Harley-Davidson Vs Honda. Which is the Tourer/Bagger for YOU? Heritage Classic 114 v Gold Wing 1800B

We pitch the Harley-Davidson Tourer against the Honda Tourer to see which bike suits best.
In this shootout, we look at the touring bikes from Harley-Davidson and compare them against the Honda Gold Wing 1800B bagger/tourer, and look at what comes out on top for long distance touring, medium distance rides and every day use.
The bikes are very different in their DNA and may appeal to different types of person. Are you more conservative or are you a grown-up rebel? One would suit you more than the other.
Do you want loud or do you want subtle?
We discuss the differences and help you make that decision.
In this video we mention the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special, and Street Glide Special as alternative choices to the Heritage Classic.
Is one motorcycle better than the other, or does it come down to style, spirit and personality?
Both these tourers are full-size 1800cc monsters with masses of torque and power, and are both suited to the long-haul as well as every day riding.

I live in a warm climate so things like liquid cooling mean more to me. Plus, reliability. Honda's are bullet-proof. And I think one of the strangest things to my mind is buying a $25,000 Harley and immediately spending another 6 or 7,000 on different exhausts, or engine modifications and the like. Whereas, with the Honda, there isn't much need to change anything mechanically.

Being in the fortunate position of owning a 2014 Road King Classic (upgraded with the Screamin Eagle Stage V1 kit) and a 2018 Goldwing-the Road is without doubt more comfy for the long ride and I think a better balanced bike. The Goldwing is so smooth-no clunks from the gearbox and so much standard kit. The Harley has “soul” (it’s my baby!!) the Goldwing is beautiful reliable no gimmicks technology-you don’t need to spend a fortune on aftermarket gear. I ride with the HOG Chapter and any “serious” biker will have nothing bad to say about the Goldwing-it’s beautiful looking machine.

For me the choice is simple. If posing is your higher priority get the Harley. If riding long distance is your priority get the Goldwing. You don't have to have the Wing in the horrible colours you had. Mine (tour version) is gloss black with chromed exhausts. Looks great. I've had it just over 18 months now. Father Time sucks. Rode sport bikes all my life but the time came where I had to move to something more comfortable. Test rode many bikes and it came down to a Harley Street Glide and a Godwing Tour DCT. Went with the wing for two reasons, power and handling. Guess it really comes down to what your looking for in the riding experience. The Harley has soul and character but being an experienced rider it would not allow me to ride the way I prefer, to heavy to slow. The Wings Handling is head and shoulders above the Harley and the power is not in the same ball park. Easy choice for me.

There are no comparisons here. A Harley-Davidson is for people that like old muscle cars cool sounding engines and good classy old fashioned looks. Goldwings are for people who would rather drive something like a Ferrari or a sports car that's modern day convenience. I like both. The Harley is better for social gatherings and the Honda is great for commuting 40 miles back and forth to work or a quiet ride with the misses. They are both great motorcycles for completely different reasons.

Difficult to pick between, I have a new Goldwing tour, not the DCT I like control, having had a Heritage and a Glide in the past, the Honda is just so refined, and with the cruise on , stereo playing through my SENA and the heated seat, grips and screen up, its a nice place to be for a long days ride, and the best bit no fatigue. But I still love Harleys, but the older carb models, the EVO was the pinnacle of Harley, yes wasn't as powerful as the new ones, but a harley isn't about speed, its about looking and sounding good getting there. Hard review, couldn't pick a winner, its a personal choice. But very honest which is why I watch.

