A slip of the foot and chewing up hours of work would be upsetting. But I do know it's possible. There's a dozen ways to skin a cat, just have to find the one that works best for you 😎

I haven't. There are some plans out there for a bead roller, Karl at Make it Kustom released his, they are quite obviously similar, but we where considering selling this one and on the fence about releasing the Dxf. The English wheel, none of the measurements are actually critical, and would change depending on the wheels used. If you watch the video though, there is enough info there for someone with basic fabrication skills to reproduce it, and I listed the acme parts I used from McMaster. After 20 years programming for Cnc use, I do tend to be a little tight with my files, but I tried to make sure that someone could replicate my work if they followed along, and I'm considering doing a tutorial explaining the process if someone wanted to design their own. I know people want the short way out, I want to show people the skills to get there without me.

It's been a slamming busy week my friend. I can't express how happy I am to see the same names over and over again. So after almost 2 years of research, I think you're right and you are wrong. Many of the direct drive "kits" that are put together use a discontinued motor with a planetary drive. You find them advertised on HAMB and other places. They use a lovejoy style coupler, and can be controlled down to the speeds we need, and quite possibly have the torque as well. However, having said that, being in Canada everything gets more interesting. The motor I'm thinking about, (and ill dig up an actual part number if you're interested) while it is available In the US, a horrible exchange rate combined with shipping across the border seems to make it more expensive, I did the math and I was going to be 4-500 into it, and my gear ratio was set to the planetary reduction of rhe motor. With what I've done, I could even cut new sprockets to change ration if I can't find one that matches what I want, and I'm less than half the price if I had bought the winch. Being that I already owned it, I'm less than 1/4 the price. For me, I look at it the same as I do everything, and have for many years. My labour's towards my own projects is free, and my therapy. It's my time to clear my head and design things that shouldn't exist. So if I can use scrap that's lying around, and save myself hundreds of dollars, I'm all over that, and I honesty hope it inspires other to try the same. I've got a video I'm starting to plan about recycling batteries for lead, to build my own.lead shot filled beater bag for body work. I'll probably be told I'm crazy by at least half of the people that know me. But having down my research, I know how to create what is essentially birdshot, and I'm going to break it down for everyone, because I'm broke, cheap, and love the challenge. 😎 And if any questions my sanity for that, I will say.....you're not wrong to.

@@kingofbootyfab Well, I am a Merchant Marine (chief engineer) and I have to admit that even industrial and marine parts become obsolete. They would rather sell you a new fire pump for $20K rather than an impeller, bearing, and seal kit for $2K. It's a scam. However, have you considered using 3-PH motors w/ VFDs? Admittedly you may have to use a reduction gear (to get the required torque) but you would also have variable speed control. Remember that electronic phase converters give you reduced HP output versus 3-PH power or rotary converters. I have a 375 Quincy powered by a Baldor 5HP/3-PH motor using an electronic phase converter and it works just fine. However, the duty cycle on a static unit is about 90% intermittent but only 70% continuous. A rotary converter is better but they cost about 5-times as much. For the price I could just get a good Baldor 1-PH.

I'll be honest. I understand part of that, but electrical is not my primary expertise by any means. Having said that though, I definitely looked into a lot of options, to be blunt at the end of the day, cost is king. I would much prefer a setup like you're talking about for simplicity and cleanliness, but the last year, it's kicked me pretty hard while I'm down. Between sick in the fall, herniating a disc in my back, and the wife's broken fibula and 8 screws to put it back together, we've had a combined almost 9 months off work, once I figured out I could assemble this whole thing for under $150, I didn't dig too deep. I'd bet in Canada the motor your taking about alone is 4X what I have into everything, and that's including my 20 foot long cord for it. I may swap it all out down the line for something better, quieter, stronger and more adjustable, or just simply cleaner, but building it the absolute cheapest way possible is the only way i was able to build anything for most of my life, so it's a real hard habit to break.
