This is one of Tim's brand new Harley Benton guitars delivered directly from Germany to Reloved Guitars for set up. I set up one of these when they first came out and that guitar simply would not return to pitch when using the tremolo arm. Since then I'm thinking they may have opted for a better (Wilkinson) 2 point tremolo because the one on this model works without any problem at all. The guitar is a good looking 'super strat' kind of style with HSH pickup configuration. The roasted maple fingerboard looks great (albeit visually a bit 'dry') but the stainless steel frets were hellishly scratchy on first playing. The plan was to fit an adjustable Tusq nut (Tim wanted one of these) although this model DOES come with a Tusq nut fitted. On removing the original nut I discovered that the nut slot was in fact a little too shallow to work with the adjustable nut so I had to revert to a 12" radius fixed nut. So you'll see me go through a couple of nuts en route to this solution in part because of my (false!) assumption that this was a 9.5" radius neck. When I discovered finally that it was 12" I settled on a white nut and white string trees to match.
The fret levelling process took out a tiny bit of fret slap on these otherwise pretty level frets and allowed me to re-crown, sand and polish out the rough frets. The only thing I could find as a complaint with this guitar was the rusty screws that surprised me when I removed the tremolo springs cover on the back. I have no idea what caused this rust - or how the wood could come to be so damp or wet long enough for that rust to develop but close inspection confirmed it was indeed good old fashioned rust. I've seen a ton of guitars with rusty pickguard screws over the years but none of them 'brand new' from the retailer. But then again, who knows how long really passes from manufacture to shipping out to the buying customer?

Hey Sam, I'm totally in agreement with you when it comes to locking tuners. I often hear the argument is that they offer better tuning stability and make restringing faster. But from personal experience when I string and stretch my strings properly my guitars have no problem staying in tune,as for time saving it probably saves me an extra minute or 2 vs conventional tuners, so the difference is so minimal it's not worth chasing after them or investing in them in my opinion.
@kensolo6793
@kensolo6793 Год назад
Hi Sam - I love locking tuners and I have them on all of my guitars that do not have a locking nut. I had originally run into the same problem with them breaking when I am stretching but what I learned is that I was over tightening the locking mechanism and it was actually crushing the string when I did this. I found it does not take a lot of pressure to actually lock the string in place. Once I stopped over-tightening the locking mechanism I have no longer had any string break issues.

Ken, you're right; there is an optimal tension beyond which you don't need to go. But it's so 'hit and miss' i.e. how do you ever find that point? Or remember how much strength you need from one time to the next? I guess with repetition you get there. I never insist what works for me should work for anyone else - so locking tuners don't really offer me as simple a solution as they look on paper (for the extra cost and weight) so I tend to avoid them

Stainless steel frets are always rough when new... I don't know why but it's normal. I own an Ibanez MM1 (3600$ CAD) and they were super rough at first.. I was shocked! I was about to pass on that one.. then the seller told me it was normal, and after a few hours of playing it (bending strings), they became as smooth as they could ever be. 2.5 years later... playing it many hours everyday... they still look IDENTICAL (not a single wear mark, still mirror-like). I now own 2 guitars with stainless steel frets, and the same thing happened...they were super rough/scratchy the first day... then became perfectly smooth a few hours later. I don't know why it doesn't happen with nickel frets, but this is totally normal with stainless steel apparently.

That's curious to know... I've never really researched that. Nor have I noticed the stainless wire I've re-fretted with to be rough at the start (of course by the time i've done my levelling and before sanding and polishing them back out they are!)

Hello Sam, that HB Fusion 3 is the exactly the model and color I recently requested Harley Benton make available in a left handed option. I sent a request to Thomann as well a Harley Benton. I have 5 HB guitars and let them know they need to offer more selection of Left handed versions. I see good reviews on RU-vid for the . Keeping my hopes up that they will deliver. In the mean time, will continue to check out out your videos, and recover. As a side note, I did a review of the HB CST-24 T left handed I recently bought from them and they posted it just as I entered it. I gave it my honest evaluation and is there for all to see.