Great review, but it added more thoughts. Recently I put my Goldwing 2022 bagger into repairs ( saddlebags and some other bits due to an accident). Being in the garage for a couple months and I still dont have my bike back, as still missing some parts ( each saddlebag consists of about 80 parts). So some of Harley's designs are far more easy and pratical. In terms of riding, I agree Goldwing is a very very good bike- riding, speed, technology, comfort, etc. But Harley has its style, simplistic design and other perks. So, as per above, I am seriously considering to change my Goldwing to HD Heritage Classic

I love the look and sound of Harley, although I wouldn’t put loud pipes on it. I like the quiet rumble of the stock exhaust. Harleys are definitely candy for the eyes. If money was no object, I’d have several bikes, Harley being one of them. But since money is a limiting factor for me, my bike of choice is the GoldWing. I currently own a 2013 F6B. Great bike. I’ve had it 4 years and put 42,000, trouble free kms on it. I’ve just ordered a 2021 Tour DCT. Pretty excited about it. It’s a big chunk of change, but I’m 68 years young and none of us know how long we’re going to be here. So, as the saying goes..... “Buy the damn motorcycle!” My significant other and I plan to do a lot of riding this season.

I own both of these bikes, but the Goldwing is a six speed tour model. Comfort is subjective and I have needed to spend many thousands of dollars to make the Goldwing comfortable for me. The stock seat is horrible and the bar position is not in the least adjustable. The Harley seat is a bit more comfortable for me but not for my pillion. Most disappointing with the Honda is that it is hardly trouble free. I’ve had a number of electrical issues. Switches and servo motors have failed, some with very inconvenient consequences. The Goldwing is a very complex machine and if you do your own work it can be very difficult. An air filter change can take up to six hours to complete and installing accessories can also be difficult. The Harley is much easier to work on. That being said, the Honda does things magnificently, the suspension, handling, brakes and smoothness blows the Harley away. It’s a phenomenal bike when everything works, but it doesn’t always. In the States it’s easy to find a Harley dealer if your on a trip. Not so with Honda. I do disagree with one of your statements, all Harley’s are not the same. The touring bikes have a different frame and suspension so comparing it to a Road Glide would be a better comparison. The comparison between those bikes would show them similar in weather protection whereas the Softail can’t compete with the Goldwing. My take on it is this, if I’m going alone I’ll take the Harley. If I’m taking a pillion it’s definitely the Goldwing. I also own a T120 Bonneville, which is far more fun to ride than either the Harley or the Honda. Guess which one spends the least time in the shop? Surprisingly it’s the Harley.

You must have gotten a lemon because there are hundreds of thousands of gold wings out there that have gone hundreds of thousands of miles with no problems not to mention pan Europeans that will do two or 300,000 miles with very little maintenance. Maybe you can get to everything on a Harley but you’re gonna be getting to it a lot and you also will be wiping up a lot of oil.

@@DrRyman go on any online Goldwing forum and you will see that I am not alone when it comes to problems. The hill start assist failed, the servo motor that ultimately allows you to open the fuel door failed, the reverse gear wouldn’t engage and finally the electric windshield mechanism failed. There are many other failures experienced by other owners, not to mention the second rate infotainment system and the radio reception that is dismal. This is an expensive motorcycle and all of these failures are due to cheap electronic devices. If Honda is going to provide the high tech systems they should simply work.

Interesting video. 50 years riding on everything from Honda PC50 to ST1100, Kawasaki, Indian and Harley Cruisers and umpteen sports bikes - Suzukis and Hondas, plus an R1250GS. Toured all over Europe and North Africa. Last three have been Harleys - Street Bob and two Street Glides. Loved them BUT the suspension is consistently awful. Spine jarring on moderate road bumps and my pillion complained consistently through France last summer, I was very aware of it too. Picking up a new Goldwing bagger tomorrow. Big differences will be suspension that works, reverse gear, more weather protection and no clutch. (The Harley clutch became hard work round Paris). I won't miss the horrific metallic CLANG and jolt on the wonderful Milwaukee 114 when you first drop into gear from cold start. FFS don't put aftermarket pipes on the EU5 and later - the warning lights will drive you mad. Yep the Harleys are cool as F*** but you pay for it - every accessory (£800 Harley heated grips fitted - Honda standard), every service. Honda comes with 3 years free everything in UK right now - services, Euro roadside assist and warranty. Both UK websites and apps are sh*t in my opinion - Harley bends over backwards to hide their prices, Honda's is a b*gger to navigate. (BMW app is brilliant, records your rides in detail if you want). I won't miss the wet seats on the Harleys - dealer told me that's standard as they're built for California. I couldn't see anywhere on their UK website where it says your bum will always have a big wet spot? Unnacceptable, as is the soft Harley paint. If the new Wing is half as good as my old ST1100 I'm going to be in piggy heaven. 5 years and 80,000 miles later she was as good as new, only needed one set new front wheel bearings - under warranty. Cruise all day on Autobahn at 90 to 130 smoking a fag and open face helmet. Way to go!

