100 days, (record times for such a monolithic masterpiece). The width and duration of the once-popular CDs of the 80's and '90's was determined by the duration of this actual work. I recall receiving the CASSETTE version of this at Christmastime, 1985. This piece is--without question-- my favorite symphonic work in all the repitoire. I sit, stunned in receipt of this performance. All my love--- from the USA-- not only to this Orchestra (10/10), but to the people of my Fatherland..and to Strauss, himself.--Jake

I had to come here again. This must be the better Alpensinfonie ever. This time I could not resist the utter beauty of the "after storm" (44 and on) and had tears running down my face. I have to give my best regards to whoever directed the filming of the piece because that is the prime reason following the score is so easy.

I was going to say that I enjoyed this even more than the Maestro did, but he brought it all together with this phenomenal orchestra, so the sense of accomplishment must have been thrilling beyond words. The way he danced through he performance made it as fun to watch as it was to listen, and his smiles and gestures of appreciation to the players throughout the piece were wonderful to see.

Barletta Francesco Roma. È incredibile il suono che questa orchestra riesce sempre a trasmettere a chi ascolta. Estrada è meraviglioso nel dirigerla facendoli suonare tutti come se fossero un solo strumento!!! Grazie grazie mille a tutti!!!!

I do not understand why this orchestra is so underrated??
@bryangl1
@bryangl1 5 лет назад
James T. I don't think 'underrated' is the word - I think, 'as yet under-discovered' is more accurately the case. Most people who discover this band are highly enthusiastic about them (including me, although I'm a little less enthusiastic about this performance - and in a minority!). I believe they are presenting a growing challenge to Berlin who, while maintaining their high standards, in some ways rely on their reputation perhaps a bit too much..

Because: Achieve fame enough and go to bed. In musical art there are many orchestras that have got its fame; whether they are good or not it does not matter... It its name that matters. That's it, Mr. Taylor!!

@@bryangl1 I cannot understand why you are unenthusiastic about this amazing performance. Why the orchestra and conductor failed to receive a standing ovation is beyond me. Utterly brilliant.
