Whoa. Backlash over my 'mistreatment' of the employee- I did no such thing. Trust me, you had to be there. He was rude and insulting. It took him *minutes* as he loudly announced to everyone behind me in line that each of my coupons had expired. He then suggested multiple times for me to sign up for the e-mail service, and he even continued to press me on the phone-coupon app even after I told him that I just wanted to leave. I do not make it a point to diminish the position of other people; I treat everyone I meet as an individual. The kid was simply a jerk that was enjoying the small privilege of power that his job gives him. So get off my case.

I also filed down the edges of my cheap vise. You can really hurt your hands if you file or saw and bumb against the sharp edges.

The back edges of the jaws are great at skinning knuckles. I just closed the vise with nothing in the jaws and dressed the nonfunctioning edges with a flap disk.
@tankdirt
@tankdirt 5 лет назад
Good stuff. Also, I had a project needing outside pressure (spreading). Ground off the pins for the jaws and flipped them 180 degrees. Used a screw for the fixed jaw, didn't bother with replacing pin on other end .It won't provide the rigidity for heavy force, but still very handy.

For those that insist one direction when filing, how about hacksawing ? Surely that falls under the same rules :P :D I don't lift the file from the work most of the time, though i do lighten the pressure on the backstroke, lifting and dropping onto the work would surely do some damage
@KainYusanagi
@KainYusanagi 6 лет назад
You don't need to lift it entirely from the surface that you're working on, but you need to not apply pressure and basically just draw it along the edge to reset the file/blade edge location. It's also not about "tool fetishism", but just taking care of your tools properly, so that they don't recieve undue wear and tear and you don't need to replace them as often as you might otherwise, if you don't treat them right.

Love the tips! I have a small herd of these clamps in different lengths myself & will likely use many of them myself. =) One problem I've had with them is that the handles spin after a while when applying even a small amount of pressure. My local HF is pleasant about swapping them out, but I wish there were a solution so I wouldn't have to.

I was waiting in anticipation for you to use the clamp to clamp the clamp pads, and I wasn't disappointed. I've always thought that there should be a term for the special moment when one gets to use a tool in the process of fixing or making the tool itself. Something akin to recursion in mathematics or booting (boot-strapping) in computing.

Thank you for teaching the only effective way to make hot glue work on massive, conductive substrates. Hot glue can be absurdly strong when applied to a hot substrate -- but everyone just uses a tepid glue gun. It's no wonder that you see so many cases of it merely disbonding cleanly from things (e.g. in modern crappy cabinetry, etc) I also appreciate that you know whose casual obsessions are worth accurate description and low regard.

Dream Services International maaaaaaann... i tried the diresta two pieces of wood, and pop the glue off once i was done working the smaller piece. I dont know what i did right but whatever it was, i couldnt just break them apart after like jimmy does
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 6 лет назад
There are definitely differences in the operating temp of glue guns and the heat requirements of the glue sticks. For that matter, the density of the wood has plenty to do with it. Gluing on metal is another story.

I was going to mention the Harbor Fright coupon app but I see that road has already been traveled to a dead end. My big complaint about the myriads of coupons that one receives is that the expiration date is printed so small that it is difficult to easily see if it is still valid. The app keeps my car from being littered with coupon sheets and flyers. (and of course they are printed on such poor paper that tearing the coupons out neatly is a daunting task)

the coupon thing is a total scam. I probably would have just overridden it and gave you the coupon. ill tell you this, watch the prices on you favorite items jest before a sale, every time we have a sale, we raise about 40% of the prices in the store, and put them on sale for less than we raised them. Its a total scam.

pocket83² All my co-workers are really enthusiastic about their jobs. Some of them have been working it for years. It seems weird to me honestly. I feel like they got the job with 0 previous experience in “making” because they dont seem aware of the stigma their employer has. The customers are supremely annoying though. I once forgot to tell a customer that their drill didnt qualify for their “20% off one item” coupon and they payed full price for it. (4 dollars more than the discount would have given them). They marched back into the store demanding I give them their cash back. I called my manager for backup and they totally bent to the angry customer’s demands, Giving them the discount. I was stunned.

I have a bunch of HF clamps and they work well. But my new favorites are the Bessey clamps that I picked up recently. Waaaaay better quality and they cost about the same at a set of four for $15 at the orange depot.

