Harley Benton MV-4MSB Gotoh: harleybenton.com/product/mv-4...
Hey Everyone! Today we're reviewing the latest bass from Harley Benton's Modern Vintage lineup, the Fender Mustang PJ inspired MV-4MSB Gotoh. This bass has a lot to offer with its roasted maple neck, gotoh tuners, alder body, brass saddle bridge, Roswell Alnico V PJ pickups, along with a bunch of really neat vintage inspired finishes. However, it is missing one crucial feature out of the box.... Will it be a deal breaker? Let's find out!
NOTE: This bass is strung with SIT Powerwound Short Scale 40-95 strings.
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

Yea! the video I have been waiting for! been looking at lots of SS basses and this one is very cool. Thanks for addressing the possible neck dive issue. A pick up switch and some flat wounds would make this a nice little player. Thanks Lobster, Happy New Year!

Great review. I own a Fender AP II P-bass, a Fender MIJ Jazz bass, and a Fender MIM P-bass. They're all great, but I also love my two Harley Bentons: the JB-75 MN NA and the MV-4JB Gotoh SFG. The HBs are amazing basses at any price. I don't think I'd buy the MV-4MSB given the lack of a pickup selector, but it's still beautiful like the others.

Flats and the ability to solo the P-pickup may change my mind on this bass?! Really looking forward to your mods. Lobster. Please consider some before/after comparison footage in the next video! Nice construction and features on this bass but c'mon Harley Benton thud and thump is what we are looking for in these Mustang style basses. Glad to hear they kept the weight down as well. I was really hoping they were not coming out with a 10lb. short scale?!😮

I actually like that the bass doesn’t have a pickup selector as I typically run my P and J pickups both at full on all time and EQ my bass amps for my desired tone. Also, something you didn’t mention is the contoured back, that’s especially nice considering all the Mustang bass are all flat on the back. The no pickup selector and the contoured back are both big buying points for me for this Harley Benton. Of course I would make it a BEAD bass as I do with all my long and short scale 4 string bass. I’m definitely thinking about getting this bass !!!! Great review Lobster as usual 😎 Cheers, Davyo

I was going to say the lack of a pickup switch (which I see you remedied in a mod video) would be a deal breaker, but when you mentioned that the bass is priced comparably to a Squier Bronco it gave some much-needed perspective. Based on your description, I'd bet this bass has superior build quality to my MIM Fender Player Mustang that was more than 3 times the price. But at least the Fender has a (noisy and slightly loose) pickup selector switch! :P

Yes... Lobster..this is a beautiful bass!! We ordered in our music school exactly the same..and give it the name of...little Prince. Like yours it's a heavier short scale bass...brighter ton pickups..and a surprising very good tone control for this price range .. that gives you 3 different tone option. And the downside is that you can't choosing the balance..I think both and J are on 100%..I am very exciting to see your mods on this.. especially hearing only de P pickup, that seemed to have a nice sound. Another mention was the horrible strings...with good short scale strings..sounds way way better and yes..for us..the Labellas sounds and feels great for this bass. But we'll keep to recommend the other students the U5 (your review was the key)..you don't need to do mods...and is an awesome short scale bass..Lobster .. thank you so much for so honest and great review and mods....Cheers 🤗

It's the first Mustang style bass that sounds good to me. Back in High School (over 40 years ago) my friend had the genuine article that he EL Kabonged. I guess you have to be older to understand that obscure reference. He held Mustangs in such low regard that he smashed it up. He did the same to a Vox violin bass but I rescued that neck and made a body for it of red oak and played a number of shows with it.

Depending on how big of a difference there is between the two pickups (which probably is a lot), a blend knob would probably not work very well. This is most likely the reason why most PJ and Jazz basses have two volumes instead of a blend. A selector switch would make more sense. You could otherwise remove the tone pot and replace it with another volume, or replace the volume with a dual-concentric/stacked pot so you get volume for both pickups.

About 5 years ago, I purchased a new Squier Vintage Modified Fender style Jaguar Bass, PJ config short scale , with a right sized Fender GigBag for $225. Very nice for the money, but had to change strings, of course. That was what I needed to get me off the PJ AND short scale bass GAS. I really like it at times, and I use it for certain things, but, for the most part when I do, I either use the J pick up alone with the tone down or just the P pickup with various tones. Doesn’t sound good with both pickups on and varying tone bc of noise interference. Idk if that’s typical or not, but it’s good to be able to use the P or J separately, as they are both a totally different vibe, as they should be..👨🏻 🥳Rock on Lobster Man.. 👍

@@chizorama Yeah that's very true, also the positioning of the switch is not the greatest unfortunately... Originally I was going for a medium scale Jaguar bass (PJ configuration) but Fender doesn't have that (Squier does though, even with stacked volume/tone controls for each pickup), they only let you pay double the amount for a bass with less features and medium/short scale is nowhere to be seen. But since I'm looking for a quality instrument that will last I will go with the Fender Mustang. TLDR: There are always compromises to be made it seems when looking for a new bass...

