Dan really is a story telling genius. it's always amazing to me how he arranges even single sentence stories or metaphors on the fly

The people watching this who don't know why the crowd is yelling "9/11, 9/11!" must be quite confused.

The crack metaphor is exactly how I feel about modern series. I'm so tired of big heavy over arching stories. I like stories that basically return status quo with a light seasonal theme and some callbacks.

This is actually incredibly helpful advice, especially about finishing the first draft before going back through and changing things. That's a problem Im constantly facing when writing my scripts. Thank you for the clip!

This is the truest crap ever and I always fuck up at this because doing re-edits suck, but yeah, 100%, just get crap out and then go back later. You have infinity time to make stuff sound good after the fact, but if you do that while you're starting out then you'll just get nowhere and have to erase your shitty scenes anyway when they don't fit. Just blast through, do an alright draft, THEN go back and actually focus in on what you want to say. You'll be amazed at what you can figure out and come up with as you go on that just ends up reframing everything that came beforehand. Remember, if you can't get done then the story basically doesn't exist, it's just a shower thought, right? Get something done, form a framework for your story in the moment, THEN you can panic over the details and stuff and be a massive perfectionist about it. It's like making a sketch, right? You get the shapes out and form your pose, THEN you can go in and start doing all the shading and all this other stuff. If you start drawing something and you're coloring it and everything as you go you're just going to drive yourself insane.

This is extremely insightful why is it not viral? "Prove why you suck," can be applied to writing, painting any kind of first draft. I just wonder what if you are idiot like me that falls in love with Poopy Doo and wants to tell his story, do you ow it to the like.. the Gods of creativity to never use that draft, shove it in draw and write something better from the top after completing the exercise? Not really expecting an answer just saying words. I guess I am wondering is there superstitions about writing out there that people follow? It would be interesting to know what habits a variety of writers have, stupid rules that only make sense in the individual writers practice, stuff like that. Me when I write poetry for the first half of the poem I never write the first word that pops up in my head, I would rather use a simile or just something that fucking rhymes with that word before writing that first word idea down, because time and time again when I have done that I have proof overload that I suck with the first word I just can't be OK with my brains first offerings, I am like "go back in the kitchen and get something that you haven't forgotten you left out all night and is probably going to give me food poisoning. I need something that has a modicum of effort and freshness." Writing other things though I can totally see the 'prove that you suck' idea helping a lot, like with story's and prose. But like the man said it's good advice but it's hard to get past the ego to actually do it for real.

I like how you took the simplest most basic and arguably the least useful piece of advice out of the three.

@@cartoonhanks1708 I like how you're such an evolved being you couldn't just let me enjoy my excitement about this subject without criticism, and made assumptions about my comprehension based on one comment and felt the need to try and make fun of me for not being being as hip to this as you obviously are. Wow can I be you? You must be fun at parties.

I’ve really taken this advice to heart. I wrote a really good script too Walks runs into the bar. He gets kicked out of the bar cause he a young boy. He got a big nose. Random guy: "How does he do it?" Walks punches bladder and other guy pees. The random guy was the pee wizard. His ID says he is a man. Walks hates men. He stay boy forever. Ext. Cut to bathroom city The end

I have another script Guy with gun: “Buuuuut officerrrrrrr. He called me a bitch!” Officer: Well sticks and stones- Guy with gun: “And he was black” Officer: Ope, well that’s my mistake. Have a nice day. Guy with Gun: Hey, will I see you at the barbecue? Officer: No, my wife has… uh… cancer? Guy with Gun: I’m so sorry. I got my friend, Detravius Brownly, to do the cooking and everything. Officer: He sounds black. Nvm. I lied about my wife having cancer cause you white asses don’t use seasoning. Guy with Gun: Okay… See you Friday night! Officer: HAHA, No you won’t (Plot twist. The officer was also black) The End. Thank you for reading chapter one of my light novel titled, Checkers: A Red and Black story. Follow me for my other works such as: Chess: The Black King Shit stain on 1 ply toilet paper Black Cat Crushed by Ladder The White Stripe(of my cousins magical top hat) And Many More Many More is also one of the stories

That Star Trek bit felt like a humblebrag. I would have used Point Break as an example of an idea not being important. That movie is about surfers who moonlight as bank robbers. That's a stupid idea. But the movie is great. Star Trek is a good idea for a show. That example felt like Dan saying "uh yeah my show is soooo dumb like this other show that's critically acclaimed and culturally significant, yeah what does to boldly go where no man has gone before mean?" He's a good writer but he has a bit of an ego

Star Trek is a good example, though. Roddenberry pitched it as Wagon Train in space. It doesn'tt sound as the greatest idea ever (specially now that most people don't know what the show Wagon Train even is), but it was the skeleton for what eventually became Star Trek.
