Thanks for providing such a detailed, and comprehensive review. You speak in a clear way, and pace that was easy for me to understand despite a slight accent relative to my part of the world. You were able to cover a lot of information as quickly as possible. I learned a little about the functionality of each in a way that you cannot by simply reading the manuals. I think I will be keeping my Hantek, because I need the longer battery life, and easier user interface more than the higher level functionality of the Owon for the work I'm doing.

Very enlightening, thanks for the detailed information. I've been looking at the Hantek as my first scope for various tasks (mostly repairing, altering, and maintaining old computers and CRT monitors, but also because my son is interested in electronics and I'd really like to show him how waveforms relate to sounds as we hear them) but it definitely sounds like I should spend some time considering the OWON before I make my decision.

Thanks for the comparison! I wanted to buy Hantek (because I have a desktop scope from Hantek, and it works well), but bought Owon instead after watching your review. Tested it with a 200 MHz probe to make sure the the probe is not the limiting factor. The max frequency this scope can measure is 84 MHz. At this frequency it still shows a decent sine wave of proper amplitude and shows the frequency. At higher frequencies it still can draw the curve on screen decently, but can't measure frequency anymore (shows ???). The signal generator in it is not great, but definitely usable. Overall, a fantastic tool sold at reasonable price.

I recently purchased an OWON HDS2102S. There are a lot of qualities I like about the HD72 O-Scope. From what you mentioned, I'm now glad I made the investment towards the HDS2102S since it is a true RMS meter which is important for my work since I deal with a lot of electricity issues on how electronic devices react to electrical changes. Thanks.

What a great review. The selling point for me is the current drain in standby. Knowing I have to charge the batteries in less than every six months would annoy me. And, that's if you don't use the meter. Now i use the meter maybe twice a month, I better keep an extra set of batteries laying around. Thanks for posting such a great review. Barry

I've got mixed feelings about this review; I like the features of both! Mostly the DMM I'd use the most, so the slow continuity on the Owen I'm not pleased about; Hantek has 3rd party software too that works with linux! The function gen I'd use in the field to trick bits of PLC gear. Great video either way mate!

I feel like a major difference in the way those two scopes display the waveforms (especially visible in X-Y mode) is that the Hantek is capturing a single sample sweep, displaying it, then going around again, whereas the OWON's display seems to be a blend of multiple triggering rounds. Hence you see a thin trace jumping around on the Hantek, whereas a thicker but smooth and stable blended trace on the OWON. I wonder if that is a mode configuration on either of them? I know on my Rigol bench scope that's a setting I can adjust, to get either behaviour.

This was a great review and comparison. The recessed port is a geat idea as it does not poke out too much on the bench. Great job Kerry! Lot's of great comments, relative to the specifications, and so really nice experimental head to head measurements. There is one area though where you could make a major improvement, Sadly, a lot's of these Chinese Handheld scopes list fantasy-land specs claiming "Real Time Sampling" up to some impressively high frequency, but actually silently switch to what euphemistically used to be called "equivalent time" multi-pass sampling for all the fastest ns/div sweep ranges, making them USELESS for any kind of high speed one shot capture (like the the FNIRSI 5012H). "Equivelent Time" sampling is a technological fossil record technique that was used ages back (some time around the late Jurassic I think), in Dinosaur DSO scopes by big-guns like HP and LeCroy to boost their claimed sampling bandwidth. It works by taking multiple passes at the waveform, at multiple points in time, over multiple cycles - and therefore can ONLY work with a static perfectly repetitive non-changing waveform. In the modern world, most digital waveforms are anything but 'repetitive and non-changing' so all of those Dinosaur DSO "equivalent time" oscilloscopes became extinct virtually overnight when, like a meteor dropping into the Yucatan, Tektronix dropped the TDS-210/220 series into the market and showed everyone that a reasonably priced scope really could offer REAL no-B.S. "real time" sampling at 1 Gs/sec. Unfortunately, some of the manufactures of these Chinese handheld scopes have figured out how to extract the Dino DSO DNA and resurrect "equivalent time" sampling so they can cut corners and shave a few bucks off the cost of their scopes (like the FNIRSI 5012H) . The careful sine wave tests you have done so far prove NOTHING because any repetitive signal will sample fine under "equivalent time" sampling mode. But it's not that hard to find out if "equivalent time" sampling is being used. Just set up a high speed non-repetitive signal, like a very high speed SPI data bus signal running at say 30 Mbits/sec (generated by something like a raspberry pi pico, or pi zero), and then try to one-shot capture a SINGLE SPI DATA FRAME and see if you get a waveform that accurately captures the data that was sent, or one that is total garbage (which will happen if the high speed sweep ranges use any kind of non-realtime "equivelent time" sampling). Technically, at 90 MHz analog bandwidth, and at a 250Ms/s sample rate, all these scopes should handle the fundamental, second, and third harmonics of a 30MHz NRZ data stream, allowing the data to be rendered reasonably well, but it shure would be nice to see some examples of how badly each scope's anti aliasing interpolation filters chew up the data waveform (or whether it can even be captured at all) before I go out and plonk down a couple hundred bucks to buy one.

