On this episode I review my Harbor Freight radius roll bender and some of the SWAG Off Road upgrade options. Hope you dig it.
Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I am a automotive fabricator that produces Custom Automotive Fabrication content of all kinds. Including Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
I have built several Chevy trucks. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I recently sold to a friend named the Black Pearl.
I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horsepower mark to the tires on this particular build.
Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.

That slag in the wheel would drive me nuts. Drill a small hole in it and fill it full of foam expanding spray 😉

You dont always have to buy the expensive stuff, when i started golfing i didn't go straight out and by pings or Taylormade's i got the cheap Sports authority stuff to learn on. And they lasted me for years. But that jingle in the wheel would drive me nuts, lol. I would drill a small hole and spray some expanding foam in there to maybe stop that.

Nice video FAB. You mentioned wasted tube. Here a great mod you can do to reduce your waste for this type of bender. You will need a lathe to make these. (CRS is cheap) This is basically a steel plug that is inserted into each end of the tube your working. Can't post a picture here, so I'll try to explain how I made mine. There are 3 different diameters, one piece, two plugs needed, 1 for each of tube. *1st diameter is the ID of your tube, that will fit inside, no more the 2-1/2" length (inserted.) * 2nd diameter next in line, is the same size as your OD of tube. This length should be approximately 4"-5" (This length depend on YOUR bender) *3nd diameter is next in line, make this diameter, 1 1/2" to 2" bigger the your OD of your tube, at least 1" thick. (length) You can also weld this diameter to the end. Save on material. Now, with the plugs installed, you can use this "extra length" to roll your tube all the way to the end of your tube. This biggest diameter will help you remove the plugs when your finished with your bend. (AKA hammer) These are a little on the heavy side, so I drilled a 1" hole thru each plug to reduce weight. (1- 1/2 tubing set) Put a little grease on the inserted part before using. Now you have VERY LITTLE waste!

How big of a circle can you bend with that thing can you bend a 36-in circle or a 48-in circle

Used that same setup with the swag's add on plus the bottle jack setup rolling 1-3/4" Dom tubing for several side by side roll cages. Worked very well for them, I bought a universal digital read out scale and mounted that up to be able to make repeatable rolls as I had a jig set up for making roll cages.

When doing those and you need to add more radius is it the same as a traditional bender where when you put it back in you level your tube to the die? Or on these does it fall back in where it was?

Hey Kyle I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and you’ve inspired me to build my own car ,My idea is a Sports car I’ve done everything with a tube bender when you have to pup the Jack to get the bends so it was a bit of a workout but I’ve got everything done so far ,Love your videos keep up the good work ,Peace from Poland 💪🏻

Not sure if it was mentioned but to get rid of that chunk of whatever in the wheel, you can drill a small hole in the wheel, squirt a whole bunch of caulk in there and that piece of whatever will get stuck to it. Let it dry and no more rattle.

Just finished using that tool to bend an ark in 1.5x.095 DOM to match the curvature of a Datsun 260Z windshield. Friend I borrowed mine from just used two 1/4 inch plates bolted to the frame with holes for the axles at drilled at various spacing. There was a brace running from the plate he added to the top of the frame for rigidity. Worked great. I like the bottle jack idea. We talked about the lock screw problem and decided the thing that would be best is cutting a key way in the shaft and the wheel but a bolt or pin like you have looks like it's working ok. Great tool for the money.

I used a gantry crane winch and a k24 cam and crank gears with the chain to power the fkr. A plow disk as a base, 3 inch chan and some cam follower bearings to hold it all aligned. Tensioning the chain, a couple heims and schwaged tube. Works great, no workout neccessary.

i bought one and had a buddy make me some dies that allowed me to roll flat stock on it's edge. I had to do the same thing and punch holes thru the die, shaft and wheel. Awesome work as always bro!

The swag upgrades are a game changer. I got the electric pipe threader upgrade as well. I will admit, that one for me was completely unnecessary but I already had the threader. It is awesome!

Helpful tip to avoid going insane, drill a small hole on inside of wheel and spray foam to trap the slag.

Drill a small hole in the outside of the wheel, rotate it to the bottom and just drop the slag out.