It's terrible how inadequate / limited left-handed provision is Rick. Surely in this day and age it's possible to estimate fairly accurately of a guitar-playing market how many will be left-handed and accommodate that? Read your review on Thomann - thanks for the shout-out (as the youngsters say). It always makes me smile when friends of Reloved refer to 'last fret' actions - knowing that eventually someone will say "Oh, no, you're supposed to measure at the 12th fret, don't you know anything...." :-)

If you mean the long fret levelling file a I use, it’s called the ‘banana’ (fun name). It’s a adjustable truss rod with 400 grit paper on its base. I use it to level frets with the guitar fully strung and neck fully loaded. It’s an elegant method but takes some understanding of how to use it (and why it works). My eBook ‘5 Steps to guitar set up heaven’ shows how to make it and use it. There’s a link to it top right of the header image on this RU-vid channel

Hi Peter - my '5 Steps To Guitar Set up Heaven' eBook shows in detail how to make and use this file to level the frets with the neck under load (and under compression). It's the fact that it's under compression when you level (as it is when you play) that makes this approach to levelling more accurate and less costly in fret metal. More info about the eBook here: facebook.com/relovedguitars/posts/pfbid02hGH2txcpBzZJMg7uXB9pKU6piWUBXzwYoPRrU2QVChnVSP35YHBwvGiHYsdgnCVKl It's £24.99 - 165+ pages showing how to do my electric and acoustic set ups using the least expensive tools possible. Also covers (and de-mystifies) the basic theory of guitar set up so you know what's going on and why. Best wishes Sam

I bought one of these recently, but I haven't really touched it because I'm now extremely concerned about tightening the truss rod. The guitar was shipped with the action about 2 1/2 mm of the fingerboard, so naturally I went to adjust it. But when I turned the crank there was an alarming crackling sound. Do you know if this is normal or is the truss rod broken? I'll greatly appreciate any feedback.
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
First of all, when you want to adjust your playing action your truss rod is not where you go to adjust it. It exists for a different purpose which is to control the amount of curvature your neck has when under load. Yes, adjustments to that curvature do result in some increase or decrease in the playing action near the middle of the neck but to resort to the truss rod to adjust action is to misunderstand its purpose. When you want to lower your playing action at the bridge end you need to lower the bridge by turning the post screws clockwise with a screwdriver. You may find that lowering your action this way introduces some buzz. If this is the case, it will be because of your guitar's uneven frets (they all have them). Most guitars leave the factory with the action set high enough so that the uneven frets don't cause a problem. But if you want a lower action, you may have to get your frets levelled for it to play cleanly. Back to your question of the truss rod: it's impossible to know what's making the 'crackling' sound you're describing. It could easily be the truss rod pushing against the tape used to cover it over in its slot... or it could be something else. No way of knowing without seeing it. What I do know is that truss rods are very strong devices (pieces of steel welded together) so they're highly unlikely to break although it is technically possible for a weld to shear. What's more important is 'does the amount of relief (the curvature) of the neck change when you tighten and slack the truss rod'? You'll need to know how to assess that before looking to make any adjustments with the truss rod adjuster but, very simply, you should be able to sight along the neck and see if it humps (like hill), goes flat or becomes 'relieved' (sunken like a dip).