Good Summary - Similar story to me and am in the twilight of my life long motorcycling adventure and just bought a BMW K1600GT - although another Goldwing was tempting and yes, I feel that if Honda had simply added a 6 speed transmission and cruise control to the ST - who would need more? 👍😎

Well the new 2023 Wing DCT bagger has been and gone. Toured Benelux, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and back. Fabulous, but nearly got caught a couple of times with the sheer weight. Could feel an old hernia scar starting to nip so chopped in 6 months ago for Forza 750 DCT. Light, fun and 50 around town, to 60+ mpg longer runs. Now done 2500 miles, lots of smiles. Helmet and gloves fit under seat, nice touch.

Your analogies are spot on. The bike you want when you get there. Ridden Japanese 2 stroke dirt bikes to litre sports bikes, nothing had felt the same as a rider’s bike like my old Road King. It handles like crap, top speed of nothing, the slight tilt in a corner and I’m scrapping everything. It’s a workout just to park it but kids wave at me at the lights on the Harley. Random guys give me the thumb up on a 17 years old bike. Seems like everyone else agrees with this good old chap than the other rockets I’ve ridden. I stay beside a helicopter airbase, so loud exhaust isn’t considered obnoxious at all.

First of all let me say this there is no wrong answer and you gentlemen did a fine job with your evaluation. But now here is my perspective and I’m kind of a loaner type personality so the Harley Davidson clubs and all that never really meant much to me anyway. I had a 2019 CVO limited that I recently sold. I decided to look at the 2021 CVO limited that is coming out right now. When I seen that Harley Davidson has done away with a hydraulic clutch and that you only get one wireless headset now instead of two and that the price had went up. I was not excited at all about the 2021 CVO Limited. So I started researching and looking at the new Honda Gold wing and for what you get for the money plus the styling is something I find to be much more sportier than the past then I’m going to probably buy the Honda Gold wing. So my fifth Harley I guess was my last.

No argument the Harley is the better short to medium journey bike. The Honda is a very underrated bike in terms of its sporty handling with that engine and shaft drive. I've had horses, emus run out in front of me on country trips in Australia so a noisy but not too loud Harley has an inbuilt safety factor. The Heritage should come with twin disc brakes - it's a big, heavy bike that needs the extra braking power. If you like something smooth and fuss free, highly competent go for the Honda. If you prefer something more raw around the edges with loads of old world charm and character, go for the Harley, especially if you do a lot of around town riding. That big fairing on the Honda blocks lower half vision in traffic.

Trucker-D Everyone is entitled to an opinion in a democracy. I have ridden one of the early models without a fairing but I've owned a Suzuki GS1000 with a full fairing. Also spoken to Police riders with BMW'S with full fairing models. They always said the lower half of the fairing impeded their view in traffic. One person I knew in the 90s had a Goldwing he'd fitted a side-car to. I would only get a Goldwing for long distance riding, not around town.

You must be kidding… You know you have rain mode sport mode comfort mode none of that on the Harley… In sport mode that big monster handles wonderfully does not show its weight.I am quite sure that on the twisties someone who is experienced with the gold wing would be gone with the wind.

Enjoyed the review. Both lovely bikes. The manual 6speed GW replaces the missing DCT rider involvement. I’ve had DCT Honda’s and they are great but that is the trade off. I know there are up & down paddles but flicking a button is not the same or as rewarding as coordinating a well timed gear change.
