• Hardy Kiwi Propagation... - Follow up video one year later showing how it works
www.edibleacres...
www.paypal.me/... - A simple and direct way to ‘tip’ to help support the time and energy we put into making our videos. Thanks so much!
We share some very simple approaches to being able to clone hardy kiwi using an approach layer style of propagation. In the spring, burying a main stem in compost, soil, sawdust, sifted wood chips, sand or really any medium and allowing the new green growth to push through it and be in contact for an extended period promotes a very strong new rooting, although it takes some time. By the fall or perhaps even the next year, each buried shoot will have been able to develop roots on their own timing and be ready for separation...
Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country…
www.edibleacres... - Your order supports the research and learning we share here on youtube.
We also offer consultation and support in our region or remotely. www.edibleacres...
Happy growing!

I love doing that. I just usually use reused 2liter bottles that I cut a hole in the bottom and cut down the side so I can wrap the bottle around vines or branches has worked great and it is nice to easily see roots through the clear bottle so I know when I'm ready to separate the plant often by early summer I have good roots to transplant

I do this with honeysuckle vine. I bury an intersection in a pot and put a brick on it to keep it in contact with the soil. A month later I check to see if it has rooted and cut it away from the mother plant. I have never thought to do this with grapes though. 🤔Thanks for the great videos!

Great ideas with the cloning already have my male on one end of the trellis and the female adjacent on the same trellis growing so that they will join and mate with each other. I plan after they connect to route them back down with a up and down method. Also watching your grape trellis need to go ahead and plant my grape 🍇 seedling into the grounds it’s growing leaps over bounds for two months sprouting all over the place. Many blessings on finding your peace despite the traffic...lol

Fantastic! I love this series on propagation. I did try to layer Schisandra that way and it did not work :( Unrelated, but part of the big picture.....the Schisandra was growing tall and healthy. It was vining up into the Photinia on our land right next to our neighbor, and one day I went out and found the Schisandra was suddenly and unexpected wilted :( A few years ago that happened with some Morning glory that was getting out of control on our side of the fence. In that case I was a little less upset. It was NOT OK for them to just spray on our land, but at least I do concur that Morning Glory is a pain. So I get it now...... do not let plants vine up into trees on our land that is within spray range of the neighbor! They seem to be unlikely to be folks willing to talk it out to come to agreement :(

Hi Sean, it's been a year+ since I last commented. During last summer I purchased an aeroponic cloner, and I put a bubbling machine in the water as well, to help with the oxygen. Long story short, I got roots in the aeroponic cloner. After I transplanted outside, they started drying out. I need to understand what I did wrong, as I'm going to have another opportunity these next few months again, and want to make sure I get them to continue rooting in the soil from the aeroponic cloner.
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 4 года назад
I still have tremendous numbers of failures with experiments in propagation and I've been trying to do it for 8+ years!!
@HYEMP3KING
@HYEMP3KING 4 года назад
Hi Sean, after some discussions with people familiar on this matter, they told me that since the cuttings were getting used to the water-only.method, they couldn't change the soil medium to a normal soil in one turn. Basically after rooting, I needed to transplant into a perlite-only or other "breathable" medium, for a week or two, THEN transplant into the soil. So in essence it's a step-by-step process to get into soil at the end.

So I actually did something like this with an Aronia berry that had a low hanging branch. I buried the branch and it sprouted 3 new branches. I’m testing the same with goumi. Bending a branch down and burying the branch to see if they will take root.

Wow never thought of doing this on anything but Fig before! Thanks. I notice this happening with Akebia vine naturally if a vine falls to the ground. It roots quickly at all contact points.
@edibleacres
@edibleacres 6 лет назад
Absolutely. I should have mentioned Akebia, another great example. Pretty much always worth experimenting with this style I've found since the vines don't mind it either way, and more often than not it means more rooting at a leisurely rate. Its so easy to try I've just made it a habit of doing with every vine, and now I'm getting SO many more vines to work with!
@eldonelder7254
@eldonelder7254 5 лет назад
I've done this with high-bush cranberries and forsythia too. It would probably work with most woody plants (lilac?). I found out by accident when the branches accidentally touched ground for a season and rooted so now I intentionally bend branches down, put a little dirt over them, and lay a rock on them to start new ones to give to friends.

I’m not anting to grow hardy kiwi on my ugly 6’ chain link fencing surrounding my yard. It’s about 400’ on all 4 sections. Should I plant on the chain link & will it be okay or the top get too unruly? I could add like a clothes line type top. But really don’t know what I should do. I’m hopeful I can just grow on fence. Hi, I have to say I have really been enjoying watching your videos and seeing the work you do and find it very inspiring. So thank you for all that you do and share. I live in the high desert of northern New Mexico, about 5.5 thousand feet zone 6b and pretty dry sandy conditions. I wanted to ask you as someone who is new to gardening and permaculture what you would suggest planting. I live on .6 of an acre and have a mature cottonwood with space all around it to grow. I also have a mature pear tree an apple tree and apricot tree. I would just like to know what you would try to grow here and if you know of any additional resources you know of for growing plants in my area. Also do yo have any suggestions on how to grow grapes from cuttings? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi, any updates on how the kiwiberries did? I have tried propogating from soft cuttings in 50% perlite/50% vermiculite and it's been 3 weeks already in a humid type of environment but the leaves are starting to dry out now. I've put the cuttings in root hormone and they are not in direct sunlight. I haven't been watering it everyday so it's not waterlogged...just enough to get the roots from starting.

Male and female flowers grow on separate kiwifruit plants. Male flowers produce pollen from the numerous stamens. Female flowers have a well-developed ovary with long sticky stigmas in the centre. Although female flowers have stamens, they do not produce functional pollen.
