Standard Hard Hats have been the status quo for years. They’re inexpensive, sufficiently protective, and versatile for a variety of wearers in different industries. But that’s starting to change as companies and workers are realizing the benefits of a climbing style hard hat. There are several key features of a climbing style helmet that provide increased safety and productivity for any wearer no matter what industry they’re in. Learn about those benefits in this video.

I wear a wide brim hard hat. I work as a traffic control flagger. Climbing helmets does not protect you from the weather. All this guy is doing is promoting the climbing helmet.

Since this video came out, Milwaukee has introduced a climbing style hard hat. Full “OSHA” certification, with side impact protection too. With or without the brim. With vents or not. Attachment points for multiple accessories. Only downside? Price. True, it won’t keep rain from going down your neck - but the harness holds it on when you’re crawling about or the wind is gusting. Personally, I’d love to see more variety in hard hats. How about styles modeled on the French Adrian helmet, or the British pith helmets in “Zulu?”

I tried climbing with a climbing helmet because it was recommended by an experienced climber & said to be more stream line. The fit was SO MUCH more uncomfortable than my work hard hat. I much prefer my hard hat & plan on adding a chin strap to it.

My hard hat has places for multiple attachments too, as I needed to wear different gear for my job.

Climbing helmets without a brim are not very protective while working on the ground under potential overhead hazards or struck-by incidents. The primary concern should not be comfort. Comfort is a beneficial feature that should be considered by manufacturers to help motivate workers to wear the Proper protection for the environment or task requiring it. Find a helmet that protects from the hazards you face; overhead, flying debris, and impact hazards should be considered. Then, find options that protect from identified hazards. Then, find options within those that will fit the wearer well. Brims increase protection from dropped items to the face and neck and better prevent struck-by impacts. These videos are sales pitches focusing on comfort and convenience. While those are great things to have in your PPE, they are not the starting point for PPE selection. Saying, for example, "Vents are convenient, and by the way, less electrically protective...", is backwards. Always begin assessment needs with the environment and potential hazards included with tasks being performed.

Sounds like the climbing hat has more advantages than hard hat. The chin straps, the suspension feature , that’s what workers really need in real life.

I sometimes work as an offshore welding inspector and one of the main reasons I want to change my helmet is that I find the generic peaked hats obstruct your (upper) vision much more than you might expect. I was looking at the Petzl Vent to replace my generic MSA. I need the chinstrap and unrestricted periphery in vision, because although I'm not on the ropes, I'm always clambering about under structures or going into vessels, or inspecting the root in a pipe, etc. But aside from this, most of the time I don't need a chinstrap. Can it clip together over the top when not in use, or be stowed or detached, or something?

Can you tell me if it’s possible to get a welding helmet adapter for a climbing hard hat?

Climbing style helmets absolutely suck in the rain. They have no drainage gutters and the water will run right down your neck. If you buy a climbing style hard hat you will need to buy another one just for rainy days. And they are a hundred + dollars each. Ridiculous.

Couple of things.. for constructive criticism. Your host here just takes me right out of the message being conveyed. If I'm seeing right he has a man bun type knot. No self respecting man has that.. so I'm immediately thinking "ok, actor basically. So the chin stubble..the thomas magnum stache..the cap is all a uniform. To project the hey I'm a hard hat wearing man you should trust my info. Sorry. Just cant "unsee" it now and poof your info is useless. It may be the best Info and most correct out there. Not disputing that.. just the conveyance of it by putting a man knot on your screen. Opinion of course..thx.

'You dont fit my image of a working man so your information is invalid.' How do you make that conclusion? What goes on in your brain or what have you experienced in your life makes you think another mans personal grooming preference determines his credibility? Are you jealous because you're bald? Japanese samurai used to keep their hair in man buns. Mongolian warriors would tie their hair in man buns before a fight. Vikings braided their hair. The Blackfoot and Cherokee tribes would tie their hair up in ponytails. Shit, Native Americans cant even grow facial hair yet they used to have the strongest and most manly ethics in the Americas. Let me take a guess at your intelligence really quick, and this may be taking it a step too far because Im taking it political. You really thought the wall would keep the Mexicans out, huh? Thats your intelligence level, isnt it?
