Harlech Castle has seen many sieges. During two mighty wars it became the last holdout of a losing side -- when all other castles in Wales and England had fallen. And in one of those times it turned out to be the longest siege in British history.

So interesting! I like learning how Wales (& Scotland) fit into events I only really know the English narrative of, like the Civil War & the Wars of the Roses. And I love that Owain Glyndwr held a castle built by an English king to suppress Wales! It's a beautiful castle, & I'm glad it wasn't properly destroyed.

Nice to hear the correct pronunciation - Harlech - and not the usual commonly mispronounced 'Hahlick'

Diolch yn fawr. Mae’n bwysig i amddiffyn ein enwau Chymreig. The correct pronunciation is worth protecting, I’d say.

@6:39 the drawing from the 17th century appears to show that the sea had retreated and the castle was totally land-locked... is that accurate as far as you know? Any idea of when this happened?

Yes, there seems to a big difference in a relatively short period. I assume it has been gradual, but have no more information, sorry.

@@ryansmith9711 Hi,in the illustration of Harlech by John Speed ,it appears that the castle is landlocked - but its _sand_ to the left of the castle -the tide is out. There's another image by John Speed of Harlech in 1610 where the tide is _in_ showing the sea coming to the base of the curtain wall ,this can be found on Speed's 'map of Wales' 🙂👍
