Got the RYTM in summer 2021, but couldn’t find time to really get to know it before January 2022. Now finally, I start to understand what this friendly beast can do ... teamed it up with my Novation Peak here for this little jam. Everything sequenced from the RYTM, recorded live to a Cubase stereo track. Only slight mastering (comp, EQ, limiting) added in postproduction.

Very nice performance! I love that you describe what you were doing! Nobody else does that. So the listener does not only hear nice music but also understands what exactly is happening. Awesome!

Do you know if there is a video or manual discussing how to send midi patterns from the AR to multiple synths? Also, how many tracks would I have to sacrifice on the AR to play multiple voices on the Peak and a single voice on the Minitaur? Awesome video and love the setup!

Thx :-) Each of the 12 AR tracks + the FX track can send MIDI notes on individual channels. Those tracks are basically monophonic, but you can get up to 3 notes playing at (almost) the same time from a single track, and even more polyphony through overlapping notes. Check my vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DqciPlm27wA.html 😎

very cool, subscribed. could you do a tutorial on how you control the peak with it? and make chords?

Sequencing external gear from the RYTM in 8 easy steps: 1. Hook up RYTM and Peak to your speakers/headphones. You can connect Peak main outputs to RYTM Ext In with two TS patch cables. This way, Peak audio will be mixed with RYTM main out right before the RYTM master compressor. Power up both devices. 2. Make a MIDI connection. There’s two ways to do it, both will mostly have the same results: Either 5 pin MIDI cable from RYTM MIDI Out to Peak MIDI In. Or connect both RYTM and Peak to a computer via USB, then run a software that can route the RYTM USB MIDI Out to the Peak USB MIDI in. Most DAWs can do this, also free MIDI apps like MIDI OX or Bome Send SX (no idea what you would use on Mac OS). 3. Set the Peak to a MIDI channel of your choice: Press “Settings” on the Peak, navigate to MIDI Control, set MIDI Chan. Let’s use channel 13 for this example. 4. On the RYTM, go to Settings => MIDI Config => Port Confit. Set OUT PORT FUNC to MIDI, OUTPUT TO to MIDI+USB, OUTPUT CH to TRK CH, and PAD DEST and MUTE DEST both to INT+EXT. 5. In RYTM Settings => MIDI Config => Channels, set the RYTM track(s) which you want to use for sequencing the Peak to channel 13. Three tips: A. The RYTM FX track can send MIDI notes to external gear. This way, you can sequence external gear without sacrificing one of the regular RYTM tracks. B. Adjacent RYTM tracks which normally would choke eachother, such as TRK9/CH and TRK10/OH, can send MIDI simultaneously without choking eachother. C. You can set multiple RYTM tracks to the same MIDI channel (Ch.13 in this case) to get real polyphonic control of the Peak: One RYTM channel per voice. Normally, 5 channels should be plenty for even the jazziest of chords. If you use RYTM Tracks 9, 10, 11, 12 & FX for this, you will only lose 2 of the 8 physical internal voices of the RYTM. 6. Go to each RYTM track (including FX track) which you want to send MIDI to the Peak. Press FUNC+TRIG to enter the quantize menu. There, make sure that the “TRK # SEND MIDI” checkbox is checked. 7. Now things should work. If you use the FX track, place some note trigs and press play; the Peak should make sounds. On any other RYTM track controlling the Peak, hitting its pad in PLAY mode should play the Peak live, with the note defined in the TRIG menu. Selecting the track and going to CHRO mode, you can play the Peak chromatically. You can even play polyphonic and apply aftertouch (pad pressure) when playing live; unfortunately, this will not record to the RYTM’s sequencer. 8. So to get polyphony/chords sequenced from the RYTM, there is three options: A. Use a chord sound on the Peak. Peak has three oscillators per voice, which can be tuned to any triad. But well, very limited, since you can only do one type of 3-voice chord this way. B. Use multiple RYTM tracks sending MIDI to the Peak. I find it easiest to start building either the lowest or the highest notes of my desired chord progression first, on one of those RYTM tracks sequencing the Peak. Then, copy the whole track to another RYTM track sequencing the Peak. Tweak each of the notes (easy when using CHRO Mode). Repeat until your chords are ready. C. Or do what I did in this video: Build chords by sending cascading notes to the Peak from a single RYTM track. Overlapping notes will create chords. So, instead of e.g. sending a C major triad - which you can’t from a single RYTM track - rather send note 0 (C) with length 16 on step 1, note 4 (E) with length 15 on step 2, and note 7 (G) with length 14 on step 3. Voilà a C major chord which starts staggered, then lasts for a whole bar.

Absolutely brilliant explanation and an example how Limitation leads to clever workarounds 👍🏼 polyphonic would be cool though :-) one day I will save up for a RYTm machine! I am pretty sure. This box seems to fit my workflow and stuff. One question though, I have right now my Launchpad pro connected to my Digitone and play the 1-4 track on the tone and 5 on the peak. Can you send midi from the Launchpd and at the same time record it into the midi sequencer of the RYTM? Or do we have to put all notes one by one on the RYTM in order to sequence external gear. Thanks for your time good sir! Best regards from Germany, and a subscription for sure!

@@Bowmans_journey I’m not familiar with the launchpad, but in general, you can record incoming MIDI into the RYTM. The RYTM can both receive track-specific MIDI; and you can set one MIDI auto channel, notes received there will be automatically routed to the currently active thrack. There are limitations of course ... CC (such as mod wheel), pitch bend and aftertouch will not be recorded, nor will polyphony or notes faster than the RYTM’s 16-trigs grid. Also, the RYTM sequencer only works in rather low octaves. So I had to pitch some of my Peak presets up by one or two octaves to make them work well with the RYTM.
