This will be my last Darktide video for the time being. I’m incredibly unimpressed with the game and it’s a step back from Vermintide 2, and to some extent Vermintide 1, in pretty much every aspect. For those that are familiar with melee games and also have experience with playing Vermintide 2 at a high level (i.e. modded difficulties), then there’s a good chance you already share my sentiment. I won’t go into a lot of detail for the sake of brevity, but I’ll try and sum up my main concerns with a reply I left on the forums: “Vermintide 2’s combat is designed in such a way that if you are able to manage your resources properly (i.e. dodge count & stamina) you would always have an option available. Whether it was a defensive or offensive move, using all of these actions in tandem with one another allowed the combat to scale with any amount of enemies on screen if you were skilled enough. This is not an easy feat for most melee games to pull off, and it is why there’s a dedicated competitive community (Onslaught Series) for a PvE Co-Op game no less. Lets not forget about all of those grinding out true solos as well. Darktide’s combat currently reminds me of a more janky Vermintide 1. Naturally, I’m surprised to see it move back in that direction considering a lot of the changes in Vermintide 2 seemed to be in response to Vermintide 1’s combat. Fatshark managed to pull off such a robust gameplay loop with Vermintide 2, which makes it all the more painful to not see it return in all of its glory. I seriously hope the developers read this thread and take the feedback to heart, or at the very least provide some insight into their current combat design philosophy that would justify such a regression.” You can find the full thread here: forums.fatsharkgames.com/t/core-gameplay-sum-up-issues-bad-changes-from-previous-games-and-illogical-approach-to-core-mechanics-loop-mega-thread/59809 If you have the time to read through it, and also through some of the other replies people left, it does a reasonable job of summing up Darktide’s issues without me personally having to write-up a 15 page document. Although… I might still do that, even if it’s for my own sake. I’m just exhausted with the current state of the video game industry. Instead of games pushing boundaries, expanding, and progressing on their previous iterations, I feel like they’re actively regressing and unlearning design lessons and practices. Vermintide 2 had a rocky launch, but at least it had Vermintide 1 as a foundation and you could tell the developers were improving a lot of areas and taking feedback on board (not all areas mind you, but broadly speaking it was an improvement). It took a few years to get Vermintide 2 where it is now, but fundamentally it always felt and played well from day one. Darktide completely throws all of that progress out the window. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s because most of the development team from Vermintide 2 has left the company. That’s just speculation on my part, but it wouldn’t be out of character for the games industry. A lot of franchises have gone downhill in the last decade because of veteran talent leaving, and you can’t blame them either. The industry is miserable to work in, and it’s better pay and hours to just move to software/tech instead. Presumably the work culture is better because of that too. Anyway, I digress. I don’t expect people to care about my opinion on the game, or to even put aside the time to read all of this, but for those that were interested in some of my thoughts then there you go. TL;DR: If you haven’t played Vermintide 1 & 2 then you won’t know what you’re missing out on. If you want a decent Warhammer 40k game then you’re in luck! If you want a reasonable first person co-op cover-shooter, then Darktide is serviceable and fairly average. If you want a good melee game, then I’d strongly recommend playing Vermintide 2 instead. Hell, maybe even Chivalry 2 or Mordhau… that’s just how low Darktide has set the bar. You know a game has problems if it makes me want to go back to Chivalry 2 or Mordhau.

I think the excessive push towards constant tight co-op hurts a bit as well. In V2 if you were good enough you could solo maps or carry teammates that weren't up to snuff. In Darktide they seem to have eliminated that possibility. Sure you can still outperform others, but if the team is downed and you're last one standing you're in for a much tougher time than V2. As you said V2 always gives you options no matter the amount of enemies on screen. In Darktide you lose a massive and important part of your ability to toughness regen when your team goes down, not to mention the other bonuses you get from coherency. You can't dodge dance and block hordes to kite them to advantageous areas like you could in V2 since your stamina regen stops when you dodge, so you end up in this awkward loop of trying to dodge at weird intervals to let your stamina regen slightly in order to block and it just gets you killed in the end. V2 incentivised the team to stay together, absolutely. Most classes had aspects/talents in them that rewarded tight-knit co-op. However the game wasn't forcing your hand in that area. If your team was good enough everyone could be self sufficient and not have to be on each other's backs at all times. I feel like Darktide really cripples you if you try to do this. With the harder focus on cohesion I can understand the idea behind that. The issue is it absolutely neuters your ability to clutch, which is where some of the most intense and memorable moments from V2 came from. Overall I'm still having fun with the game and will probably continue to play it for years to come, but I will always always always be going back to play V2, and I completely understand where you and others that share your thoughts are coming from. Thanks for the video and for sharing your thoughts!