Wow, nice welding table you have there :) I did the set screw thing too cuz it failed in the same way yours did. All I did was deepen the set hole to like 1/4 inch and used hex screws instead of the crappy plugs they give you. That has worked well. I also use a huge impact gun to tighten the top socket and that has made the thick wall stuff happen. The Swag wings makes it happen easier though for sure.

You need to get the pipe threader attachment so you don't have to crank this thing by hand. I had the same setup 5 yo when I bent 1" square tube railings for my house. You will get tired real quick after bending one piece of steel (and blisters). The motorized pipe threader is the best addition ever to this tool.

Bear in mind the four little screws holding the forcing screw plate. Shear point on those can't be very much. I have one, welded to a roll around table. It let me roll some large rings that my ceiling didn't permit, outside.

if you want to get rid of the slag noise. Drill 1/4 inch hole on each side, Maybe the slag will fall out, If not, fill it with expanding foam from a can.

Hey Kyle, I don't want to come across as rude but with the new shop you should really look into a Lav Mic. The Rode Wireless GO is a heck of a value. As good as your content is and as large as your channel has gotten, I think you would really be happy with upgrading your audio just a bit. There is just a ton of echo and reverb in the massive shop. Great video though!!

Very nice, that rattle in the roller wheel, if you drill a small hole in the inside and put some spray foam in it that will stop it and when it expands through the hole trim it off . Spray it with a bit of black paint your won't know

If that treaded bolt is 5/8" or 1", I don't know.. you can get a weight jack nut from speedway and weld it to the top of the frame for more stability

Rather than modifying what you have already bought. I'd go down to the local laser cutting place and get them to cut new pieces with the extensions already part of the sides, probably work out same or cheaper. But instead of getting them to put holes in the bottom piece I would redesign the whole thing so the worm gear sat horizontally for infinite adjustment and use the bottle jack on the top.

You can buy or make a brake line tubing straightener very inexpensively. Look it up. Some sort of brake line straightener IS a must have.

I think the wheel will give more control. I need one of these. I see a JD2 in my future and while I could enjoy it I don’t need it right now. Or the cost! But this is way less money than steel tube flares for the CJ fenders on my YJ. And then I’ll have a tubing roller left over :) (benders can’t do a big radius)

LOL, "Guess, I gotta listen to that, forever". Yeah man. Hey, you could drill a hole and squirt in some epoxy, roll hole to the top, hopefully slag rolls to the bottom and cures. Maybe even great stuff. Hey I got a cherry picker where half the holes needed egging out just to bolt it up. Was worth it in the end.

I wouldn't use a pipe-threader on the shaft if I was going to motorize it. I'd put a small rubber wheel on a washing-machine motor and have it engage the big wheel. The big wheel looks rather smooth so maybe rough it up a little so it grips better. The ratio between the two wheels should provide more than enough torque. Control the motor with foot pedals so your hands are free to make other adjustments during the process.

So if you need to bend a full circle, how do you remove it from the press? it looks like the circle is gonna be trapped inside unless you take the machine apart.

Full circles are hard but you can either make them in two halves or roll them offset like a spring and then cut and bend to line up.

Weld a nut on the end of the hand wheel shaft and use a cordless impact driver to spin the wheel back and forth. Much less arm work and faster.

Do you know offhand how tight of a radius you could get on a 1-in tube? I've got sailboat and I need to bend some 1-in stainless tube for a solar arch. I need to get some tight radiuses though and I'm not sure if this machine has that capability.

I don't think swapping those washers around achieved anything accept for adding more load on the die. That thin washer is a hardened shim, you added the spacer mild steel washer from the outside to the inside. You didn't actually take any flex out, not until you take up the space between the 'R' clips and the outer face of the bender where you swapped washer from originally. Hope you take this comment constructively and not negatively. Like watchin' your stuff, keep at it.

markham1109, it's not a flex issue it's a twisting issue, if they're misaligned you'll get a corkscrew affect. And those are called hairpins.

Now that you have it, you'll find more and more "reasons" to use it. Every time i get some new tool, that is supposed to have a distinct use, I keep trying to find new ways, and reasons to make it more useful. I'm pretty sure you'll do the same !