@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
It's made from a U-Channel truss rod with 400 grit self-adhesive sandpaper on the underside. The method I use is to level with the neck strung and relieved so the aim is to 'tune' the truss rod to map the neck's curve. It's easy to make this tool (my eBook '5 Steps to Guitar Set up Heaven' shows how) but takes more practice to get good at it and be able to 'read' what's going on with a neck and frets by using it. Hi Sam I've recently bought Fusion III, which has an insane amount of fret buzz. Have you noticed something like this on this one? I've adjusted the truss rod to have about 0.3mm gap on the 8th fret and the action is 1mm to 1.6mm. Any idea how I can fix this?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
Hi Roman... Yes... but it was what I call 'fret slap' (my personal distinction). In my world, fret buzz is localised to a small number of specific locations and caused by a single low or high fret (the impact is the same). What I call 'fret slap' is where the thicker strings clatter into the 'hills' in the overall fingerboard topography - the fingerboard tends to have a series of hills and valleys, made of up groups of high and low frets. Even with no single high/low frets causing fret buzz, MOST guitars set with low actions struggle with fret 'slap' particularly in the wound strings that move more. I've found over the years that approaching these two things separately (at least mentally separate) allows me to a) remove the buzz caused by individual high or low frets AND b) reduce or remove the 'slap' caused by the hills / valleys of the overall neck. So the short answer is that whether you've got fret buzz, fret slap or both the only solution (if you don't want to raise your playing action and/or add in loads of relief) is to level the frets. The reason I use my method is because it's the only method that allows me to determine exactly when I've cleared up both kinds of buzz / slap and therefore when to stop. My eBook covers the basics of using this tool to level frets; I'm currently planning a 'bolt-on' eBook that covers the distinction I outlined (above) between the two kinds of buzz/slap and exactly how to approach them. If I can find the time I hope to produce and publish it before the summer!

@@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars appreciate such a detailed answer. Great insights! I've also managed to solve the problem already. A few days back I took this guitar to a luthier (he noticed that frets are not leveled immediately and gave them a polish). He adjusts the action even lower, because he plays very softly. So previously I only had to lift the 6th string and the slap buzz was gone. This time it didn't work even though i lifted all the strings quite significantly. So I gave him a call, and said that the guitar is completely unplayable. Shortly, I sat in his room plugged into his amp. Supper heavy strum - no buzz. I felt like an idiot😅 Probably there's something with my virtual amp bringing buzz frequencies up. Also, luthier told me that I my right hand is really quite heavy and 9s are no good for me. Will change the strings and report back here in case other people would be experiencing same issue

These guitars are in general very good value and the roasted maple feels very good to the hand (it has a nice raw feeling). The only problem is that the maple they are using has pretty excessive "staining" that does not look that great to me. HB models with darker roasted maple necks have this issue much less though.
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars 11 месяцев назад
I think roasted maple is all-round a good move in that it just looks better than the pale (and cheap) far East maple-y stuff. It's probably because we're used to associating that aged darker-amber look to old, quality guitars.

Been awhile since I checked in. So you are moving each string over, setting the rod vs sacrificing a whole set of strings? Great camera angle on the fret filing. You can see the tiny black marker, lines which of course disappear as the even-ing process works. And I didn’t mind the chit-chat whatsoever. All the best, Sam!
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
Hi sorry for the late reply! Yes, I sacrifice a set of strings in my set ups as I pull then around and they get dirty with marker pen and dust etc. The only difference between the 'Banana' method and the 'Katana' method that inspired it is that you don't have to move a string out of the way with the Katana... I originally had wondered if that would be a big deal; turns out over 8 years later, it really wasn't. The impact on the neck geometry for pulling that one string aside is so minimal as to be difficult to even observe meaningfully.

@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
Not sure exactly what you mean... IIRC this has a 2 point trem which can be locked, down-only or fully-floating. With 2-point trems, IF the geometry of the neck / body joint allows, you can sometimes 'fully float' with the plate horizontal rather than tilted up. But to do that requires the bridge studs to be set high out of the body (giving clear space for pulling back on the trem) but the basic 'Strat' geometry usually doesn't allow that without either designing FOR that from scratch or using some fairly hefty shims to lift the neck up in the pocket.

These weren't even rusted much on the outside, mainly on the threads. Sometimes this happens when something gets spilled over the front of a guitar (water or beer or tea quickly gets into the screw holes and stays there no matter how much mopping up you do)... but this is brand new. It's a readily-available form of naptha called 'Coleman's cooking fuel' used in camping stoves. In the UK it's about £10 a litre. Used to buy large 5L bottles / tins of industrial naptha but a few years ago they put some sort of restrictions on the one I used. I tried a couple of petroleum ether alternatives that claimed to be naptha but they were different and I didn't trust them. I might be paying over the odds for Coleman's but at least it's consistent and I know where to get it each time.
