I've seen this movie twice. The movie is very dark, but really all you can do is laugh at how dark it is. To the people who won't watch it due to the child abuse subject matter, the abuser is not shown in a positive light. It's not like it's being glorified. These kind of people exist among us, and they normally don't look anything like you would think they would look. Turning a blind eye to something doesn't make it go away. This movie both shocked and challenged me. It's a piece of art that you don't get often. I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you can deal with the subject matter.
I showed this film to a couple people and one of them still hasn’t spoken to me in 20 years because of it. Oh well. It is a deeply effed up film though. You know what Criterion needs to give some love to? “Man Bites Dog”
I showed the movie to my mom because we both loved weird indie cinema that pushes the envelope. It was fair game because she was the one who introduced me to Harold and Maude when I was a kid. That movie had a meteoric impact on my developmental years.
Todd Solondz is a mad genius. I thought maybe Welcome To The Dollhouse, my favorite of his, would've been a Criterion contender. But I'm happy to get Happiness from them as well.
Love this movie! I heard someone call Tod Solondz films, "humiliation porn," and thought that was fitting. I love his work, and this one is hilariously rough. Are you guys going to talk about the Greg Araki set from Criterion? I'm so excited for that.
I just pretty much discovered the quality of 4k discs and how amazing the picture is with my 83 inch Oled. You guys have invaluable insight into why go physical 4k Now I’m super motivated to build my collection out. I’m finishing my basement with a 5.1.2 klipsh sound system with Valencia seating! Super pumped and will upgrade to a 100 inch Oled if they ever drop pricing on them!
@@cjp8155 I bought the original DVD as a blind purchase in 1998 not knowing anything about the movie. The Clowes art hooked me. I was at once horrified and entranced at what I watched. Then I pined for years upon years for a proper release. The original DVD was not anamorphic and looked horrible on HD TVs. And I watched everything Todd did since then. Yes worth a blind purchase.
