I bought the same clamps but I used a hacksaw to cut the end off. I never considered trying to slide it off while engaging the clutch. Thanks for the tip.

Oh for sure or file the end down a little...or do nothing to them I like I did lol. Thanks for the comment!

my clamps have a metal bump in the grooved side of the clamp that prevents the clamp from separating at the bottom, so I just filed it down with a regular Nicholson hand file. Also, it should be noted that you need to continually hold down the spring when you remove the screw end of the clamp, otherwise all the pieces will fall out. It's easy to put them back together, but the spring clamp is a good idea when converting these to dog clamps

Chris, this is a great tip. I will use it today when I get out to the shop and settle in to my 'work spot'. Thanks for posting this.

Hope you have some of the older ones. The newer clamps don’t do this. They ‘fixed’ them lol. I liked having that though. Came in handy it did. Thanks for watching 👊🏻👊🏻

@@CPBuilds Newer ones have a screw , remove the gray screw and you can do the same thing, you can also replace the head to the other end and make the clamp a spreader.

Yeah I don't own a dremel but I can see how that might come in handy for grinding that nub off. I always look at HF for this version and have had zero luck after finding the 9 I did back in March BUT....good luck in your search.
@clemmcguinness1087

just a thought ... if you popped the rivet out and then put a dollar store nut and bolt through the rivet hole once you'd attached the clamp to your bench, it would stop it falling out. think i'll do this myself!

Thanks for another useful video. I imagine you could use a drill or even a hand file to remove the rivet, or of course there is the option of picking up a used rotary tool (Dremel or similar) off Craigslist, which is how I got mine. :-)

Yessir. I honestly don't use these anymore lol....once you go BESSEY you never go back as the old saying goes but yes if you're on a budget and $2.99 a clamp works for you...then these are your best bet.

Chris what is the product number for the Bessey clamp you used on your last video with the dog holes?
@CPBuilds
@CPBuilds 6 лет назад
Those are the GTR16 and they are a little pricy ($39/a piece) BUT worth it. The screw version is the only $19ish at Home Depot and that's the GTR12.

You know...I don’t have these anymore so I can’t check for you. I’ve migrated to using the Bessey GTR16S6H when using my MFT. I wanna say I thought they did but they were a little tight but I don’t recall if I checked in a (3/4)” hole or a 20mm hole. Sorry.

Or you could use a toggle clamp. Also available at HF
@CPBuilds
@CPBuilds 5 лет назад
Do ppl realize that this video is to show you a hack with one of their clamps? Yes I know toggle clamps are available there but I really think ppl miss the point of this video. Like when ppl tell me that I could remove rust with WD-40 and the video was to show you how to remove rust with citric acid. Thanks for the comment.
@mcearl8073
@mcearl8073 5 лет назад
Blake William Ziegler combs This method would give a lot more range than toggle clamps would. Toggle clamps are great for certain purposes but they only have a small amount of adjustments so you’ll need to be clamping about the same thickness of stuff everytime give or take maybe an inch. Unless you hack them but then someone will comment on your video that you could just use a bar clamp available at harbor freight and grind the rivet off...

@CPBuilds
@CPBuilds 8 лет назад
How is that ruining a tool? Ruining a tool would imply that I wouldn't be able to use it I'd think. That is far from the truth with these clamps. I use the ones that come apart all the time and they work great. I mean you saw the "awesome demo" I did with these right? Not sure why you think they are ruined.

@CPBuilds

No worries. If it's any consolation, I was gonna play the MacGyver theme during this bit. Taking apart a clamp with a another clamp isn't the same as diffusing a bomb with a a paperclip...but I'm pretty sure I felt the same way he did. Take care.