it's amazing it takes so long to start reading a resistance. is it something a firmware upgrade would fix? also, something i'm curious about, in single (single shot) mode will it record both channels or only the channel it triggered on?
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 2 года назад
I am sure the firmware can be tweaked to make it better but the resistance measurement speed is largely dependent on the DMM chip used. On your other question, the single shot behavior is similar to all other DSOs. When you have both channel enabled, it will capture data from both channels when triggered from either of the channels. Hope it helps.

I got my HDS242S today. Seems to be pretty nice. One thing I have found is it will not charge or connect using real USB-C. So a dedicated USB-C charger will not work and connecting it to a windows machine with USB-C will not work. If you use a USB 2/3 to C cable it works fine and you can use a USB 2/3 to female USB C and then used a USB-C to C cable. I put my RF Frequency Synth on it and check it's response. The frequency measurement limit is 47.9MHz, anything past that and its won't give a reading. But it displays waveforms way past 100MHz, though with 250MS/s Youre going to have aliasing issues if you go high. So I think the hardware is the same on the 40, 70, and 100MHz units, they just crippled the measurement. Wonder if they can be hacked. Bet that's why they dont post the firmware updates online. But this is all fine for me, if I need faster and slightly less portable I have my LeCroy Waverunner and a Tek 2465.

So after messing around a bit I found the USB-C cable work in one position, flip it over and it does not work. So it sounds like they did not wire the connector in right.

Ive been looking for a reasonably priced portable scope and the Owon is better in almost every way. I don't need fancy software to upload waveforms. The high standby current of the hantek is completely acceptable. A battery powered meter should not draw any current at all when off. Its obviously not a real power switch.

I noticed that the HanteK retains settings after being powered off, and back on. That memory storage feature comes at some minor power occupation cost. I prefer the longer battery life when in use, as you never know how long troubleshooting may take.

In my opinion both models are quite competitive as both have some pros/cons and I really wish to have some mixture of these two. Hantek has much better software application that enables not only oscilloscope, but DMM and AWG as well. However, for the AWG I cannot find a way how to import waveform manually (based on demo app w/o instrument, manual and videos), only draw by mouse.... For both oscilloscope and DMM you can export data in a convenient way. For oscilloscope the exported waveform has always 1200 points, approx 100 pts per div. The approach to oscilloscope functionality is also different - Hantek always displays single waveform trace (with significant jitter and unstability), while Owon has two acquisition modes (Peak and High) and is able to display something like overlay of mentioned 10.000 acquisition or so, which is very close to analog behavior/data.presentation. Hantek has much better operational battery life, Owon wins in standby life. Hantek has much better PC application (including quite nice Math enabling FFT, A+B, A-B, AxB), with more straightforward control, OWON supports remote control (even data acquisition) using SCPI, which can be great!!!! However, SCPI enables control for oscilloscope and generator only, not for DMM. And for the generator, you can only controll it, no upload of data samples.... I have also read that Hantek has DC isolated USB interface.... as a result, Both product have significant advantages in certain aspects: Hantek - power consumption, generator, way better PC software (access to all measurement functions), FW updates, pass/fail crietria for waveforms (refs + deviation), probably also built quality + isolation of USB (haven't verified) Owon - trace presentation+acquisition in oscilloscope, handling, display, standby power consumption, remote control of some functions via SCPI, truRMS DMM,

@@KerryWongBlog Thank You Kerry, but I think there is some misunderstanding. I have this SW already installed and there are many posibilities how to export data to various formats. However, I haven't seen any option in the SW (in DEMo mode the AWG is not working), how you can upload your own data to the Hantek's generator, only drawing signal by mouse.... This is whai I was asking. And is sad that there is no protocol for Hantek to enable remote control as for Owon. However, for Owon you can control only SCOPE features and its PC app suports SCOPE/AWG modes only as well (probably using the same protocol), but still no way how to upload waveform to AWG even if you can access OWON as USB storage.... So even if they look so identical, they are actually very different almost in every function, UI approach etc....
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 2 года назад
@@82sledge Yes I pointed this out in my comparison video. For the OWON you can't upload your arbitrary waveform at all and it could be a deal breaker for folks need that functionality. For the 2D72 though you can design your waveforms using a CSV file. I demonstrated that in my review video for the 2D72.