@Trix, would you say that if they remove the dodge stam regen block and bring that back to V2 aswell as base block cost reduction (say by 30%), would that help this game's melee and overall feel?
@TrixMelee
@TrixMelee Год назад
@@jordancampbell2067 That would help the most for sure, but I think even the visual and audio feedback for hitting enemies isn't as good as VT1 & VT2. Animation and sound work is very unlikely to change post-release for any game. I think on top of that the dedicated servers contribute a lot to the hit-registration issues, so I'd like to see peer-to-peer back which could allow for mods again. All wishful thinking on my part though.

@@tremolobanshee Yeah you're pretty spot on with this reply. I think it's also worth pointing out that since individuals are more capable in Vermintide, it allows for more interesting strategy when it comes to difficulty spikes and map events. That becomes very apparent if you watch any modded Vermintide content. You can afford to have 1 or 2 people take a boss away and leave the others to keep the rest of the horde and specials off of them. You can now have 1 person run off and try and stealth or speed run an event whilst the rest of the team hold in a corner somewhere killing everything. In many ways not forcing people to be that tight-nit ends up encouraging people to be even more co-operative in another sense. On top of that, if you've ever seen Dutch Spicy or Onslaught Spicy runs in Vermintide 2, you already need to be incredibly tight as a team anyway in order to DPS hordes properly. It goes to show that having extra 'bonuses' like Coherency in Darktide is sort of irrelevant in a Tide game. If anything I'm more compelled to split up in Darktide to try and take cover from ranged enemies and in order to get better angles on them, which Coherency doesn't account for at all.

Wait, why are you comparing co-op games to PvP ones? Chivalry 2 and Mordhau are totally different from Vermintide 2. Mordhau is for sweats, Chivalry 2 is for casuals and Vermintide 2 is whatever you want it to be, but it's co-op only so not at all comparable. That's just my take.

This game had so much potencial… I went back to Vermintide 2 after like 100h of playtime since it’s so frustrating to see all the stupid mistakes they made that were already fixed in vt2

It's a shame that Darktide has had such a poor start. Classic Fatshark snatching defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. Hopefully they'll see that they've done nothing but regress from the VT2 formula, but I don't have high hopes. oh yeah also good video very nice clear :^)

Pretty much agreed with everything you said :( All that on top of 24h maintenance for adding nothing but a complete scam of a cash shop just leaves a sour taste currently, it's sad.

Hey Trix, given the design of Darktide, do you believe there will be a True Solo community as prominent as the one in Vermintide 2? I had a conversation with someone who insisted very heavily that VT2 veterans would very quickly figure out the game and its meta and that true soloing would surely happen. I've played a ton of Darktide and at least to me it felt plain as day that the game is designed against True Soloing, I've got the impression they wanted to emphasize co-op over any kind of solo play. Clutches are grueling slogs now, from my experience saving pubs. Anyway, I mostly just pubbed Legend and Cata, never True Soloing, so I thought I'd ask someone who is talented at it for their opinion of the future of True Solo in Darktide.

Anything is possible, but Darktide is just incredibly miserable to play because of the combat changes. It does not scale well with a lot of enemies like Vermintide 2 does, even Vermintide 1 scales better despite limiting dodge and block/push to the same resource. Since Fatshark nerfed dodging, and block/push just isn't all that desirable either, it could be a while before we see a true solo. I don't expect there to be a big true solo community in Darktide until changes are made to the combat. Personally I've been sick of Darktide since the end of the first beta purely because of the combat, and I'd rather play Vermintide 2 instead. The changes I'd keep an eye out for in patches would be anything regarding input queuing/timing (so block/push is usable), the dodge cool-down being reverted back to 0.5 seconds, and dodges no longer delaying stamina regeneration. The lack of mod support is a huge detriment to any sort of true solo community forming. There's a lot of QoL mods that make true solos much nicer to grind out in Vermintide 1 and 2 that Darktide doesn't have (skip cutscenes, quick restarts, automatically kill bots, and other tools to learn maps and practice against certain enemies/bosses). Also there's no private lobbies at the moment, and players cannot setup the exact map and difficulty they wish to play.

It has many issues, a Degenerate Monetization Shop, not enough content, 0% Optimization, the Classic Unbalance, tons of Bugs. Smart People will just have to wait on offer when they finish it. They are charging for an Incomplete Tencent Gun Gacha that should be Free to Pay in the first place lol. The only thing they forgot to add was Denuvo ROFL.

At this rate I'll most likely be revisiting Chivalry sometime in the next 12-months when I get my new PC. I won't stick with it for long, but could lead to a video or two.
