In the show, the outbreak began in 2003 when George W. Bush was President (as we saw in Episode 1), which means gay marriage wasn't legal nationwide yet. So, theoretically 1 additional reason why Bill & Frank chose to live on their own instead of in the Boston QZ was because they were a gay couple & they might have been discriminated against for that.

Frank's line about "Older means we're still here" hits harder when you realize that, since the show sets the story 10 years earlier then the game does, Bill & Frank here were two gay men who came of age at the start of the AIDS pandemic. (No wonder '80s music meant "trouble" in their radio code.) Yet they survived, and met, and grew old together.

"[Episode director] Peter Hoar did his director's cut with our editor, Tim Good, which was quite long," Mazin explained. "When they sent it to me, I think it was almost two hours or something like that. So, I was like, oh, that's probably not good. "And I sat down, but I'm like, 'OK, I'll watch the two-hour version of this episode.' And I cried so hard that at one point, I actually said out loud, 'Ow.' "I mean, it hurt. I cried so hard it hurt. And I thought, 'Well, if these guys can do this to me and I wrote this fucking thing, then I think it might work pretty well on other people'." Neil would always say, 'We can change anything, but we need to talk about why. And if there's not a good reason - if we can't do better - let's deliver what we have.'" I'm pretty sure they did better here in this episode with all the changes.

A comment a saw really summed up the change in this episode from the game, in the game Bill shows Joel what he'll become if he continues being the same person he was for the last 20 years and in the show Bill shows Joel what he could be and there being people that can make life worth living again.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this episode. Between watching, rewatching, and reaction videos I don't know how many times I've seen it. Most of us know it beat by beat now, yet like a great song or master painting it never loses its power. We simply marvel at how perfect it is. It's a beautiful poem. It's a testament. It's a master class in writing, performance, direction, music, editing, and adaptation. THIS is how you adapt content between media. The Bill and Ellie dynamic between Earl and Ashley will always exist in the game. But Bill's town is largely an extension of the tutorial, still getting the player into the mechanics. The neighborhood, high school, and truck scene made for amazing gameplay. Story-wise, though, the most compelling part of Bill's Town was finding Frank and the implied backstory. The intent of the section is that Joel and Ellie need a car and provisions. The outcome in the episode is the same. Taking this detour into Bill and Frank's lives was a brilliant stroke of storytelling to get us there.

This episode is really special for so many reasons. The writing is so superb and yet there's zero fat on it. Every word exists for a reason to inform the viewer on some level. The reason Bill mentions leaving the window open explains why the front door closed just before Joel opened the bedroom door. Bill's letter saying (paraphrase) "God help anyone who stands in our way from protecting the ones we love" -- we know what that will eventually mean for Joel. Bills line of "I'm old. I'm satisfied. And you were my purpose." As an "empty nest" father of two, who are now adults writing the new chapters in their lives - one serving in the USAF, and the other graduating college. I felt that deeply.

I mean, considering he was a closeted gay prepper in a tiny US town, I would assume he didn't talk much to anyone even before shit went down, except for maybe his mother until she died. In the game he stayed this way, despite Frank, which eventually drove Frank away and to his death, but Bill was still alive. In the show he learned to change and open up ever so slightly, which got him supplies to fix the fence, advice to reinforce the fence, which protected them against the raiders, he got meds to treat his wound and Frank's disease and a few luxuries, as well as the love of his life and so much joy until his old age that he didn't even want to go back to his old ways, because Frank basically taught him how to live and not just survive. It's also interesting how long Tess & Joel knew each other, as this was not really covered within the game either. And Joel also could not call her a girlfriend, even though he almost did. I'm also glad to just see her again, as I love Anna Torv, knowing her from Fringe, and Tess generally comes a bit short in the story. She originally was planned to have a little backstory too, where she kills her infected husband but can't do the same for her kid, which she ends up locking in a room, but it was cut for time & budget reasons. In the game Bill was kinda there to show Joel how he would possibly end up if he kept closing himself off, like a warning. In the show Bill showed Joel what he could be if he opened himself up again. It's a beautiful display of how opening up and love can be scary, but also how much we can benefit from it if we find someone who truly loves us back.

