Hi jake Basement for me was a standalone label with its own unique sound. I really enjoyed this video it took me right back to room 2 at Nitrous the resurrection at the Rivermead centre in reading which I'm pretty sure was one of phil Wells events. My favourite basement track, mad dogs- out. Phil and Jack smooth remix. Check it out. Stuart 🤟

Great vid. I used to go to Reading to buy my tunes from Basement. Great memories of that shop. Always a vibe to go there and listen to the latest tracks.

I have been waiting for this video there is something magical about Basement records. I used to buy records just because they were Basement record releases. Just so many memories ( all be it hazy ones) but a great channel. 😅

First one I've watched and I LOVE this! 1990-93 is my favourite era, but I was slightly too young to actually go out and experience it. Started going out in 1994 (Dreamscape XII), but even then only sporadically. It's nice to hear someone describe they music as I do, which is to say, kinda in the style of having to describe it in a record shop :D Also, the way that the tunes trigger images in your mind (for you fog over a lake, for me in the case of Tek Trak, someone tap-dancing in an echoey ballroom :D). A good word for the dark late 92-94 tunes is "foreboding", cos they were dark, but still fairly musical, as opposed to the later dark DnB stuff which was like having a brick smacked over your head. The 93 dark stuff was still something that could conjure an image in your mind, like something bad may be about to happen but you're not sure what :D Some other Basement classics are "Inesse" by DJ Mayhem and "Who's Loving Me" off the other Ruff With The Smooth release, which are both totally fantastic. "Out" by Mad Dog, "Don't Beg 4 Love", and "Sub Sector" by Chemical which never gets any love :D Also, non-Basement but along similar signs is "Heaven (Remix)" by Skanna which is totally incredible and almost 'Intelligent' happy hardcore and never fails to have me beaming and shaking my fist in the air (much to the bemusement of the missus!) Anyway, sorry for the ramble, look forward to watching the others!!!

Ron Wells aka Jack Smooth and so many more names, is the reason for the unique sound of Basement Records and Homegrown Records, just a superb hardcore jungle techno producer. His sound is so iconic, and his influence is soooo big. Hardcore needed this darker more grown up side to keep it on the right track, but unfortunately all producers making this sound moved to full jungle & drum and bass. There were some great tracks in 94-95 hardcore but nowhere near as many as in 92-93. That was a very short pinnacle.

Yeah thanks for this comment mate. I know the flat out jungle/drum & bass movement has a very passionate following, but it never really floated my boat in the same way personally either. The Basement sound along with some of the darker, borderline DnB stuff in this era was amazing, but I just found the real purist drum & bass and jungle movement shifted the whole atmosphere and buzz of the clubs in a bit of a moody direction. It just never excited me much. Like I've said in a couple of different videos now, hardcore really trailed off rapidly in 95 for me, to the point where I departed from buying any of it completely by the end of that year. Loving these podcasts. Lots of these tunes i havent heard before, but when you compare these tunes to todays music, you can tell it was ahead of its time. If only they produced stuff like this nowadays. I mostly play house and techno in my man cave, as thats mostly the vinyl i have, but wouldnt mind having a go with these belters. Keep up the videos

Kev Bird, TBN, Wax Doctor. So clever. This is the sound of 93. The absolute Killer Label to trump all others ( in my opinion)

I love Basement.. I think I've got the first 40 or so, including a white of the first one Hedgehog affair (which was on sound entity). As someone else said, they had that uniform sound because Ron Wells engineered or produced most of them. Most of the early ones got caned at Book of Love, Amnesia House. I got the Basement boxset from Phil about ten years ago and I asked him to sign it and he kindly obliged. Legend!

