I have been holding my rod with my right hand while using a right handed baitcaster ever since I can remember and switching hands has never been an issue. Just natural for me. I have found that I can't use a left handed reel because I have no control over it. When fighting a fish it seems to wobble in my hand.

Awesome video. An additional option to enhance the bead presentation is to add a tuft of yarn, scented or not, to the egg loop, or hang a row sac off of the hook. Got my first steelhead on that one. With the bead this gives an additional option and provides a touch of scent of its own..

Is recommend using larger size braid (40-50lb) for float fishing. It will float better, because it's thicker. This creates less drag on bobber and makes mending line much easier. 40-50lb Power Pro braid will still cast fine since it's about same diameter as 10-12 lb. Mono. Hi vis braid also makes line management much easier. You need to be able to see where your line is to mend line and keep a drag free drift.

Awesome video for setup and FINALLY you are using a left handed reel. :P You should learn how to tie an FG knot, mainline (braid) to a section of fluro (10-15-20 foot section) to the weight/ swivel and the leader/ hook. Knot goes through the guides smoothly and if you do break off you can have a pre-tied float as a backup and retied in a few minutes.

I think I'm gonna have to leave those for everyone to try out because it's kind of individual's preferences. Personally I have had success with 12 and 14mm. For line I highly recommend 40 pound braid since you can guarantee you leader breaks so you don’t lose your bobber and if you get it in a colour like yellow it is highly visible making line management much easier
@skylazart
@skylazart Год назад
I like thicker line as well as it’s easier to manipulate and see on the water as well. A caveat is the size of your reel and of course, how much pressure it’s set on the drag so you won’t break your rod. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 💭

Hey Rod, I tried these before watching this video after they were suggested at the Harbour Chandler store in Nanaimo, the setup I m ade was almost identical to yours the only difference the 35 gr float! I was at the Somass first light this Sunday and tried these non stop from 6.30 am to about 1.30 pm, different spots and a lot of casts, I managed to get a small coho but nothing else, fish wouldnt even have a look at it, and they were there lol! I also tried putting scent on them but nothing. I really wouldnt want to get discouraged from this method as I really liked the aesthetic aspect of it as you also mentioned, so what would you think was the reason for no bites?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
Defects! 😆 Actually, I was hoping to test these beads out on the Somass this month but I've committed to too many projects as usual. It should work, but sometimes one particular presentation just doesn't work on some days. I've also heard from others that the bites were hard to come by last weekend at Somass, so it could just be the fish that day...

Great vid rod. Do you think that there is a difference between a baitcaster and centerpin reel and does it make a difference in the drift and do the fish care manly coho, chinook and steelhead
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
Pros and cons for each for sure. A good centerpin reel like the Islander Srteelheader provides a smoother drift, where as baitcasters don't really produce the same free spooling advantage, there is always a sight resistance. Baitcasters on the other hand, are way more efficient due to the high gear ratio. This means you can cover waters more effectively.
@Seb516
@Seb516 Год назад
What is a good beginner centerpin set up in your opinion that will last a while
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
For for a rod, you could just get a cheaper model like a Shimano Clarus, or even look on FB Marketplace to see if there are some old models for sale (Shimano Convergence). For the reel, my advice is to jump in and invest on a good one right away. Cheaper ones simply don't spin well, and can break after awhile. Islander Steelheader is no cheap, but it's pretty much bomb proof. If taken care of, their resell value is pretty high if you end up not wanting to fish with a pin setup.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
Pretty much the same as if I’m using roe, but maybe a bit shallower. I find the density of these soft beads is a bit higher than the hard beads, so they don’t suspend as much which is great. This means less swaying of the leader when being drifted. I like mine to be suspending a foot off the bottom. Fish don’t seem to have a problem chasing them down. There really aren't too many rods which can cover both species because of the size differences. Try to find a spinning rod that's rated 4 to 10lb, or 6 to 10lb. Those are good rods for coho and pink salmon, and still not too heavy for trout.

Why exactly they turn certain colours I don’t know, but I’m sure there is an evolutionary process behind it so they could adapt to whatever environment they need to survive in.

Why do you tie a egg loop knot while using beads?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
For a couple of reasons. This is the knot I prefer than one that ties directly to the eye of the hook. I like to have the leader going straight through the eye so the hook would hang straight. Also if I choose to add some bait to the hook, that option is still available.

have been seeing more soft beads on the market the last few years but haven't tried them yet. Interesting bobber stop style retainer/peg thing. it would be crazy using a 30mm hard bead, like a small egg of solid plastic. Some areas also regulate the max distance from the hook. Here, you need to stay under 2" from the hook to be legal.

i have a technical problem: Since salmons during run don't feed, why they can bite on bead? I saw a lot of people snagging or flossing salmon, but not natural instinct strike. 😆
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
Logan, contrary to what many believe, Pacific salmon do bite frequently, due to instinct. Coho salmon would chase down a spoon or spinner, sometimes until the lure is almost hitting your feet. Chinook and coho salmon both will bite onto bait, bead or whatever is drifting down the river. Pink and chum salmon would attack rubber and marabou jigs. That's not to say snagging or flossing do no happen, and should be addressed as it is illegal.

