Harbor Freight Folding Trailer. This is my Harbor Freight folding trailer model number1720 heavy duty. This trailer is item # 62647 and has a 1,720LB rating. In this video I show you you my 10 trailer mods, (really 11), that I have made to my folding trailer over the past 4 years.
1️⃣🟢The first trailer modification that I made was the flooring. I used 5/8" OSB plywood for the floor. I put three coats of polyurethane on both sides for protection. I used 3/8' carriage bolts to attach my flooring.
2️⃣🟢My number 2 mod was to add waterproof trailer lights. I use my folding trailer for my boat so these were a must have!
3️⃣🟢Number 3 was to upgrade to a 7 blade trailer connector. The 5 pin connector that came with my trailer was not compatible with my 2015 F-150.
4️⃣🟢Number 4 is the custom side rail system that I made. Every utility trailer needs to have a side rail system to strap down various cargo. These rails are made from 2x3's and I used 3/8' bolts with neoprene nuts to build the rails
5️⃣🟢Number 5 was to add a 1,000LB swivel jack. Every trailer needs a trailer jack with a wheel to move it around when its not connected to a vehicle. These trailer jacks are not expensive.
6️⃣🟢My number 6 mod was to ditch the 12" wheels and tires and convert to 13" Carlisle Radial Trail HD trailer tires. 13" rims are easy to find and very inexpensive. Having taller 13" wheels that are rated for 80 MPH instead of 55 is pretty awesome! I used 5mm spacers behind my wheels to keep the tires away from the trailer.
7️⃣🟢My spare tire mounting system allows me to store my spare tire for my folding trailer underneath the trailer tongue. This is convenient both on the road and while the trailer is folded up in storage. I also mounted a four-way lug wrench and bottle jack underneath the trailer floor so that I am always prepared!
8️⃣🟢This modification is arguably the best and most important of all of my mods. The Harbor Freight Folding Trailers FOLDS!!!! Once these trailers fold in half there is no built in mechanism to hold them together. No latch... I made an awesome latching system that safely holds the two halves of the trailer together while in storage and cleverly stows out of the way when the trailer is in use.
9️⃣🟢This simple little mod keeps my license plate out of the way when the trailer is folded up so that I can push it against the wall and the hinge lets the license plate drop back into position when the trailer is on the road. The first time my license place cut my arm is when I took a grinder to the bracket and made this mod!
9️⃣1/2🟢The cheesy plastic caster wheels that came with this trailer fell apart a few weeks after I stored my trailer for the first time. I fought with them for two seasons before I upgraded to the cast iron wheels that are on it now. So worth it!
🔟🟢Upgrading the wheel bearings on this trailer should be a priority for anyone who owns one. I removed and re-packed my bearings on a regular basis because I use my trailer for my boat. Even though I used quality marine grease and re-packed at the end of each season, after four years my OEM bearings were worn out. They are not a quality bearing to begin with.

I had the HF trailer as well. I used 3/4 plywood. I primed it and painted it with oil based primer and paint on all sides before bolting it down, with relief cuts near the hinges. I installed the jack as well. My sides were like yours but I used deck screws and a washer to bolt them to the metal flanges. I used a bungee cord to hold the two sides together. I opted to leave the license plate fixed, so I would cut myself every time I walked by it. Good video

That’s funny (not funny)! I have a license plate scar or two myself. The first year I had this trailer I backed into a tree camping and bent the license plate bracket so bad that on the way home it broke off in the corner and I dragged it for a mile or so. I welded it back together and after a few more mishaps I came up the folding solution. Thanks for watching!

Really like your side rails. They keep the bed at a true 4 x 8 size so one can haul 4 x 8 panels. Someone somewhere used Mdf for side panels cut to fit in the stake pockets and added ripped 2 x 4's for reinforcement for the Mdf.

Great mods, and I've done a bunch myself on my 1750 lb version, including putting in a recessed wheel chock in the front half for my motorcycle. I also put 4" x 4" E-Track mounts on the deck (3 down each side for a total of 6). And speaking of the deck, that's the one weakness I saw on this build. I would avoid the 'engineered' particle plywood and go with ACX roofing plywood, and treat that with Copper Green, primer, then paint with a high-grade exterior paint and mix-in some non-slip paint additive. The side rails seem to be a little on the weak side for most trailer applications, especially if hauling heavier loads. I'm designing some for my trailer and will be using 2x6" redwood, with steel locking brackets on the front, and steel gate latches in the rear. I didn't bother cutting bolts to secure the side rails, and purchased two packages (5 ea. for a total of 10) pre-drilled 3/8" pins for the stake-bed rails and will use the cotter-pins and washers too (and secure those with small wire cables so they don't get lost/stolen). I will mount the spare to the front rail using the spare tire mount from HF, and am designing something to secure the ramp I purchased. Adding a 1"x1"x 4' 90deg aluminum edge to the rear will keep the plywood from being damaged when loading/unloading. Instead of welding a latch to hold the trailer folded, I put eye-hooks on the corners and use d-rings or carabiners to hold it together while folded upright for storage. I put grounds on at all the side-marker lights and other places since that seems to be one of the weak links on these trailers. Using wire looms on all the wiring, then securing them to various parts of the undercarriage secures everything neatly and protects the wiring from the elements. As for the bearings, I've had good luck with them in past, but this time I took out the old (blue) grease they come with, and re-packed with high-grade wheel bearing grease. Of course I added the trailer jack and upgraded the 'cheapy' casters to slightly bigger ones to make it easier to roll around over rough surfaces. I gave it some thought about the bigger tires, but will look at that for a future upgrade. Anyways, well done.