I was casually looking at this the other day and considering. Thanks for pointing out the typo -- 38 mm nut makes a short scale feel like a toy to me. Had the Squier VM jag SS and quickly sold (also a jazz-width neck). Now I have an Ibanez TMB-30 short scale with one of the best sounding PJ combinations I've heard (but, yes, there is hum . . . ). And it really has a 41 mm neck, which makes it feel much moire substantial (similar with my Burny SBEB-65 short scale EB-3 clone -- my other current short scale). The TMB-30 super budget as well -- think I paid earlier this year $199 new plus shipping. You should review that bass (again, great Ibanez Dynamix PJ pickups). All that said, the pick sound for this bass here really got my attention as I was typing this, so it's a real shame to me about the nut width. Oh well, money saved is . . . money not spent on a new bass, I suppose.

Great coincidence that I happened to order one of these basses on the same day your review came out! I'm really looking forward to playing it. It seems like Harley Benton are occupying a similar kind of niche to the early Squier CV basses (talking 10+ years ago now) in being well-made instruments with mostly good quality control, that can eventually be modified with higher quality electronics and hardware. Must admit I don't quite understand how they can offer some of this hardware at these price points - I have also ordered their LP-style guitar for around the same price which comes with stainless steel fretwire, a graphteq nut and gotoh hardware - just incredible... I'm interested to see what solutions other people come up with regarding the pickup switching. I think your idea makes the most sense as clearly the P pickup would be the money maker here. Personally, I rarely (never) touch the tone control on any of my instruments so I wonder if Vol/Blend or just Vol/Vol would be the way to go.

The J bridge pickup on a mustang doesn't really do what a J bridge pickup does when soloed, so I get why they didn't bother giving that option. Having said that, if I'm gonna have a mustang with one sound, I'd rather stick with the classic mustang pickup. It's really underrated for having it's own unique sound - not just a split coil that isn't quite a P, but really it's own thing.
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster Год назад
That's EXACTLY the reason I went with the push/pull. I thought most mustang players want the P solo option more than the J, and the J is there to accompany the P pickup rather than stand on its own. The series/P-solo mod brings the best out of this bass IMO, and a pickup upgrade makes it even sweeter.

Why in the world would they leave out the pickup selector? Cost savings? That doesn't seem reasonable.
@justinkline1294
@justinkline1294 Год назад
I must be missing something here. What is so hard about turning down the volume to select your pickup, rather than flipping a switch? Kill-switch potential is only loss that I can think of. But is it something else?
@marunikusbakufu
@marunikusbakufu Год назад
@@justinkline1294 The volume works on both pickups at the same time. You can't use the volume to turn down only one pickup at a time.
@justinkline1294
@justinkline1294 Год назад
@@marunikusbakufu ??? If you are right, then it is pretty ridiculous. But I think it's a master tone and a volume for each pickup (3 knobs). Just like a traditional jazz bass (none of which have a pickup selector). Or even the Squier VM Jag SS. To solo a pickup you turn the other all the way down (or can blend pickups at different volumes if that's your thing. But you say it's one volume -- so then what are the other 2 knobs. Am I just really confused?

@@justinkline1294 No offense intended, but I think you're just confused. Lobster will explain all of this on his mod vid that is dropping on Thursday.

@@marunikusbakufu No offense taken. It was an honest question, about which I am apparently confused. So I'll watch for the Thurs. drop notification and get my learn on then. So, thanks.

Mustangs, Bullets, and Bronco basses...(oh my, oh my)...I'd always see in pawn shops, and nobody ever bought them. I don't even know why they even continue to make them.

I love the tone of this bass, but I think it might not sound as good without both pickups engaged, they may be acting with each other to reduce hum, can't really hear it in the video, so to be honest, I wouldn't touch a thing on it.

The finish is but the model is still around. Looks like it's just pink, black, seafoam and sunburst. Still good options, but this burgundy mist/purple is really nice. I snagged one of the last MV4-PJ's in the burgundy mist too

Au vu de cette review cette basse est déséquilibrée, autant que la jb62, la jb62 avec une sangle s'équilibre aussi. Le ton est léger parce que short scale. Même en changer les micros et tout ça reste une shit scale avec un ton fluet. 4:30
