This was a news piece on WBBM-TV, the local CBS outlet, done by Phil Ponce about Chicago mayor Harold Washington. At that time Jane Byrne was trying to make a comeback and recapture the office of mayor. In a hard-fought 1983 election battle she had the position taken away from her by Harold who became Chicago's first black mayor.
Washington was the nominee in the February 24, 1987 Democratic primary and then went on to victory in the general election on April 7, 1987. He died at his desk at City Hall on November 27, 1987. Jane Byrne is still alive and living in Chicago.