I built a teardrop trailer on one of these. I have over 24000 miles on it. I was thinking of upgrading to 13" wheels as the HF ones don't last very long; but I was concerned I would need to modify the fenders or buy expensive spacers. thanks for the links to parts that will work.

I LOVE your onboard tools! That said I would include a more positive lock or holder for each item, and not count on only those spring clips to keep their grip under all circumstances. Would hate to have a 4-way launch from beneath the vehicle right in front of me one day! I've had my HF foldable since about 2003 and have put it through literal tons of work. Once had 8 Volvo engines at a time on the thing! Also loads of cement bags and cinder blocks. The last couple weeks I've been doing a bunch of mods I've long wanted. One is smaller lights in welded frames, because I've gone through half a dozen sets of regular bolt on stock trailer lights. They always BREAK around the mounting bolts, not even counting the times I munted them on an obstacle or while dumping. I upgraded to LED side lights years ago and put an amber clearance light on the tongue by the hitch so aggressive drivers thinking of dipping in behind you get a clear visual sign that there's a trailer behind. For the license plate which has gotten bent dozens of times over the years, I ended up making a solid frame on the caster mount, so the plate is "staring at the ground" when the trailer is folded up and stowed. I considered mounting near the original location using hinges or chains so it could move instead of bend/break, but every way I tried to configure this was more work and less safe for the plate in use, plus it would dangle into the way when stowed. Mounting on the caster mount bar solved so many problems without presenting any new ones. Recessed a light up under the frame rails to shine on the whole plate but not out at other drivers' eyes, without any fancy shrouding. I upgraded to 13" trailer radials and need to get deep dish wheels, I have too little clearance to the frame and sides and one tire chafes badly when loaded. I also upgraded the bearings, seals, and grease very early in the trailer's life. For hardware to connect the sides, search "stake side hardware." I have 2 kinds, 1 passively mates into the other when installed in the correct order which I have on the back of the dump trailer, the other kind manually latches and unlatches much like a gate lock, and any side can be removed in any order, for the lower/heavier open set of sides that are as likely to be used for un/loading from the side as the rear. Very evolved designs and heavy duty, they mate together smoothly and hold firm in the directions sides try to move relative to each other while in motion.

OSB is for interior use friend. Any defect, or edge, is going to swell 15% and have no structural rigidity. Ideally marine grade or even fiberglass clad. As for the thickness problem - that's where your welding expertise comes into play. That rail fence looks cheap but the cost is over the top, especially when time counts. Next time I'm going to use scrap thin wall tube. There's got to be a better way. GREAT INFO But it makes more sense to buy an upgraded DIY TRAILER KIT - maybe. Gonna look for one.

Kinda sells me on getting one...or getting a better one with some of the upgrades already done for me...

I’d like to know how much it cost to do the upgrades. I remember seeing a deal on a better utility trailer from Home Depot for like $1,000 and I got it because of the money and time savings. It’s worked out well. It already had a beefier axle, wheels, bearings and deck.

Please describe step by step(if possible) adding the flooring. Looking at my trailor...did you just lay the board ON TOP of the existing bolts and THEN add bolts to secure the floor? If so, did laying the floor on top of the existying bolts create issues?
@MrFredsDIY
@MrFredsDIY Год назад
First, thanks for checking out the video! I did place the flooring over top of the frame bolts however, I used a Forster drill bit the size if the bolt heads to give relief to the flooring so it would lay flat. I also made sure that my trailer was square before I tightened everything down. Good luck with your project.!

I like the idea of the tire increase. Where did you find them? I'm thinking of either getting them or just adding another axle of the same size to increase the load rating

Nice trailer mods. I noticed that you have a vegas license plate, I’m also in vegas and been searching for diy enclosed builds. The trailer I have now is to small and not to the standards I like it to be.

One thing I hate is the location of the vertical bolts that you install when setting up the trailer. I made a wedge from 2 x 4 that fits in the frame channel and holds the bolt in place while being tightened. Cut down my time fiddling with them to about 1 minute per side.

