Yes this type to training will transfer over to other things like getting him started under saddle, the more he comes to trust people again the more relaxed he will be around people again.

Pressure and release bro, the first time he ran he wouldn't have if you would of stopped and waited.

I am so glad you were there with me working with this horse, no he wouldn't of stayed there because every time you come up to him he takes off running, but the next one that comes along I will let you know

Rasul agreed. No release of pressure. Too much too fast. At the start. Unless this guy does it wrong on purpose for the camera the first time he handles horses in his videos. Otherwise he regularly makes the same mistakes over and over. Meaning having to take longer to correct the initial meeting mistake. Granted only watched a few videos out of curiosity to see if the same mistakes are made. And they are. Must like being bit and kicked for the camera. Horse ideally should of been shown the lead rope in same way as the halter. The slow way is the best way
@lucasa1849
@lucasa1849 5 лет назад
It depends on the horse. This horse has a fear of the halter and lead rope and assocaites it with getting abused. In ricks video the horse doesnt want to get caught cause it knows it needs to work and doesnt want to. Mike gives the horse release when hes under the shelter teaching him its a good place to be. He gives good release when trying to pet the horse and he succeded in the end. The horse relaxed a bit and relized mike wasn't gonna hurt him. Nice video, I learned alot.

Can you put up on a corner at the bottom of the hill or mountain a 15 x 15 area for him to go in and eat in. After you are able to catch him a number of times it will just come routine for him to be caught. But any way you can do it just do it every day not matter how long it takes then make sure you reward him and then let him go with out asking him to do any work. You just want him to get the idea it is a good thing to be caught aA

I have a more challenging situation. I rescue a two year old filly that is untouched,put her in pen with my friends horse which I know now I shouldn't of,he chased her and she went through fence,she's not hurt cause wires were loose. But now I need to catch her and put her in a more secure pen. Iv walked fir hours and have got some connection with her and have got as close as she will let me.. iv talked to vet they only said can put sedated medicine in feed but she doesn't really know feed and is just grazing,she was very underweight when I got her four days ago . What can I do? We thought about making a long chute into pen.

I'm curious, why did you keep supplying pressure when the horse was stood and facing you? Wouldn't release have told him standing still was the right thing?
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 8 лет назад
Hi, He was very hard to catch so every time I would approach him and he started to take off I would then put the pressure on and He would go around the pasture and I would let him rest under the cover, after a few days he became very easy to catch. So if he wants to move his feet and run from me it is going to be on my conditions and where he could rest.

@GoldenLioness100
@GoldenLioness100 8 лет назад
Sarah Purcell I thought you were meant beating the horse. The horse is uneasy, true, but most likely the horse has been taught 'how to avoid the human' and 'how to not be caught'. Mike is re-teaching that coming up to the gate end of the field causes him to leave the horse alone, and is therefore the more comfortable place to be.

I just picked up a 7 year old horse. He was in a very small pin for the last 3 years the people fed him and that was pretty much it. They could not even get him the load up in the trailer. I was the one able to coach him in the trailer and bring him out to the ranch. The first day I let him into the barn Stables and a small Pastor area so he could get used to me he was very skittish. By the second day he was much better. I have since calmed him out and got an electric wire out of his tail Main, I've since let him out into the 18 acre pasture but when I call him he will come up to the stable where I'm at. However he's never seen cows before I have 20 head of cattle and he stand on the backside of the pastor and he is just staring and will not focus on me. The only thing he will do is stare at the cattle what would you suggest I do to keep his focus on me and not the cows in the back, or is this just something he will get used to in the next few days? Thanks for any advice

Good Morning, When comes to things the horse is nervous of or scared of I will go through exercises on the ground and under saddle to build the horses confidence and trust. The reason they get scared and nervous is because they think they are going to get hurt. After going through some exercises the horses will find out they not going to get hurt and will learn how to control there fears mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv/

So many critical comments - and I’m willing to bet that those people haven’t worked with traumatized horses. What I saw was a great job of pressure and release.
@TigerKttie

I have a Arabian/TWH that I did behavioral training and he's so lovable now (everybody loves him) but still has trust issues when it comes to pain tolerance. Treatments of any kind that may cause slight pain(according to my vet) will trigger the flight reaction and I won't be able to touch him for days. No one can give me an answer (vet, farrier, horse forums) and I don't have a small pasture. I don't want to corner him in his lean-to in case he hurts me unintentionally. He uses it as a refuge when something upsets him and I'm not near him. Or chase around the pasture in case he slips and break a leg bc it's always swamp land in La. It makes me want to cry seeing him like this because he has UV Itis which is slowly deteriorating. I have to practically lead him to his bucket when it's slightly dark. I'm desperate if you can suggest anything I can try. Thank you so much! You sure do have a lot of beautiful horses to train. Not surprising they're abused like my black bay boy.

I just saved a Morgan cross from auction he's 4-6 years old but I found out the hard way that he was an Amish buggy horse. so he's had a hard life. and even be is in a feild he won't let you catch him unless you shake a grain bin and he Also doesn't no a wholeot of ground manors. how can I yeah. an Amish horsenotto be jumpy and spooky and catch him?

Another thing I would do with a horse like this is isolate him; DONT put him with other horses or even within eyesight of other horses; he will become bored and lonely and will look FORWARD to you when you appear, especially when you only give him grain by hand and NOT in a bucket, so he HAS to come to you for attention and grain. He will enjoy your petting him and handfeeding him and not run away from you! Had several horses for several years...
@kelsiebeaulieu5227
@kelsiebeaulieu5227 10 лет назад
Having 'several horses for several years' doesnt make you an expert! Far from it! Keeping a horse alone is cruel! Horses need the herd for comfort and safety as well as overall happiness. You even admit the horse will get lonely! You are a horrid person!
@Lauren-vd4qe
@Lauren-vd4qe 10 лет назад
Kelsie Beaulieu Well u dont keep the horse alone indefinitely; only until he focuses on YOU for attention, food and affection. When this behaviour is established, then add other horses gradually, then he learns in order to have horse company, he MUST behave properly with HUMAN company.
@kelsiebeaulieu5227
@kelsiebeaulieu5227 10 лет назад
Isolating a horse is the worst and cruelest thing you can do! If that is your 'training tool' you are no trainer!
@andrewcrow5787
@andrewcrow5787 10 лет назад
Kelsie Beaulieu Are you a trainer? I doubt it. Some horses you do have to isolate temporarily so they can focus more on the human more than other horses. You really should only need to do it for a couple days. You would bring food, water, etc and the only contact is between you and the horse. After the first day, the horse should be willing to invite any social interaction and love the human contact. It's not cruel. If you don't feed or give water, THEN it's cruel.

Why so quick to be so critical, so many ways to go about things, for me I see a man who's energy is understood by the horse. That he is kind and has the horses best interest at heart. This intention is more important than any technique and understood by horses as they are the masters of feeling energy. Don't be so shut off to the world it will limit you in so many ways. Be humble and open not critical and egotistical......
@mookfaru835

Plus, I don't think the horse likes being touched by you, in the other video, when he was on the floor, you put your hand on his face, and he bit you. Maybe petting isn't an innate good thing, but it's a learned good thing.

There are different ways around the barn, what I did is if the horse was interested in moving then I had him go in the direction I wanted him to go in and let him rest where I wanted him at to put the halter on.