Absolutely loved this trip down memory with this series of Basement records. My gosh I can't even tell how much that signature Jungketekno sound stood out to me. Some tunes i would constantly rewind a part just to go over those blissful breakdowns again and again and never get tired. The intro to, " Dont beg 4 love" (Drum n Bass workout) side. The second breakdown on Kev Birds - Lets turn it out , damn . I could talk about the whole Ron Wells / Fast Floor sound all day. Each track all had a different recipe but skillfully shared similar ingredients . Nice one for bringing this episode . Gonna screw my blown mind back on. 💥💥💥👌🏾

Ron was the mastemind behind all the tracks played in this set as some of the names on the tracks knew very little about creating music,Jack put them on the map A truly talented man who deserves 90% of the credit for most of the people he worked with Legend is an under statement

Does anyone out there know where basement record shop was.....in my hometown Reading it was originally opposite the train station but then moved to kings rd literally 2 min walk from town centre...... anytime u went in there Wud see a top DJ from rave scene getting vinyl That was hotspot for tape packs if u didn't spin A guy who worked there started to get places playing out DJ Lee I was 19/20 when got into rave scene 91/92 started by going free raves in and around oxford done by street level heard Simon baseline smith, easy groove, top buzz all in different free raves this got thousands of ppl attending then after alittle while pay raves come out £20 ticket with atleast 10,000 attending alot of Dosh aswell as drinks food etc someone made alot but boyeeee music was unique just as this channel says So glad I done it all never to b repeated

Yeah was in station road like you say opposite the station before relocating to kings road which has all been redeveloped now. I was in there most sats and remember Lee and sometimes he would tax a fag of me and play the latest tunes sometimes he would drop into a mix. I think he ended up as part of the metalheadz cru

brilliant unique and timeless label very evocative sound even now. Electronic experienced 303 is my fav ever basement one - the breaks, the acid, the bass, the techno it's got it all to my taste perfectly and often featured in both the finest hardcore and heaviest techno sets of the time, what a belter. Bought jack smooths jungle techno classics on bandcamp last year which includes it and lots of other bangers. Great show again life changes and all that but the tunes and vibes live on. Cheers ❤🙏

From the very start of the video I was saying to myself ‘he HAS to mention Kev Bird - This is a trip!’ And low and behold it was your first track 👌🏼 it’s one of my most prized pieces of vinyl and one of my all time favourite tracks. Another was Wax Doctor - A new direction, what a tune that is too.

Some of those breaks are so gorgeous. You’re almost disappoined when they end. I remember the second beak in V10 overload moving me to tears of joy and would play over and over again. That was the power of some of those breaks.

It's been enjoyable to see your passion for the music as i've been going through your channel. Even though i know all the records you've covered so far, i've still loved watching the vids, it's good to see someone sharing their enjoyment and putting it into words. I recommend Mad Dog - Out (Jack n Phil Remix). A track i can listen to from start to finish, and never tire of hearing it. Released on Basement in early 94, DJs were playing it at the end of 93. I'm guessing you may cover Suburban Base and Moving Shadow at some point in the future? The original is such a belter, but I really like the laid back ambience Jack & Phil put into that remix at the same time. It's one I missed at the time, but may well end up in my collection in the near future. That label list you added is really useful for anyone delving into this genre 👍and to be honest is handy for me to reference through as well. An episode of Legend Records would be dope. Tango, Spinback and Gwange were on it and they've laid out a lot of heavy hitters in 93 and 94.

Jack Smooth was producing techno before breakbeat hardcore/rave. His influence is all over Basement Records. The whole sound is a rave, techno fusion, which is truly unique. Basement also one of my favourite labels. Its hard to find another label where almost every tune released is a banger. And they were totally responsible for the deep 1993 darkcore sound.

Every single release on Basement is top drawer. I have no idea why I didn't buy more back in period. Perplexing, but I guess I was young and uncultured. So glad that MPS re-released some of the classics. I believe Kniteforce are reissuing Mayhem - Storm Trooper / Cold Acid, but I've not heard an update.

My old tapes are so shagged, having spent years in a damp loft. Once I've published the main episodes I have planned ahead, and things settle a little, I'm going to do some mixes in decent quality for the channel. Now that I have the means to do them 👊

I'm going to start doing some additional little episodes where I'll pull the whole community together (we have 700 already and growing) to I.D any tunes that subscribers are trying to nail down. I'll give out any descriptions people have provided... or play any clips from mix tapes people have to refer to... and together we can see if anyone knows the answer in the comments section.