@ToMPaSHKoV
@ToMPaSHKoV Год назад
The beauty of this episode is that it subverts our expectations. We've been conditioned through modern storytelling to fear everything, especially the benign, the innocuous. Dolls, children, children with dolls, dolls that look like children, all manner of seemingly harmless and familiar things, all trying to kill you. We expect that any kindness will be answered with violence, that any trust met with betrayal. We as an audience have been primed to fear the most faithful of friends, the most reliable family members - especially in this particular genre of horror - and when we encounter a story about caring and commitment amongst the ruins of a dying world, we don't know how to process it and it hits hard. "I was not expecting this" seems to be the most common refrain, with good reason. This is ostensibly a series about a 'zombie apocalypse' where anyone and everyone can go from being a kindred soul to a mortal threat in an instant and no one is to be trusted, especially other humans. Yet this particular tale is about trust, and love, both matrimonial and romantic. It's about allowing oneself to be vulnerable and in that vulnerability, finding those moments of existence that are both ephemeral and priceless. We expect a calamity, a personal buskin beyond the destruction of our civilization. We anticipate a type of misfortune that doesn't occur. During the worst catastrophe in the history of human kind, we bear witness the best thing to ever happen to these two humans, and it's profound; jarring. We await a devastation that never comes to pass; that expectation of tragedy is subverted by a story of love. We expect blood and destruction; what we get is a masterpiece about small, beautiful lives lived less ordinary. This is one of the best stories ever told on film, in my opinion, and it's based on a video game; we've come a long way from Pong.

I had been obsessed with these reactions. This is one of the most concise ones but still maintains thoughtful insight. We did have a few months to prepare for COVID in the US but most of our leaders in power chose to do next to nothing. In California, some precautions were advised in early March 2020 but the shutdown happened very quickly with announcements on the 15th, almost everything closed on the 16th, and then complete shutdown on the 17th. The first friend of mine to die from COVID happened less than three weeks later. I believe Bill is mostly a product of his environment. He shut out a world that rejected him so that's why he isolated himself and was glad when everyone was gone. He could finally just be himself. And thankfully for him, he caught a Frank. Bill's greatest fear wasn't losing Frank. It was dying before Frank. Bill was sorry for getting older faster. He saved and protected Frank. He stood in the middle of the street to draw gunfire away from Frank. When Bill thought he was dying, he said to call Joel and said, "He'll take care of you" implying he had an agreement with Joel and probably would have done the same for Tess if something happened to Joel. And he said, "You were my purpose."

yep in the game Bill wasn't a happy person and was that survivalist simply because he didn't like anyone, nor cared for them. His own words the world died and i was happy it did. He wasn't the lovable guy in the games he was the original Bill non-caring and grumpy. Eventually Frank left him and left him a note saying he hated him for how he was. It wasn't a good 20 years together, but in the show they made Bill someone you liked and it worked out much better.

My favorite episode, both of the show and of reactions. At this point his cPTSD is revving up. Since losing Sarah he shut off his humanity switch to just survive. Save for his brother, the only people who even remotely came close to his heart were Tess, and to a lesser extent Bill and Frank. He just lost them all in quick succession, and for all he knows his brother is gone too. On top of that here is this little girl, a glaring reminder of Sarah he keeps pushing away, because if he lets those emotions back up they will come back hard and fast and reliving them will be overwhelming. Plus if he lets himself care about her in that way, if he lost her, it would kill him. Joel has it rough right now. As for the show, I love how both the game and show versions serve the same story function but as two sides of a coin. The game showed Joel what he would become if he doesn't let people into his heart. The show revealed to him what he could have if he does.

Masterful writing. I have never come to care about characters as fast as I did with this episode.

The game version shows a cautionary tale of what Joel will end up as if he shuts people out. The tv version shows how happy Joel can be if he lets people in. It may have been completely different from the game but it serves its purpose the same. Showing the viewer what can be for Joel.
