Hardtail Vise Build Ep. 11: Shaping Ends of Dynamic Jaw Body

I decided it would be best if both ends of the dynamic jaw was machined so this was another good opportunity to fire up the G&E shaper and share some vertical down-feed shaping. Having the ends machined flat and square will help with establishing other dimensions later as we continue this build.

Not “weird” at all that you enjoy the scent of the old wooden caliper case. Thanks for sharing that. There are many scents that make me feel nostalgic. I watch every video to the end to see your 3 generation photo and appreciate when you talk about your dad and granddad and their tools. Merry Christmas to you and Abby.

Matt at Diesel Creek just ran on his channel his unboxing and mounting one of these vises on his new shopmade shop table. That huge vise and his table, newly made of a long abandoned steel plank were just made for each other. Fireball certainly makes some awesome gear.

The only thing missing here is an old guy about ABOM's size but 30 years older in a well used leather shop apron with a dead cigar stump in his choppers, an oily rag in his hip pocket, watching and listening over his faithful charge singing it's song - "skreeek - tok, skreeek - tok, the song of the clapper box. Can you imagine him setting up a workpiece using a DRO on this old gal? Somewhere I have a picture looking down a line of 30 or so shapers, each one with its faithful operator. May have been taken at the long gone BUDD in Philadelphia. Merry Christmas to you and Abby!

I sense a change of nuance. In the old days, he'd say something like ' I love these old machines, man'. Today, it's ' I know a lot of viewers love to see the old school stuff, so that's why I have chosen to do a lot of the machining on these machines in the home shop'.

The smell of things brings out strong memories. I have a lot of stuff from my Grandpa’s garage, rest his soul, in my shop and if I go in there after a few days of it being closed up the smell takes me right back to helping him out with jobs when I was a kid. This series is just superb. Thanks!

The finish on the ends is probably because of the way the torque flexes the post and holder, leaving that difference in finish from when the machine is surfacing on the top of the part woth the tool hanging down. IDK, just thought about that when you mentioned it. Love this content! Ive learned so much.

Yes, the old way of doing things are often visually appealing and "in one's face" figuratively, and if you put your face too close to the "business end" of the shaper, it is experienced literally as well!!! 😂 Thank you as always!

28.345" . Enjoyed the way you brought this process to us Mr. Booth! 0.016" per stroke, 223 strokes across the face was the guestimate here. Of course we cannot count it, measure it or remember what your dimensions were? Still it's a nice job. I have a vice under repair here with broken cross threaded bolts to extract. So that the new jaws can go on. A massive RECORD branded surplus catch. Lots of room for improvement as it is ageing hard out nowadays.

Thanks Adam for another year of excellent content. Oh,and there is Nothing wrong with a little Aroma Therapy with the caliper box! Aromas will bring back nostalgic memories quicker than anything else and there's nothing wrong with that, reflecting on Dad and Granddad and all the shop memories is a good thing. Thinking back to the days in the shop when you were "Wet behind the ears" and they taught you all the little things that gave you this trade and now you share those with a Worldwide audience. That's Dad and Granddad speaking to them through you, always remember that. The knowledge you share helps so many people learn and enjoy the same skills you do and that's a wonderful gift you give to the world.

There are few things greater than the smell of specific wooden chest! My grandfather had made a few chests of Cedar in his younger years and I'll be damned if opening one isn't a time capsule that'll bring me back to what I was feeling every other time I've been in it. Smell is a powerful thing!!! Bless you and Abby this 2024 brother!!

Adam, you devote an _entire_ channel to cooking, and often show a "smoker." Where do you think the wonderful flavor of smoked meat comes from? Many, many different woods have lovely odors, and these odors are not destroyed by fire. On the contrary they are released unchanged to float up in the smoke and coat your food. Take that box and use it to cook a steak, and you will get a delightful meal.
