We were there in December, very interesting place. Do you remember the TV show, Death Valley Days? It was about western life in Death Valley and the 20 mule team. Starring Ronald Reagan.
I lived in Pahrump, NV in 2015. @ 12:18 There were a LOT of European tourists all around Death Valley. The Europeans were always VERY polite, very healthy and very friendly. Many rode BMW bikes. My company had me stay at the Pahrump Nugget for about a month. A lot of the Europeans stayed at the Nugget. Like I said, nice folks. Always enjoy your videos, Russ!
Borax is an super cool element, it's great for enhancing laundry detergent. Also mix it with Polyvinyl Alcohol and it will make cool slime for kids to play with. The most interesting thing to me is its ability to increase free testosterone in your blood. Which is a big help for us old men, lol. Have a great day Russ!
Did you notice the bells at the top of the lead mule team's collar hames? The bells jangled as the lead team walked. During inclement weather the wagon driver could not see his lead team, but he knew where they were because of the sound of the bells.
I agree with you, Russ! Furnace Creek is way better than Stovepipe Wells. As for the full hook-up sites in Furnace Creek, it was just $22 a night if you have the live-time National Park senior pass. That was when we stayed there in December 2020.
borax was used to melt gold concentrates. So you take the ore and stuff, mix it with borax, and pull off the molten gold. It's called "a flux". Today - they use cyanide to refine gold in most places in a wash in order to remove the impurities without heavy heating. How do i know? I helped create teaching materials for management systems for the use of cyanide in gold and silver mining. Yes, i'm weird.
@@WanderlustEstate borax will stop ants and roaches from entering a space. it's good washing soap material. I'm unsure on the T level, (and im a biologist) - so i need to do some digging
@@silkrose32 cyanide is bad stuff. but i have some experience in it from a scientific standpoint. Yes, i had organic chemistry, and yes, i have spent a lot of time in labs (working and managing) - but this stuff was a bit "scary".
Sweet weather! Love this post! Stayed at Stovepipe Wells a few weeks ago. It’s a parking lot, but there is quick access to Mosaic Canyon (beautiful hike) and on the road to Scotty’s Castle there is a short turnoff that takes you to the historic stovepipe well, just northeast of the dunes. Fewer people = better chance at dune photos with no footprints or other people. The well would get covered with blowing sand, making it hard to find, so someone jammed a stovepipe on it to make it easier to spot from a distance. Easy to imagine how important that was back in the day, as the next nearest water supply was very, very far away. Bucket list photo!
🙋♀️ Hello Russ! The Borax Mining - so far from civilization, I wander what there shopping trips were like? People had to eat, feed animals, etc. A lot left to the imagination. Death Valley is so far away from everything. It's nice to visit. Probably some really nice people there, I wouldn't want to stay. Have a nice day Russ! 👍
Really nice drive. Enjoyed the history of the borax plant. Watched Death Valley Days on tv yrs ago when tv shows were better, or maybe just the times were. Like the maps inserted in. Thanks for the ride a long. 😊👍

Remember that back entrance to the LTVA near the LDS church in Quartzite? Well they’ve blocked it off to vehicle traffic with a shiny new steel gate. Left room for walking or biking through though. Wonder if they saw your video? 🤔😀
I grew up watching Death Valley days. I think the borax wagon trains are at the start of each episode. My grandmother's great uncle is the namesake of Beatty. Married to a Paute woman with three kids. She was from the area in the video. My relitiive was one of the first three white men in the area. His pic is my profile.
HI Russ,If you have time check out Engels Coach Shop.He is a wagon maker that built a set of these borax wagons. The back wheels on the wagons weighed over a thousand pounds a piece.
@ 1:43 That's a picture of their Brand. Twenty Mule Team Borax. They would advertise in TV in the 50's. My mom ordered me the Twenty Mule Team model. It was cool. It had 20 mules, two rows of 10, plus two wagons and a water wagon. I was probably eight years old in Dallas. Good times!
I drove through Death Valley about 20 years ago. Near Furnace Creek we ran into a huge sand storm. The sand pitted the paint and windshield of my brand new car. Luckily our insurance paid for a new paint job and windshield. Pretty crazy.
That is a nice highway and I think it gone now. You can't enter DV from NV anymore since the flash flooding in August. You are so lucky you got your trip in when you did. I was heading there and now I can't go...
Thanks Russ for your excellent travel videos! Death Valley is my most favorite area, and curious if they have Scotty’s castle close to being completed from that flood a few years ago? Hope 1 time I’m able to meet you sometime. Happy and safe travels!
Very cool stop 😊! I can't imagine what it would be like in Stove Pipe Wells during the summer. I guess it would be a welcoming sight for any hot travelers 🏜️! I am enjoying traveling through Death Valley in "The Beast"!🚐
The tanker in the wagon train I was told was for the mules during their journey out of Death Valley to the railhead where they would unload the Zinc Borate (I have family that worked for US Borax for 40 years)...
You bring back memories for me. My army unit went on maneuvers in death valley in 1976. Nearest town (that I remember) was Barstow. Keep doing your thing brother, always look forward to your next video.
Many auto manufacturers use Death Valley to test their cars in unbearable conditions. They would wrap the cars in a black and white theme, kind of like a QR Code meaning, the way the wrap was designed, it would be hard to figure out what Brand they were. Sunsets are incredible out there. The sky, lights up in reds and oranges. You gotta just stop and look at them... Thanks again, Russ!
Hi Russ. The maps are a welcome addition. I've seen many of your vids and thought 'Hey, -I- could go there! Where the h*ll IS that?' You sure get beautiful weather in the desert in winter!
Nice video. Or series of videos i should say. I thought the price of gas in the park was pretty reasonable considering the price in Shoshone was about 75 cents higher!
...Wonder where the wood came from to fire up the boilers ? ......Any coal around ? ....Maybe those are the only wagons left 'cause the others became fuel ?....Great video, as always, at 12:40 I was impressed by how far up you flew the drone, then I realized it was a shot from a satellite !......(Not many folks have a satellite, you must be making a killing, hahaha).......Thanks
👍👍 Untill us humans came up with chemical bleach, Borax was big business. In Death Valley, they also had steam locomotive trucks to pull those trailers full of borax.
I used to work out there my home borate out of American borate industrial mining Ventures nice and deliver Freight to all the cat houses and we had all the freight rights to haul to the Nevada test site I got to see a lot of cool stuff
The blm land around tecopa is unlimited camping. Check with hot springs staff. Area called dodge city about 10 miles from tecopa is large flat areas. Name is due to big rvs used to congregate there. You have trash dump; water; senior meals and 10 dvds at a time at library. Don't have to be a resident. No cell phone signals and pay phone is there. Groc in pahrump 30 miles away.
Russ, you may want to do a fact check. Scotty's Castle was closed a few years ago because of some extensive flash flood damage. I think covid may have kept them from reopening last year.
The reason why Scottish castles closed flooded about 5 years ago maybe more the state of California is too lazy to fix it since they operated looks like that pull their head out of their butt and do something so the people could see how beautiful it is oh well covid Will Go On