Great video. I will be buying one of these trailers and doing your same mods, especially the wheel bearing. Question. I plan to use the trailer to tow my small side by side UTV. Do you think I can make the workable area 52”x 8ft instead of 4x8?
@MrFredsDIY

I’m not sure of your tire span. The actual plywood dimensions are 4ft x 8ft. Thanks for watching!

I used diamond plate for the deck. Lighter than plywood and won't rot.

Wow really great ideas and well presented. How much you reckon all these mod costs? Wonder if it just makes sense to buy a better quality trailer that would come with these kinds of creature comforts built in

Thanks for the comments. It’s hard to find a folding trailer with upgrades. The 13” wheels are the real gem of these mods. With a better ride, a closer match to my truck and much faster highway speeds all for under $200.

Since you upgraded to 13" rom & tires did you have to change fenders for everything to fit? Thanks.
@MrFredsDIY
@MrFredsDIY 4 месяца назад
I kept the same fenders, but I did have to adjust the brackets slightly by bending them to be more upright and not slanting out. I also used wheel spacers.

Nice video thanks. Does anyone know why these are not sold in certain states? They don't sell them here in PA. Just wondering if it doesn't meet some sort of Pennsylvania DOT requirement?

Your F150 I promise has that 4-pin light connector. It's the bottom of the two. I've had 3 F150s over the last 10 years and all of them have had that connector.

How’s the trailer jack look on yours? I put one on mine and putting any load on it flexes and twists the frame.
@MrFredsDIY
@MrFredsDIY Год назад
Thanks for watching the video! My framework flex’s as well . It’s because the hitch frame is not a solid “A”. It’s attached to the trailer with the hinging pins so the entire thing flexes.

Hey boss man, great video, I actually have a folding harbor freight 4 x 8 trailer but it has four lug wheels. I found a suitable upgrade, I think, at tractor supply company it’s a 13 inch 5.30 already mounted on the floor log rim I believe these are 13 inch. For around town the factory wheels that the trailer came with are probably fine but I have a road trip coming up where I’ll be traveling about 150 miles round-trip at highway speed probably around 65 mph average and I’ll be towing a dirtbike and ATV so I will be well within the towing capacity since the bike is only 200 pounds and the ATV is 375. I actually located these Carlisle tires at Walmart as well. Just wanted to see if they offer a four lug wheel if not, I’m probably gonna go with the tractor supply set up any other pointers would be appreciated. Thanks brother.

The TSC option might work out well but I’ve never tried it. Check the price of the 5 lug trailer from HF. It might only be a few hundred bucks more than the axle upgrade? Thanks for checking out the video!

How tight do you turn the bolts? There are no torque specs anywhere except for the wheel itself...some of sheet metal bends with no force at all like the two 19mm that holds the leaf springs on....also the u-bolt spring plate bends quite easily when torquing down....any advice?
@MrFredsDIY

Thanks for watching. I had similar frustrations when I put this trailer together originally. After I put the springs and axle together I checked and rechecked the bolts after a few times after a road trip or two.

Hi Fred. I just bought this trailer however it came with 4 lug 4.80/12" Carlile Radial Trail LH tires. Do you know if I can get a 13" radial for a 4 lug wheel? I've heard of people welding the frame at critical points as well to give a more sturdy frame. I'm starting to build a tear drop camper on the trailer but would like to drive faster than 55mph. Thanks for the video!
@MrFredsDIY
@MrFredsDIY 2 года назад
I’ve heard of folks welding the hinges. A weld could be places along the frame where the rear deck nests as well. If you figure out the bolt pattern for the 4 lugs you can see if a 13” rim is available in a 4 lug. You can take the trailer to Discount Tire or equivalent and have them tell you the bolts pattern as well as quote a price for 13’ rims. In the end you would have the information you need and could buy rims on the internet. Thanks for watching!

Do you remove the 6 screws every time you fold up the trailer. We are looking for an easier way to fold it without having to put the frame screws back in each time.

I only use two of those carriage bolts, the two that face the side and go through the side rail of the trailer and the upright edge of the hanger spring rail. (This bolt is easily accessible between the tire and the caster bracket) I keep a 17 mm socket handy for this.

Hey I have another question! Do you know of any tires or wheels that I could put on my trailer that would allow me to go 80-85 mph? The speed limits where I live are a bit higher. Or is 70 the max?

My Carlisle Radials say 81mph on them. The link is in the description.

Hi there really liked the video I’m thinking of buying this little trailer too for my 12 ft v hull aluminum boat too , how do you secure it down to the trailer?? Thank you ‘
@MrFredsDIY

You would need to build carpeted “bunk boards” to cradle the hull. Perhaps you could investigate HF boat trailers as well!
