Ya at our mill. When sawing hickory and ash we cut 2 or 3 poplar logs every 40 or 50 logs to get the gum cleaned off the saw it works really good

It helps if you got sawbits to change or to sharpen

A big ol Norway spruce with big pitch pockets brought my milling to a halt. I still have the log & will revisit sawing it once the warm weather comes in. I just have a little basic Hudson Oscar 230 Bandsaw mill. But after sawing from my woods hardwoods and cedar larch & pine for 17 years. The Spruce is the first log I have ever had to roll back off the carriage & pause on sawing.

That's very interesting. We've never sawn one of those

@@nicholssawmillandmore It was about 100 years old and 29 inches diameter. It was a yard tree at our lake cottage that had died. We had several of them that somebody introduced years ago. There’s a quite a large stand of them across the lake in the forest by an old smelter. Great big cones. Fast growing.

An old sawmill guy told me that If youre sawing hickory eventually the sawyer, the saw filer and the millwright will be mad at each other and swear the other two dont have a clue.

That's probably accurate but in my case I guess I'll just be mad at myself since I'm all three!!

I'm an old fart, worked at a mill in early 1960's. Hickory was the stuffest and we tried not to saw those logs

That's awesome. We don't want to saw them either but do around every 3 months or so. Thanks for watching
