OMG! After being a passionate (in a plant kinda way) gardener for 40+ years, I thought I knew how to plant a tree. I've always been told to "amend" the soil. But NO... for a mango, just plant in native sandy Florida soil. This old dog just learned a new trick! (I planted a Zill "Cotton Candy" mango earlier this week. Bought at ECHO in N Ft. Myers, FL)

Thanks for all the videos. I’ve learned a lot. Didn’t know there were so many different varieties. I’m in the Redland/Homestead area and we have lots of rock. And I mean it’s not just rocky but we have huge coral rock. I use a backhoe to make my holes and sometimes I feel like I’m carving into this rock and making a pot. I know people say put back what you take out when planting but it’s just rock w not dirt. What can I do in my case? I want to have all my holes done and have a plan before visiting and purchasing your trees.

I paid someone to plant my tree and it was stunted and died. I was soo sad about it. He never did any of this. I bought another mango tree and I'm gonna try this method, especially with what he did to the root ball. I got a rainbow eucalyptus planted and am trying to make sure to avoid it because it will kill anything that competes with water. Fingers crossed, I hope this one will grow. Thank you for this information.

Thank you for this video. I was doing it all wrong. I was wonder why my trees are dying? We have very alkaline soil in So cal. I correct that by adding sulfur to the soil while planting. I hope that doesn’t disturb the roots!

I think that planting with compost can/cannot be a problem, it depends on the situation and what ratio of soil/compost you use. I have 100% sand soil, Mediterranean climate (southwestern part of Portugal), very dry, almost no organic matter, usually I plant my trees doing a mix of 50% native soil and 50% compost (at the most) ensuring that in the future the soil doesn't settle. In Florida with all the rain that occurs during the hot part of the year, decomposition rations are very high so maybe in that situation planting with compost is a problem. Different situations require different solutions.

so mangos aren't that delicate about being root pruned if pot bound? I know avocados are highly sensitive and you don't want to mess around with the roots when you transplant. Anyways, I'm definitely adding this vid to my mango playlist.

Do mangos have invasive roots? I would love to plant some mangoes about 5-7' from the house. Or do they do well in containers? If so, how large of a container? I heard that a cactus mix is good for them. Thanks!

Hey Chris. I recently planted 8 mango grafts in my farm in India. Malgova, Alphonsa and a dwarf Thai variety. I generously mixed dried and composted cow manure along with the soil while planting. It's been two months and the malgova is doing great. The rest are healthy but slow. Har mentioned that the trees may die within 3 years. Do you think I better replant them after removing the fertilizer? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My manila mango grown from seed keep stopping their growth after about 3-4 months. I've re-potted using 30% sand, 30% peat moss, 30% perlite, and 10% mix of compost, composted manure, worm casting, and myccorhiza. They're getting 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. It's seems to be at a complete halt, and can't produce leaves. Any tips?? These baby's look like they're dying.

i'm tempted to just put it in the ground and see if it takes off but it doesn't seem healthy enough to transplant and I dont' want the shock to kill it... I just have to fight off the urge for another few weeks, by then I'll be too paranoid to do it during summer
@Justanotherhuman2
@Justanotherhuman2 3 года назад
How did you get rid of the anthracnose?
@zengrow3098
@zengrow3098 3 года назад
@@Justanotherhuman2 i used a copper spray for foliar and then a systemic that you apply with water and it rids it internally I can't remember the brand or type. Doesn't matter the tree is dead, turns out certain Florida rootstocks are prone to disease out here but some nurseries will just sell you a tree even though most likely it will die. Most people here in socal grow Manilla for the rootstock and then graft or do topwork. Some Florida cultivars will grow here but I haven't run across anyone who has a fruit punch unless it's in a large container or they completely filled a pit with the type of soil that it natively likes and grew it out. My manila is growing fine.

@7:35 there's a light colored root, maybe 1/8 inch diameter, that was growing along the pot wall for at least four inches. Why didn't you cut it off? You must have noticed it because you pruned around it. Were you afraid pruning it might shock the tree too much? Thank you, Har.

@PracticalPrimate
@PracticalPrimate 5 лет назад
I don’t know California but planting in compost is a bad idea. Even if the tree did like that (which it really won’t) the compost will decompose and the tree will sink in the end (leaving it too deep).
@agriperma
@agriperma 5 лет назад
What you use as root stock is important, in Fla, most grafting is done on top of a seedling variety named "turpentine" this does well in Florida's soil. but many that have shipped grafted trees to CA, have had problems with turpentine rootstock in their soils. I have read reports from growers that Manila does well in CA as a rootstock, I think some Fla nurseries offer an option for non-turpentine rootstock grafted trees. in any case if you buy from a local nursery, ask what they were grafted on.