@m3rdpwr
@m3rdpwr 6 лет назад
I bought a couple sets of four for under $10 each after Christmas at HomeDepot.. One thing I don't like about the Bessey version is the smaller wooden handles. Makes it harder to grip.
@cameronflack2254
@cameronflack2254 6 лет назад
I bought 4 of these recently, and 4 of the "quick grip" style. The quick grip (with the squeeze handle for final tightening) didnt work at all. 1 completely broke apart the first time i got it tight. The F clamps.... the motion was awful and 2 of the 4 cracked on the lower jaw as i was tightening them the first time. HF replaced them all for free but the newer ones arent better.
@poorcousinsdiy5672
@poorcousinsdiy5672 6 лет назад
I was able to fix my quick grip style by drilling out the plastic area where it had the bit that holds the handle in, you know the part that breaks under repetitive pressure. Then i used a spare bolt and nut to act as the fulcrum point for the lever/handle, works like new again. The handle is plastic, so i expect that it will just break again, but at least i've extended the useful life of it.

Amen brother. Customising the tools most used is a real gamechanger. Why be unkind to your hands when you could have tinkered with the tools slightly and save your hands from callouses, scuffs, cuts, and develop cramps and strain injuries. I'm a chainmail maker, so I burn through about a dozen pairs of pliers every year. Every one of 'em has the handles removed, then the bare metal pliers get bent into the right shape, foam wrapped (dollar store double sided foam tape, several layers), and lastly topped with a couple of layers of self-vulcanising tape on top for maximum grip and maximum padding. When they wear out, I just toss 'em in a bucket with a layer of wd40 misted on top. Full bucket goes to charity thrift market for some other soul to get some use out of 'em.
@pocket83squared
@pocket83squared 6 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your method. I may try it. You know, needle-nose pliers are probably the hand tool that I use more than anything else. I have dozens. It's just a great general tinkerer's tool. But I've tried so many grip methods, and I still haven't found a method I consider video-worthy. Do you have a favorite brand or style? My favorite so far is GRIP (Grand Rapids Industrial), which come from a discount warehouse near here for 2.99 a pair. Hard metal and a nice geometry. I've been sticking their cusions back on with epoxy, but that still doesn't last the life of the tool.

Return to the store with a non-expired coupon and receipt and ask to get the difference refunded. If they don't go for it (I just did it with their July 4th sale, for about $15 back into my pocket), go pick out the same items, purchase them (using coupon), then return for refund on the older receipt.

I would respectfully recommend cleaning the clamp’s rail first. There is probably debris from the construction process, paint, and oil to prevent rusting during its trip from the Pacific. Instead, use a cloth rag then use a wax or dry lubricant. Saw dust will be attracted to oils you’re using.

When I worked for harbor freight it was one of the most miserable experiences of my working life , the pay was awgul for the work they expected of us, the hours were extreme. We got 2 trucks a week and they expected us to be in at 3 am to recieve and work until sometimes 3 in the afternoon unpacking and loading shelves , and dont get me started about how it took them three months to even give me my first paycheck . They still owe me money but I said why bother I'll never see it . At some point I became so disgruntled I would keep a "master coupon" at my register and give it to every customer I helped even ones who were not members of the mailing list. A small act of rebellion but definitely one that gave me a monochrome of satisfaction in my hellish day to day. Long story short I would never reccomend anyone to work for that company so just understand that those working there may be already disgruntled and or pissed off when you get to them dont take it personally.

I suppose oil will do, but wax works well and is more pleasant. It can be frustrating when a coupon has expired, but there is not a lot to complain about with regard to HF coupons. They have a generous policy, and the poor guy behind the register probably doesn't have the authority to let you use an expired one. Expiration dates are printed on them.

Try not to be condescending to the minimum wage register workers for doing their jobs. It's not their fault that the coupons had expired, nor is it their fault that Harbor Freight plays the coupon game instead of lowering the prices on products. Not everybody is fortunate enough to make money doing something interesting, and some people follow guidelines seriously for whatever profession they happen to be in possession of.

I've worked in shitty retail jobs like that my whole life because I made mistakes and dropped out of college. I now manage a shitty retail job and make a couple bucks over minimum wage. The store owner and upper management still get on our collective asses for small things that affect our profitability. I, at least, appreciate when my employees follow the rules and not proceed with discounts that have expired. Should my employees be condescending to the customers? No. And in most cases if there was some small misunderstanding, I won't nickle and dime the customers either. It's still not the register worker's call to make, however, and neither he nor I have the power the change prices. That's up to people who make much more money than I do.

Tbh he SHOULDNT care about your problems, he's doing a more than adequate job making sure that you can buy the crappy parts and tools. There's nothing he can do to change it and a minimum wage employee that entangles them self with every problem their customers may have is subjecting themselves to far more stress than their job is worth. Being condescending is one thing but they're not here to break the company policies for you. Take up those kinds of problems with managers and store owners, that's what their higher wage is for.
