SOFT BEAD FIX/TIP!! you guys were mentioning the downfall of soft beads not sinking as fast or being to buoyant. To eliminate this what I use is the smallest split shot I can find or fit on my leader (thinner leader=smaller shot you can crimp) and use that as the "peg" for soft beads. I'll crimp a small shot just tight enough where I can slide it if I need, then slip the soft egg over that split shot and bury it in the middle of the soft egg. The shot becomes invisible, doesnt affect the eggs look, however the shot gives the soft bead something to hold on as well as allowing it to sink faster.
I'm definitely going to try this. Thanks Ashton Cz. I'll use it in faster water where the strong current can mask the drag of even the smallest tin B split shot. If I hook trout I'll be a hero. If I don't I'll blame you. HaHa! Tight lines.
Mine starts out soft.. but gets hard when a steelhead bites. 😂 50/50 combo. Hard bead pegged up top and a soft bead just above the hook for that natural feel when they hit and as you guys said the soft one won’t affect the hook. 🤘🎣
I have to second the lower two comments, A short segment on pegging beads with your little glass bead , (how to tie the glass bead) would be awesome to know.
I fish both. For me I fish I river that usually this time of year has a lot of wind. Hard beads if it’s windy. If not I fish soft. But I think also a factor that nobody talks about is how much lead your fishing. Great video, love you guys.
expense is a factor for me and hard beads are much less expensive. So, a small selection of soft, lots of hard and tie glo bugs as a third option. Love em all
I just caught my first fish on soft beads last week. I haven't fished beads a whole lot but have had good success in clear water conditions with doubled up 8mil...contrasting colors
Thanks guys , great tutorial .. I run both soft and hard at different times . Kinda like you guys do .. Another way to help keep the bead stop from sliding down is to tie a small knot below the bead stop … it’s not perfect but definitely helps it stay up … As long as you use a good fluorocarbon like Seagur a knot won’t weaken the line .. never had one break yet .. from 8/lb on up .. I’d like to see a tutorial on drift fishing the big 20 , 25 and 32 mm soft bead for Kings … that’s what I’ve been trying with no luck on the mid to lower Sac , but this year is super tough due to the drought conditions .. The places I can fish don’t hold fish , they move thru quickly to the colder water further up river .. it boils down to a lot of luck and if I didn’t have Bad luck I’d have No luck at all .. THANKS GUYS
Just came up on my feed...I was basically mouthing what you guys were saying. You really covered the exact reason why I push the Soft Plastics here in the shop over everything else. The 3 key points, Ease of changing color and Size, Fish definitely hang onto them longer and finally the pivot point is a huge factor. Hard beads work as a shim to push fish off. The squishiness of the soft plastic allow for there to be more play near the hook keeping the fish on during the fight. There isnt much that I see on the Net that I agree with but you knocked it outta the park. Tight lines boys!
The hard flourescent ones seem to attract a lot of fish. I love a pink pearl corkie though. Held with a toothpick end. Either one, gott have some yarn in the loop!
I emailed BnR the other day because I was confused about the video on their website that said that the beads could be changed over the hook while you're on the water and how that was supposed to work with the t-stop. I gathered after that conversation that changing the bead over the hook with the t-stop isn't possible so I'm not sure why their video was about. One of the packages of beads that I bought didn't have the t-stops enclosed but had bobber stops and sequins inside. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure that whoever I emailed at BnR said that they were doing away with the t-stops. I sent a follow-up email to get more clarification and never heard back. Also, in this video, you guys sounded like you were going to explain how to use the glass bead but you never got to it. I'd like to see how you rig those maybe in a supplemental video.
I have the t stop u can change your bead without passing thrue the hook , i use 3 feet leader with the t stop and the hook to change cut the leader on top take bead out put a new one , then u can adjust your float
Jordan how do you feel about wrapping your leader threw the bead twice to lock it in place .koehl Eric and I have been doing it for year .it never seems to be a issue especially when I'm comfortable use a heavier leader .15 lb UG or some thing .what do you think. I can remember ever losing a fish to line breakage and know I've landed dozens using this method. Thank you guys keep it up!!
Soft or hard, from experiance I think it really doesn't matter. I feel like a soft bead is more convenient, it's way more easy to switch out like Nick said. Let's be honest too during peak season with heavy competition you always want to be fishing and less time you have to switch out set ups to switch a color can become a nightmare and end result less fish on in your day.
Nice info. Great opinions on which bead suits the fisherman. Just starting to learn how to fish with soft beads. Don’t have much experience or confidence in them yet, but the more I try, I’m sure they’ll produce.
