On April 8, NDI celebrates the rich culture, traditions, and heritage of the Roma people. It is also a day to highlight the plight of Romani citizens, who continue to be deprived of fundamental rights, dignity and equal opportunities guaranteed to them by their countries' constitutions.
NDI has been working with Romani civic and political activists for more than a decade, building their capacities and expertise to serve as elected leaders, community organizers, advocates and government watchdogs. With programs in Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia, NDI has engaged nearly 4,000 Roma, who have made marked progress in advancing Roma rights.
To mark this year's International Roma Day, the Institute asked some of its participants and alumni the word "participation" meant to them.