I’m confused about bead fishing. Every article and video I watch from all the Pacific Northwest area and here in BC, people say they use a leader of no less than 3 ft, most commonly 4-6 ft, and they say to have your weight on the bottom, and the beads are neutrally buoyant and will act like a real egg on the bottom. But you seem to be approaching it a bit different with a much shorter leader and more of a (suspended) presentation instead of on the bottom. I have been using beads on the Canal with a 3 ft leader and did some tests, and what I found was confusing. I found the bead was behind the weight upstream and the being dragged by the weight?? I always thought that the lighter bead would be downstream of the weight in front, but it wasn’t.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Год назад
I found this opposite, especially if I’m holding my line/float back a little bit. Make sure your bead isn’t bouncing on the bottom occasionally, because then there’d be some drag for sure. That may be what’s happening with the longer leader because there’s too much swaying going on. Kind of like going on a swing. The longer your swing is, the more you would be able to move.
@UnRaT3Dx
@UnRaT3Dx Год назад
@@FishingwithRod so are you setting it up so your bead is fishing like a jig or roe, suspended? Like if the run is 4 ft deep and your using a 2 ft leader do you set your bobber stop to your bead at 3 ft so your bead is a foot off the bottom? And what are your thoughts on all the RU-vid videos out there and articles, even from the bead companies themselves that say the bead is meant to be on the bottom acting like a real egg and to use a 3-6 ft leader and set your weight so it hitting bottom? That seems to be the general setup for almost every video and article I have read. And I’ve gone out 6 times fishing beads with that exact setup and haven’t got a bite and noticed my bead dragging behind my weight right on the bottom. To me that doesn’t seem like it’s in the proper stroke zone like they are advertised to be with that setup, but even BnR themselves recommends the setup with a 3-5 ft leader and your weight on the bottom. So I’m just really confused because from what I’ve seen that bead is way to low on the bottom with that setup, but they literally recommend that setup and they slay fish. And obviously you are a great fisherman and are catching lots of fish on your bead setup that’s way different than I’ve seen everyone else setup. I don’t k ow what to do lol.
@nhatran6888
@nhatran6888 Год назад
@@UnRaT3Dx your leader will likely flow horizontal under water so if you want to fish 1 ft off bottom of 4ft deep run, you just need to set your bobber 3 ft away from your weight
@UnRaT3Dx
@UnRaT3Dx Год назад
@@nhatran6888 that would mean if you are using a short leader of 1 ft your bead would be dragging the bottom. Which is what people say should be happening and how bead companies advertise their beads to be fished, but I was under the impression that it would be floating in randomly in the bottom 1 ft of the river and along the bottom and bounding all around, but after looking at it in the low clear water the bead literally just drags on the bottom, it doesn’t even come up an inch, literally just the bottom, and that is not the strike zone of the fish. Rod seems to suspend his bead like roe (a foot off the bottom) so that means his weight would be set about 3 ft from the bottom with a 2 ft leader. I’m just confused because every bead video and article I’ve seen/read tells you to use a 3-5ft leader and set your weight to the bottom of a foot off the bottom, and you will be in the strike zone. And I tried that and looked in the water to what it looked like and the bead was just dragging right along the bottom

A lot of people in Washington use those super long leaders and beads or Corkies on a drop sinker rig to floss fish. Whether they admit it or not. Especially if they do a sweeping motion with their rod at the end of the drift. Longer leader means more line to floss through more potential fish’s mouths, and the sweeping motion add more probability of that also.

I'm right handed but all my reels are lefty. In my humble idiot opinion, 95% of you are doing it wrong, especially in any casting heavy fishery. Trolling out on the ocean is one thing, but if you are casting and retrieving or drifting a float all day, to me a "left handed" setup seems to be the correct way for right handed people. I don't need any dexterity to spin a reel handle round and round, but for casting, managing line, striking and fighting fish - I want that rod in my right hand. The amount of fishermen I see constantly switching hands to cast kinda proves my point. Most people I see switch just for the cast and not when striking a fish, so Rod your old habit adds a whole layer of weirdness to it. I would have thought that holding your rod with your dominant hand was fishing 101 but what the heck do I know? 😂