Pulling a light colored soft bead over the bead stop results in a blood dot egg pattern. Try pulling a yellow or green translucent soft bead over a red stopper and you have a blood dot option however this technique does degrade over time.
I just got into beads. Not sure which is my favorite. A lot of the hard beads have amazing shine so I can't wait to fish them this winter. But the soft ones move in the water real well. Maybe I'll dog the soft and just float the hard 🤷
I liked this super informative video thanks for it. You guys maybe throw in one or two top down cameras? You have huge trays of beads but couldn't see the size or colors you are showing. Keep up the good work!!!
I have issues using the t stops and I’m sure everyone does. The beads slide over them if you hang up and it’s hard to get the bead back up over the t stop. Sometimes the bead ends up down on the hook and the t stop just stays where it was lol. Need a bigger size base on them or a harder material. OR glass bead trick with a sequin below the bead, I don’t like the t stops on beads over 12mm 😔
Hey Guys - This is excellent content! Just curious about the ‘hybrid’ bead that you mentioned - are there beads/eggs with the features of both hard & soft that you use and recommend?
Def gonna grab some of those tsops. Never used soft beeds before and thanks guys for showin and talking about the softs.. Think I mite switch to the soft rig with the tstops bc of being able to switch colors at anytime, sold lol
Centering pin twist lock for larger diameter soft beads, only problem is, most of the time they inhale it and causes damage to fish. 🥴. But hook up ratio is great.
I'm too old school I guess, but you can't paint a soft bead. I like my old colors. But the colors you can buy now are pretty impressive. I guess I should keep up w/the times...
I think it depends on water condition, your buget because soft beeds are definitely more expensive and how comfortable you are using that particular product. Go with what you know and don't be afraid to experiment...that said don't break your wallet doing it. Thats my take
when making leaders for drifting lead . would you be better to put on the snap swivel on it or not when taking it off the leader roll or just have the snap swivel attached to the lead your going to use .
Under the glass bead, Ashley stopper knot? (Oysterman's knot). Could you tie just a 4 turn overhand knot & draw it tight? Tryin to figure out a knot that yields 100 % line strength - couldnt find the answer to that for the ashley stopper. Also saw a guy slip an xtra sm transparent bobber stop up into his threaded soft egg from below - invisible. Pretty clever I thought.
I wish I could use soft beads but they keep sliding off the stops and I miss the fish. They even sent me new and different stops and it didn't help. Does the glass bead work to keep the soft bead from sliding?
Hey guys. I'm from Ontario, and I use soft eggs. I personally have never seen the hard beads. I just put the soft egg on a # 12 egg hook. Just like a single egg yarn fly. I'm wondering the reason that you run your single egg presentation two inches or so above a bare hook. Thanks Henry Schmidt
I think it's to achieve a better hook set, it'll hook in the outside corner of the jaw. (Always wondered if this could be considered flossing by wardens.)
Can anybody tell me how to rig the soft bead rig cause every time I use soft bead the big trout end up swallowing the soft beads, does this also happen with the hard beads? Thanks. Soft beads should be out of the fly fishing industry. Thanks😢
I have a few different blacklights and the only uv beads I've tried are the spirit beads. They do not charge with a blacklight. I tried it on other lures in my box that are uv coated and they light up fine. Are there any uv beads that you know of that hold a charge?
Thanks for the informative video! Was that a standard knot above the glass bead tied into your leader? If so, does that compromise the leader strength any?
bNr tackle is who makes those. But the beads slide over them if you hang up and it’s hard to get the bead back on top of them.. just use a bobber stop or the glass bead
so are rubber eggs a soft bead?? I use Jensen egg thats a soft egg .and what about double threading the tag in to the egg instead of a peg>??? and what about spawn sacs??anyone ever use those in the Northwest???
If the egg is easily compressed down when squeezing it, then that's a soft bead, if not, it's a hard bead (hard rubber that's not easy to press down= hard bead). Double threading the bead still requires a peg in most circumstances because it will still slide in faster currents with just the line double threaded. I use to double thread my beads, but after having lost too many over a short period of time, I've come to realize that it's putting too much un-needed stress on my line that causes my leaders to break off too easy. So in my opinion, I wouldn't double thread.. especially in faster moving water and if you're using leaders that are 10lb test or under. Finally, yes, we use spawn sacs in the Northwest. Very effective when permitted on certain river systems.
Hard bead fishermen, something else to look at is the definition of bait. I dont know about other states but Oregon definition of bait lists molded soft plastic or rubber imitations of worms, eggs, etc but nothing is said about hard beads and I've never had issues with officers while fishing hard beads during no bait seasons.
Leave the door open to Hard and Soft Beads gives you plenty of Options! and I'm sure once "They" master colors needed for a soft bead it will probably become King.
