Please be noted that Higher capacity transformers has comparatively Low impedance but not the higher impedance and that's why it exhibit low voltage distortion against same harmonic current Bcoz V=ZI , so less the Z, less the V@same I . In the video you stated that higher capacity transformer has higher impedance which needs to be corrected otherwise nice lecture. Thank you.

Thanks for this superb presentation. As an electrical engineering undergrad, I had some doubts regarding harmonics and its effects. By the end of the video, I learned something.

Great video, but one thing I observed that most of the time the slide was not shown while you were pointing to the slides, making it missed out what you were trying to show. The camera was focused on you instead of the screen. Can you fix it please? or is it too late.

Correction @ 1:25 To be specific/accurate, actually harmonics *are* sinusoidal voltages and currents. Their *sum* is what results in a non-sinusoidal voltage or current.

Retired from a large hospital and never know they are held to a tighter voltage distortion. Had hundreds of drives from 3 to 1750 HP and our great start up tech said that we were the only place that had equipment on line side & load side of most drives dealing with harmonics and voltage distortion. About 5 years ago at an IAEI class they said Japan is experimenting with supplying DC panels to large buildings. This would eliminate the need for rectifier and cheaper power supplies to equipment and reducing air conditioning loads. Think they hope to save at least 5% over all between power & AC savings.

Two things: Do 18 pulse VFD'S produce or handle harmonics better then they standard 6 pulse drives? Read some where that some cheap cheating china LED'S have a low power factor as low as 0.5 . Do such low power factor LED''S produce more harmonics then one say above 0.9 PF?. Tech from two separate drive companies said to stay away from 18 pulse drives but we have a lot of them in a new 12 story building ( all drives 30 HP & higher have 18 pulse drives except for soft start on 200 HP fire pump ). Do the newer think they are called active line reactors with their contactors & capacitors much better then plain Jane line reactor? Thanks for nice vid.

How are you determining Voltage distortion by looking at the current waveform. In the begining you explain the calculation for ITHD then magically 30 seconds latter in the transformer comparison slides you come up with a voltage distortion value with no explanation of how you got it

Can harmonic distortion be generated from poorly designed generators? (alternators) Say for instance, from a poorly designed wind generator that had harmonic content?

@omidash267
@omidash267 6 лет назад
I was thinking 70 + 20 = 90, Today I learn 70 + 20 = 72, and it responded to all my THD Math I knew before :)
@ahmedosman9699
@ahmedosman9699 6 лет назад
actually you should 1. square both of them 2. add them 3. square root the result and you will ger 72.8 so called rms (root mean square ) try it :)
@XTRMJ
@XTRMJ 6 лет назад
I just looked at this video & I had the same concern. I think he meant to use only "2 amps" instead of 20, & thus 2/70 = 2.857%, otherwise 28.57% is way higher than their worst case THD. But considering he represents ABB, they should have fixed all of these discrepancies by now.
@mwsc
@mwsc 5 лет назад
You can see the formula for RMS at 4:35 I(total) = sqrt (Ifund^2 + Iharm^2) = sqrt (70^2 + 20^2) = 72.8A.

can a generator create harmonic distortion?
@nirbhaythacker6662
@nirbhaythacker6662 7 лет назад
It depends on the design of the generator, but generally generators do not produce any significant harmonics. You could read up a better explanation from "Electric Machines" by Ashfaq Husain.
