Another tribute to Jack Lord, the legendary actor best known for his role as Steve McGarrett on the long-running crime series Hawaii Five-O. Today would have been his 90th birthday. Hau'oli lā hānau, Jack!
Thank you, Vanessa! Jack was also the first actor I ever loved, and the first whom I ever noticed. I was born a year after Hawaii Five0O ended. I also want to go Hawaii someday. I only wish Jack was still there so we could meet him.
It's long time ago! But, in my mind , Jack Lord always looked like 40 years old forever! I was born 1980, after I saw the DVD of Hawaii five-o, I want to say: Jack Lord is a handsome man, and I love him in my mind!! Happy Birthday to Jack ! Thanks you share.
Great tribute to a great actor. I wonder how Jack would feel 'bout the NEW 5-O. Hmmmmmmmm. Perhaps he'd point his finger at the creators and say " BOOK EM Danno!"................
Yes , Jack was 77 and died of congestive heart failure . He had other complications that contributed to his death . He was a good man and he and his wife did much for the people of Hawaii who he was very grateful to for the success of Hawaii 50
beautiful song, beautiful video, what a thrill!!! I was one year when Hawaii five O finished in 1980 but I loved it. Jack Lord is the first actor that I loved and een today I do not grow tired of looking at these old episodes. My dream? to go to Hawaii. I miss you Jack!
@JandJComedyBrigade Thank you for your comment. I'm glad that the original Hawaii Five-O is still picking up new fans. Yes, Jack was quite a man, and brought a lot of himself into the role of Steve McGarrett.
@2008ljr You're welcome. The song is called "Where Does the Sun Go?" and is sung by Jackie DeShannon. I miss cop shows like this, too. They were straightforward, intelligently-written, suspenseful, and superbly-acted. There was no over-the-top violence, sex, profanities, overacting, underacting, or juvenile antics on the parts oif the characters.
@sapphiretaurus Thanks for that birthday video; I loved it! I'm a "new old" fan of Five-0. I always used to watch it when I was a teenager, and haven't seen it since. Now I just got season 1 from the library, and am really amazed - I didn't remember it as being that good. I'm a fan all over again, but I think much more than the first time around. Thanks again.
Enjoyed this very much..what was it about Jack Lord that keeps us hanging on ? I think a hint of passion and compassion that was always there and lives on in his work.
@thepoeticamerican Thank you! I love that photo, too, It's one of my favorites. I have another one from that same photo session where he has a great big smile on his face, and his blue eyes look so deep and stunning!
@w520520 Thank you. He is one of the most handsome men I have ever seen. This is a beautiful song and is still available on CD. It sounds like it was written for Jack!
@charmedspice50 Thanks. Time does fly. Jack would probably have kept to himself and not bothered much with the media, like he was doing when H5-O went off the air. He'd probably be cursing that hideous remake, though!
Sadness, and wonderful reminiscences of the lads of Hawaii 5-O from a fan in southwest London. Most have passed on now, God Bless 'em, but they're still in my thoughts.
Thanks, drcurv. Watching Hawaii Five-O provided me with many happy memories, then and now. RIP, to those cast members who have gone on to that great island in the sky.
His son's name was John, named after him. He never had a son named Steven. I don't know where the character name "Steve McGarrett" came from. "Danno" was the nickname of a childhood friend whose real name was Danny. When they were filming, Jack yelled out to James MacArthur, "Get him, Danno!" and James asked Jack what he called him. Jack said the name slipped out, and explained it was the nickname of a childhood friend and, ever since, it became a nickname for McGarrett's second-in-command.
I just read the comment that Gene Roddenberry wanted Jack to play Capt. Kirk on Star Trek. Wow, now there's a thought...I wish I could have seen that even in just a pilot..I feel like it would have been Bill Shatner (whom I enjoy) on steroids...
That was not a hairpiece. That was Jack's own hair. He had a full head of hair which he was able to style differently. That is not rare in men. His hairstyle changed 4 to 5 times when H5O was on the air, which means he had to have been wearing that many hairpieces if he did, which would not be easy to keep secret. His hairstylist, Cherie Huffman, said Jack's hair was his own. I spoke to some actors who worked on the show, and they also confirmed it.
I understand that he lost a son, thirteen years old in his past. From what I understand that child's name was Steven. Do you know if his character's name was in memory of that child.
@katgirlblue You're welcome. I'm also a "new old fan" of Five-O. I watched it as a child and liked it, but didn't get into or appreciate it as much as I did until a few years ago. I have Seasons 1-10 on DVD, and will get 11 and 12 when I have the money. Hawaii Five-O is one of those shows that pulls you in and, once it does, you don't want to be released.
The story about Jack asking for 2nd billing in the James Bond films was never verified. Richard Maibaum, the screenwriter, claimed it happened in a 1983 interview, but there are no contemporary sources that mention it. Maibaum, being the writer, would not have been involved in casting, and that he told the story after Jack became famous and rumors about him being demanding, among other things, were spread right and left, he could tell such a tale and not be questioned about it.
Jack appeared on the Merv Griffin show in 1964 and was asked by Griffin why he wasn't in the next Bond film. Jack said he wasn't asked back. If he never asked to reprise the role, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to ask for 2nd billing, more money, and a larger role as Maibaum claimed. Jack's not going to lie about such a thing on national television, where people who work with Broccoli and Salzman are watching and could tell what he said.