@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 2 года назад
Hantek's PC software is very comprehensive, everything you can control on the Oscilloscope you can control in software. Whereas for the OWON, the software is very limited. You can only use it as virtual scope, that's about it.

can someone chime in who uses oscilloscopes for automotive on what the bare minimum specs for a scope you recommend/what device you would recommend for a diy automotive user new to scopes? With so many choices my heads spinning.i just want somthing that will get me through most diagnosis but not somthing useless nor overkill.
@pdirv
@pdirv Год назад
I know this comment is from 9 months ago, but if this is still something you're looking for an answer on, you can use either of these for automotive. I have the Owon, and I'll use it early on in a diagnostic, especially if I was already in that area to start with using the Owon as a multimeter. Or in a tight space under a "dog house" in a motorhome when I don't want to take out my Pico and a laptop. Regarding "bare minimum specs", it's not as easy as that, but as a reference point, a very common automotive specific scope that a lot of people use is the 4225A picoscope. Comparing the Owon at least against those specs ( not all of these will impact every type of, but worth noting ): Pico has a sampling rate of 400MS/s vs 250MS/s in the Owon. Pico has a 20MHz bandwidth, this Owon is higher, and the cheaper 40MHz Owon still has the same other stats, so you could go with the cheaper one. Pico has 12-bit resolution, I *think* Owon has 8-bit. You can look up what each attribute means to see if it would impact what you want to do. Beyond that, one of the huge differences you're going to deal with is what automotive specific software is going to do for you. Especially with the Pico. It will automatically convert things like mV to amps, and maybe the most important feature for someone who is just starting is the waveform library. Which on top of doing all the conversions can overlay/stack your known good on top, while looking at your live feed come in on the bottom ( or vice versa ) and see not only that you have a signal, but what yours looks like versus what it *should* look like. This won't matter as much over time as you get familiar with sensors, and what they should look like, but it's a huge benefit early on. One other note is regardless of the approach you take, and once you have an understanding of a scope is how to properly access the signals you're looking for. So if you're just doing this as a DIY with your one vehicle, see if you can find a PDF online or something with all the wiring diagrams for your generation. Otherwise, you may want to invest in something like ALLDATA, or something that may not only get access to your wiring diagrams, but also provide specific instructions on which wire is a signal wire, power, ground, etc, so that you're properly backprobing the correct wires. Lastly, Pico constantly maintains their software, and it's quite mature after all of these years. In summary, every tool has a purpose, so you can use this for automotive, but if you were going to spend $200 and only ever use it for automotive, and have a Windows laptop or maybe even a desktop on a cart, I think you would get better results out of the Pico, especially if you're not familiar with an oscilloscope yet. If you are familiar with an oscilloscope, don't mind having to do some conversions, like the idea of the multimeter/multiple purpose unit in a smaller footprint, and are going to work on things other than vehicles, then one of these units may be an easy choice. I ultimately went with the Owon, one of multiple reasons being the TrueRMS.

I would like you to bring to your channel a review of the FNIRSI 1C15 and comparison with the Hantek 2D72, since it is a lighter, smaller and cheaper oscilloscope, but it promises superior performance to the Hantek, and for about 80 u $$, FNIRSI is a company that is starting, but is giving a lot compared to the low cost of its equipment.

Completely agree, the minimum of 50mV/division in the Fnirsi 1013 and 1014 limits them a lot, and I hope the designers realize this serious detail. I am currently using a Sigpeak 2512G, 10mV/div and I am delighted, it works better and more precise than the Hantek 2D70, and it has 128k of depth memory against the 6k of the Hantek or 10k of the Owon

One thing when displaying the high frequencies from your sig generator, you MUST terminate the cable!!!! Otherwise, your measurements are meaningless due to reflections in the cable.
